good friday morning. thanks for being here i'm eric thomas. and i'm katie marzullo in for kristen sze. steady rain has been falling all night punctuated by wind, lightning and thunder. >> we have live team coverage tracking the storm. we begin meteorologist lisa argen and a look at where rain is now. hi everyone. we are looking at back edge of the rain shifting out of alameda and berkeley now. lighter around orinda light to moderate pleasant hill, walnut creek through the san ramon valley 580 dublin san leandro had thunderstorms around fremont early per in the south bay now rain continuing to

shift east. still light rain here look at the break as we head up the peninsula mountain view, redwood city, north baycol of the low has to move through this afternoon, once again we could see thunderstorms definitely a chillier start and chillier afternoon. here's a live shot in san jose of northbound 101 underneath 880. this is what you can expect as you need work, visibility limited in some locations although the rain isn't quite as bad in some spots, because traffic is light, we are just seeing so many accidents. there's still quite a about of flooding. northbound 85 to north 280, flooding reported there as well as five to six cars with problems. all the other circles accidents flooding reported northbound 680 as well at jacqueline. flooding into the usual spots problem highway 1 devils slide and pacifica mudslide blocking the northbound lane. right now mechanics at sfo

are going over a united jumbo jet, inch by inch after it was hit inflight by lightning. terry mcsweeney is live at sf -- live at sfo. >> reporter: they are going to try to get to london again this afternoon. the attempt last night didn't happen. united flight 930 last night hundreds onboard, 45 minutes out of san francisco, i it gets hit by lightning. we have video of that lightning storm that came to the bay area last night. people onboard are saying lightning slammed into the left side of the plane. there was a huge flash inside that jet. you can imagine what some people were thinking. oxygen masks dropped down. passenger michael o'neil described the scene after he had a few moments to calm down. here's what he said. >> i felt like everything was under control and in good hands. the plane felt like it was

flying okay. we are flying back into a lightning storm because we are flying back to where we took off, where the lightning was so i was a little like maybe we should just keep flying to london. >> reporter: that's not with the way they operate. the pilot dumped fuel, came back to sfo, everybody safe. you are looking at video from san leandro last night. paiges will try again this afternoon and make it out of town -- passengers will try again in afternoon and make it out safely. another effort to get to london at 3:00 this afternoon. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. we have an amazing picture sent to us through a ureport from last night's thunderstorm. ed of san francisco says he was just testing his camera when he captured this picture of lightning striking all four towers of the bay bridge's western span. from ponding on the roads

to flooding in homes, trees into powerlines the storm has left a mess around the bay. we are not done yet. sergio quintana continues our team coverage from the bay bridge where drivers are facing a slick and slow commute. >> reporter: the good news is that for now, it seems the rain has subsided so have the winds. overnight, the rains were intense enough to bring down a tree in the oakland hills. that happened around 8:00 last night on glen court drive near arrowhead drive. the tree came down taking down powers line with it parts of the tree came to rest on a parked car no injuries were reported pg&e crews moved in quickly. throughout the rest of the bay, rains have made for a soggy and sometimes slick early morning commute you've been hearing traffic reports throughout the morning. even though it has subsided for now, where i am, of course

cop-killing suspect is still considering out standing not presumed dead despite the fact the apartment they thought he was in burned up overnight. that fire is now out. deputies say he shot and kid a sheriff's deputy and civilian who had come to evict him. police say the late night fire was probablye caused by devices the s.w.a.t. team fired into the apartment to get the suspect out many they don't know what happened to the suspect. what we need to do is determine who the suspect is. pick apart his life, try to determine a motive. what happened that led up to this shooting. then from there, we need to honor and bury our deputy. 53-year-old modesto deputy robert paris, 16 year veteran of the department was kill.

investigators have not released the name of the civilian who was killed. authorities are waiting to determine if the burned out building is safe enough to enter and search. developing news in contra costa county, residents in parts of the county were warned to beware of the air overnight i have an fire at conoco phillips refinery in rodeo. health services received reports of the fire after 1 a.m.. residents were warned and a haz-mat crew was sent to monitor the air. they've determined the fire posed no health impact to the community. the fire burned 90 minutes before being put out by refinery employee. muni has a plan to reduce driver overtime customers may not be impressed because the plan means some bus runs will be delayed or cancelled. the controller's office says muni is on track to spend 60 billion dollars -- 60 million dollars on overtime this year, double the 32 million dollars the agency budgeted. as a result, mooney has

stopped paying overtime to replace drivers who call in sick, instead their buses will stay parked in the yard this practice does not affect train service. it is 6:09. lisa argen is in with the forecast. a mover and shaker. >> tell us more lisa argen. we shook last night, it is moving this morning. a little bit more of that this afternoon, the back edge of the rain pushing through the east bay now. it is lightning up there will be a break out there, right now from pittsburg to vine hill, livermore, pleasanton, walnut creek you still have rain as well as dublin further south into san jose, east of the hills, rain/snow mix mount hamilton, cold air is in place some of the higher elevations highway 17, be careful we've got the possibility of a little wet snow and look what is offshore, break up in the north counties, we are still looking at that area of low pressure that is going to

