down pours into that area of rainfall. for the most part as you can see there is again, most active weather, stormiest weather has been to our east into the central valley. we'll have more pockets of showers developing and into evening. there may be isolated thunderstorms, i'll give you a look at the forecast later. dan? >> thank you. we'll see you shortly. the storms left behind a mess, public works crews across the bay area are dealing with mudslides and downed trees. and santa cruz mountains there is a massive oak that fell about a mile and a half off highway 17. the tree snagged cable and phone lines and no power lines. there is a one laimpblg, as you can see. chp officers say a driver went into a ditch because of this muddy mess. no one was hurt n south san francisco, crews are finally clearing a lot of standing water from a key ramp. chp shut down the 101

connector ramp several hours, caltrans use cruised use aid truck to suck out a foot of standing water. in berkeley, crews kugt up a tree uprooted by wind and rain. looks like this narrowly missed several homes. there was a big tree, as you can see. >> everybody is talking about the lightning, photographers sent us great pictures like this. this one tells us he managed to capture lightning striking the bay bridge. there 7. >> strikes last night, and into early morning and take a look at this picture now from phil mcgrew. he says he wanted to get a shot ever since moving to san francisco. this is only the third time he's had the chance. he says he took this with a single 20-second exposure, take a look at this picture

from david jones. david jones tells us he used a 20-second exposure. and abc 7 news reporter talks to jones today, what did he say? >> well, cheryl, first he told me that he, in fact took 300 pictures. now, you know people in the mid west are used to this. these types of storms. for us there is a lit of -- bit of a novelty. >> other one went around by. >> you can't shoot bad pictures with this view. david jones kept the shutter open touring last night's storms. >> first time i actually went on to twitter just to verify there was thunder. >> a lot of people tweeted about lightning. wow, catching mother nature.

the national weather service recorded at least 750 lightning strikes. rainfall records were also shattered in several bay area cities. this morning people in san mateo county, san francisco and east bay who experienced this were talking about the night they'll always remember. >> this is nerve rattling and i was washing dishes. i had a conversation like dear god. please don't kill me now. >> last night was the first time i was jarred by lightning. >> yes. omg. that was a crazy storm. >> she said of it. o, m, g. cheryl you said the picture everyone is talking about and i'm going to say it again, is one where you can see eight bolts of lightning hitting or falling very close to, the bay bridge. i just want to say that that picture has appeared in just about every news web site in

the world. here is a bit of a star. i'm live in san francisco, abc 7 news. >> it's understandable. it's credible picture, thank you. if you have pictures or video of damage we invite to you e mail us. or upload your media pictures. >> as spectacular as images of the storms are, and they are, there is a stark reminder of how daempk russ severe weather can be. a 6-year-old girl was killed playing in high surf on a beach. and abc 7's david louie is live with the story. david? >> well, dan, you can see behind me, waves are kicking up lots of foam. the foam can on cure debris. one family suffered a tragedy here as a result of their 6-year-old daughter hitting a log. the surf today has enveloped the beach where the family was playing in the water off 26th avenue. investigators believe the

6-year-old girl was knocked down by a wave, as she fell she hit a large log on the sachbld the surf pulled her out to sea, trapping her under the log. >> there is a lot of rain. rivers overflow. you get debris, logs and trees and sticks. and at that time these things will start floating up on to different beaches. that is what we're seeing yesterday. >> family members couldn't lift the log off the girl. the girl later died at the hospital. >> the log was pretty heavy. about a thousand pounds. you know? water soaked. so we're not sure now what happened to her and we're going have to do research into that. >> surfers say visitors don't always know about the danger autos normally there is just kelp. yesterday, unfortunately there was something bigger. it's important to be careful. if you can, swim near