rotate throughout the afternoon today that means more scattered showers, cool temperatures today, a chance of a thunderstorm and at the ballgame, the winds are going to pick up. we'll see northwesterly winds increase from 10 to 20 miles an hour, starting out in the low 50s to mid 50s. there will be sunny breaks. is like deja vu we are doing it all over again. by the evening tonight things calming down and we have a nice weekend in store. traffic is light right now at the tolls. look out for windy conditions across some of the bridges still slippery and wet that's why we are seeing a lot of accidents this morning. no delays at the bay bridge toll. check out these areas where we've had accidents, north 680 jacqueline flooding reported as well as highway 85 and 280 has caused problems in the area. better news now, highway 1 in pacifica they cleared the mudslide at devils slide. there's still flooding along

good morning. just about 6:15. live look from our sutro cam toward san francisco we are on the trailing edge of the rain system lisa argen says it will be moving out but what about the weekend? hey w what about that giants' game this afternoon? she will have the forecast for all those things coming up. right now police are searching for the vandals who have been slashing tires if pleasanton. the investigation started when vandals hit 30 cars a few weeks ago. new reports began coming in tuesday morning from residents in the harley gate court neighborhood. wednesday the number of than a dozen. >> when you have it and you only know it is awe you -- only know it is you, you think somebody is out to get me. when i heard it was other neighbors, i said okay this is somebody having fun slashing

lightning up from vine hill to concord, we still have rain towards clayton, walnut creek light showers alamo, moraga better look outside now looks brighter are, dublin towards 580 in the livermore valley, east san jose hills higher elevations rain/snow mix spotty light showers mountain view, san jose and gilroy. as you look at the wider picture around bodega bay more showers offshore. the bulk of the widespread rain pushing east and this well to the north and west you can even see it, area of low pressure that will continue to generate showers like yesterday. i don't think we'll see the strong line like we saw yesterday. half inch in napa, oakland 1.77, 1.11 in san francisco, redwood city an inch and a half in san jose in the last

24 hours over 3/4 of an inch of rain. besides it coming down so hard and quickly, of course beneficial rain. we are adding to the deficit probably bringing us up to near 60% of average, some spots may be 70%. 47 right new in redwood city, 45 san rafael, colder start this last system bringing in that chillier air mass the winds have lightened up as rain continues to push to the east of us. the morning rain turning to showers, possibility of an afternoon thunderstorm, sunny and mild tomorrow and into early next week. here's a look at our satellite and radar composite off the california/oregon coast the low continues to spin and it will continue to advance to the south and east going over the bay later this afternoon that will generate showers, thunderstorm activity. i think the bulk of the severe weather to the south and east of us, where we still have an afternoon of hit or miss showers.

here we are 5:00 this morning through the 7:00, 8:00 hour the chance of rain by midday most of the cold air in place and the afternoon sun will allow for the pop-up showers throughout the day. by the evening hours, things really quieting down and skies will become partly cloudy. we'll see a little fog out there winter storm warning effect into tonight in the sierra nevada not good idea if you have to go east or south where we have the really rough weather throughout the afternoon cool, breezy, scattered showers at the ballpark in the low 50s to mid 50s. northwesterly winds will keep it cool this afternoon it will be kind of dicey from time to time breaks for sure and by the afternoon, instead of the intensification that we saw yesterday, we should see things settle down, still, it could be pop-up showers throughout the day today and the look ahead, it going to be a nice weekend. you were talking the

i'm katie marzullo in for kristen sze. we begin with rain, wind, lightning and thunder kept some up all night. >> terry mcsweeney is at sfo where the storm created a storm in the air. meteorologist lisa argen begins with where the storm is now. it is continuing to slide east out of the bay area for now. here's a look at live doppler, pittsburg, highway 4, wet weather, and the solid rain that you had this morning the past three hours continues to rotate into the central valley. calaveras road south bay sierra road or south of the hills, livermore valley milpitas if you like showers. we are looking at a break now. yesterday oakland picked up in the last six hours' inch of rain. redwood city 8/10. more showers offshore, petaluma, marshal road and highway 1 look at wet weather that line of showers has moved in. we still have the area of low

their original flight was forced to make an emergency landing after it was hit by lightning. terry mcsweeney is live at sfo with the latest on the scare in the air. >> reporter: it is especially scary for those of us who are not great fliers. last night united flight 930 bond for london, all of a sudden it -- bound for lone i, all of a sudden struck by lightning. passengers are saying it was a huge brilliance inside that cabin. take a look at storm we have pictures of that electrical storm that rolled through town. the united jet had lightning slam into the left side of it. a huge flash, oxygen masks dropped down. passenger michael o'neil described the scene. >> you could feel the lightning hit the plane. just a giant flash. everyone watching movies and stuff it was overpowering how bright the flash was. i looked around and i just sort of continued about my

business. but i was definitely shaken and everyone sort of looked like what was that? >> reporter: the pilot kept it together, dumped fuel over the ocean, flew back to sfo for that emergency landing and everybody is safe. they are going to try again this afternoon at 3:00. i was looking scientific american website about lightning strikes on jets. it says, that every on average, every commercial jet in the world gets struck by lightning more than once per year. but those jets are so well designed it can handle it. obviously it handled it last night. now i'm hearing we are going to have possibly thunderstorms when they are taking off again this afternoon. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. in san francisco, crews are still cleaning up raw sewage that overflowed yesterday morning. several homes, restaurants and businesses on folsom street

were damaged. residents say the same flooding happened in 2009 and 2007. public utilities officials admit they made only minor repairs and need a permanent fix. >> stay with abc7 for continuing storm coverage. check abc7news.com for street level radar with live doppler 7 hd. new developments in our breaking news at the scene of a nearly 20 hour police standoff with a suspected cop killer in modesto. a late night fire is now out burning in the apartment where the suspect was holed up following shooting deaths of a sheriff's deputy and civilian who had come to evict him. police say the fire was probably caused by tear gas s.w.a.t. teams use. authorities are waiting to see when the build something safe enough to enter and confirm if the suspect is there or not. investigators stated earlier he was pruplsed dead. within the past hour they --

presumed dead. within the past hour they said he was still out standing. in massachusetts state police shutdown several streets as they chase a suspect awe accused of shooting and wounding a state trooper. we have live pictures. the town's mayor told reporters the suspect holed up inside an apartment building at one point he had taken an 8-year-old boy hostage. that child has since been leased, unharmed. another -- another twist in the controversy surrounding state treasurer bill lockyer and his wife nadia lockyer. this morning she is denying she sent an e-mail claiming she was in distress and her husband got her hooked on drugs. the e-mail was sent to a reporter at the mercury news from her e-mail address. when the paper and police followed up nadia told everyone she was fine and blamed a hacker or former boyfriend for sending the e-mail. the former boyfriend is under investigation in connection with the possible assault on

the supervisor but he has never been charged. dive teams will be back in the water today searching two south bay reservoirs for missing morgan hill teenager sierra lamar. both are located close to the 15-year-old's home. divers are searching for any evidence connected to the disappearance of the teenager. sierra's parents reported her missing a month ago today after she didn't show up for school. another volunteer search is set for tomorrow and sunday. 6:37 now. i'll tell you what, between lightning strikes and raw sewage spilling i'd say folks have had enough of this storm. >> yeah, i smell a change in the air. let's check in with lisa argen. a good change, right? live doppler, the hills east of san jose and east of milpitas, pretty good downpours. the roadways are beginning to clear, i should say the rain on the roadways i'm the roadways still have trouble out there this band of moderate rain has quickly

swept through the area and we are looking at lighter rain around concord and brentwood to the north more showers will be generated from fort ross to bodega bay, inverness, rosen park 101 light rain san francisco peninsula loop of the last three hours -- light to moderate rain, thunderstorms and lightning continues to lift north and east we saw that in milpitas, fremont over an inch of rain in the past six hours on the peninsula. we still have the core of the low that is going to push through, once it does that primes the atmosphere once again for showers and thunderstorms. these totals over the past 24 hours looks like we'll see much less when we do see any of these downpours could possibly bring us another 10th of an inch of rain. this morning chilly start. we are looking at still this afternoon with sunny breaks, cloud-sun mix with rain around and breezy winds when we do see a thunderstorm.

frances, how is it looking? >> it is looking pretty busy. at last you are saying with the rain starting to -- at least you are saying with the rain starting to dissipate a little from the peninsula, it is getting better. bay bridge toll, it is friday light. just look out for the wind advisory still posted for the bay bridge and possibly golden gate bridge and richmond san rafael bridge. san mateo bridge traffic westbound past the toll. quite a few accidents, especially in the south bay. i want to focus on a couple spots where you want to be careful. one is in cupertino on 85 and 280, flooding has been reported near the connection ramp and quite a few accidents in the area if you are headed towards sfo, flooding has been reported on 380 to 101 and 101 to 380, a few accidents on 280 and on 101. the other connection ramp you need to look out for flooding on 880 to 238. you want to be careful and

lake tahoe. 48 inches of snow there with the snow diminishing by 5:00. the southern sierra looking at another foot to foot and a half of snow. more heavy rain in southern california. we are not out of the woods yet. i'll have the forecast coming up. this morning there is growing international concern about what north korea will do now after a long range missile launch turned out to be a bust yesterday. the pyongyang government confirmed the rocket blew up less than two minutes after launch. north korea said it was testing technology to send a weather satellite into space. the u.s. and allies called it a pretext for testing a rocket capable of carrying a nuclear warhead. i wouldn't want to be the head of north korea's space agency right now. i do believe it was a cover this launch for ballistic missile technology, long range military purposes. but, it is a failure. >> washington says even though the test failed, it will still

suspend the food aid it had planned to send to north korea as an incentive for cancelling the launch. >> mortgage business is boosting profits for wells fargo. >> bloomberg business reporter jane king joins us live from the new york stock exchange to explain. good morning. a lot of it is refinancing. wells fargo reporting a record profit the bank making more on new mortgages and seeing decreasing losses on the old problem ones. analysts says the bank's mortgage business got a boost from the government programs, encouraging refinancing. shares of wells fargo this morning down a little which is interesting. stocks over all are lower. we didn't see a government report on consumer prices. it showed an uptick in the core rate of inflation that takes out food and energy we were paying more for those last month. slower than expected growth in china.

bloomberg index down also. with summer fast approach being some of you may be planning your trip. -- half of american workers didn't use all their vacation days last year giving up half vacation time on average. usa today says a survey shows it is because many have heavy workloads and they don't want to play catch-up after taking time off. live at the new york stock exchange, i'm jane king. 6:47. we have a warning about mosquitoes and the potentially deadly west nile virus. authorities confirmed the virus in a dead bird in pleasant hill. officials say the find is unseasonably early. last year the first bird wasn't discovered until late june. the public should be extra diligent about venting the spread of the virus by getting rid of standing water. the sierra is getting another layer of new snow. here's what it looks like near

blue canyon if you are headed to the slopes today bring the chains or snow tires, they are required right now on i-80 and highway 50. live pictures, you see one vehicle going through now on 80 at kingvale. take the chains, be careful. >> definitely. it was spring in the winter now in the spring it is winter. >> exactly. it has been a wild couple of days. right now a little break out there, take a look from our roof camera. we are looking at the clouds beginning to part here downtown, live doppler shows the rain moving out of the south bay, still spotty shower in the east bay, the hills, higher elevations, you are looking at snow, a little rain/ snow mix, pittsburg light showers things have shut off considerably over the past couple of hours in the north bay, petaluma, marshal road towards 101 novato, you could be seeing light showers. out here we are still looking

at rain that will be moving in. the possibility of a thunderstorm because more energy is going to be pushing through the bay area with sunshine, we could get lift and that means thunderstorms. this is a loop of the past three hours. it may have -- if this didn't wake you last night that heavy line of storms brought over an inch in six hours to oakland. these are 24 hour totals with san francisco over an inch and over an inch and 3/4 in san francisco, looking at an inch and a half redwood city, san jose, over 3/4 of an inch, that's the 24 hour totals. could see more downpours later this afternoon, much cooler this morning, the cool air mass in place things have quieted down we are looking for the core of the low to push over the bay today that's why we could see a thunderstorm. yesterday peninsula, east bay, wow, you got slammed with the heavy rain. there's the low we still have a trough that wants to rotate through. behind it that's when things

change and we'll get back to spring. throughout the next three hours or so, we'll still see rain around parts of the north bay and the east bay through 11:00. then we've got be the possibility of more thunderstorms. the difference between today and yesterday, well it is more vigorous weather maker last night leaving the cold air in place. 8:00 tonight, when the winter storm warning will be lifted for the sierra nevada. wet snow around lake level and this afternoon, scattered showers, maybe a thunderstorm, winds kicking up at times with 526 to 56 the afternoon highs. partly -- cloudy, spotty showers, maybe a thunderstorm, cooler afternoon and the look ahead of fog to start tomorrow and then sunny and mild through early next week, maybe a little more shower activity north bay wednesday. frances, any good news? the good news is that we are seeing fewer accidents right now than we did earlier this morning where so many kept popping up every other

true life story." authorities in modesto waiting to see whether it is safe to enter a burned out apartment complex where a suspected cop killer was holed up. they need to confirm if his body is inside. the fire that leveled the apartment started last night after authorities fired tear gas into the building in hopes of ending an all-day standoff with the suspect. the overnight storm brought wind, rain and all the problems that go with it, including a midair scare that forced an emergency landing at sfo. >> terry mcsweeney is live at sfo with the latest on this. >> reporter: hundreds of passengers are going to try again this afternoon to fly out of san francisco to london. they tried last night, their jet was hit by a bolt of lightning. take a look at the storm that brought the lightning to sfo. there were about -- they were 30, 45 minutes out of sfo we the lightning slammed into the jet. it was united flight 930.