lifeguards. >> the santa cruz county sheriff is not releasing the family's name. the parents and the sibling were with the girl when the accident happened. >> thank you. >> we have developing news from oklahoma. a large part of the state under a tornado watch. national weather service confirmed the tornado has touched down near university of oklahoma. there no immediate reports and we're getting word of damage to homes and businesses. there is a tornado part a powerful storm system expected to rumble throughout the region in 48 hours. >> one person has been nurt a fire in the fruit veil district. the fire broke out in an industrial area on east 9th street. the fire involved two buildings. flames sent a lot of smoke into the air as you can see

and officials say one person was injured. well now this developing news. modesto police just confirmed that they have found a body inside of a gutted home of a man who held them at bay more than 12 hours. the double murder and all-day standoff ended in dramatic fashion last night. laura? >> well, police have to wait for the gutted house behind me to cool before they can get inside. and they did find a body. police will not identify them but records say the suspect is in his mid-40s. james ferrario. the victims, we learned today a 35-year-old lock smith was a man killed when this started. a standoff began with a county

deputy and a lock smith being shot to death ended late thursday night. the fire started after s.w.a.t. teams, using several robots fired a series of flash grenades at the town house. >> we're deploying several devices inside. during that time there are lights turning on and off. we're confident we had gotten everybody outside that was innocent civilians. that makes us believe he wasn't inside. >> this couple had been evacuated from the apartment. >> there is a tj, just flames. we're having the -- do we come back? what do we do? you know? is our house on fire? >> police combed the streets for evidence. and began to investigate the ruins of the home. the suspect's black suv is in front of the street. >> this is very quiet man. kept to himself.

responded to the news. emily chang has that story for us. hi, emily. >> hello, dan. the market isn't happy about the new class of shares. google shares plunged today after larry page proposed this controversial stock split giving him and his co-founder more power as the company grows. that means diluting voting rights. the stock dropped to 4%, biggest in months. and shares pretty lackluster so far this year. and advisors spoke out against the proposed split saying it quote strongly opposes structures like this. it creates a new class of non-voting shares. the board approved it but they'll have to vote at an upcoming meeting. google's keef legal officer

says the company expects it to pass. broader market took a nosedive today as well, wiping out a huge rally. consumer confidence dropped. china's growth slowed and there were more problems in europe. every member in that index with google leading the plunge. apple fired back today at antitrust charges filed about by department of justice this week. the tech giant denying claims it conspired to drive up prices of e books saying it's not true and says the i bookstore has been beneficial for customers. and buying stree continues at facebook. there is a team of developers behind customer loyalty ap pchl.

feet of fresh snow to the sierra. right? >> there is around 3500 feet. you can see it's not snowing in this location and there is light snow falling. there is another live view looking sort of southeastward towards mount diablo. there is a great deal of sunshine today and not a lot happening in the bay of precipitation right now. let me show you where we do have precipitation. there are scattered areas of light to moderate rain. one area here between jant rosa moving from sonoma county to northern napa county. there is near napa, town of napa there is light to

moderate rainfall. there is heavy down pours and farther south there is light to moderate rain. most of the bay area is dry. temperatures are pretty much uniformed and into mid-50s, winds gusting in spots. gusts 26 miles per hour in hayward. and there is 33 miles per hour gusts in napa. so winds are still brisk. and these are the highlights. there are more showers this afternoon and evening. possibly small hail tonight. there is a slight possibility of thunderstorms and nothing like what we've seen last night. will be a sunny warmer weekend. there is still some spotty, active weather going on here that could bring us scattered showers tonight. tomorrow, expecting high pressure to build in and give us a dry, milder weekend.

joining our forecast we'll see some light rainfall and showers and into santa cruz mountains. it's shifting south ward and will be tapering offor night. there are spots of showers into the south bay. after that, most of the bay clearing and warming up. into the sierra we have a winter storm warning in effect. additional foot or more of snow. back into the bay area cooler than last night. lows dropping into upper 30s into north bay valleys. low to mid 40s and warming up tomorrow under sunny skies to low to mid-60s. here is the accu-weather forecast.

throughout the bay area last night and this morning. >> and we're tracking where the rain is falling right now. >>. >> let me give you an abbreviated explanation. and you get precipitation in the atmosphere, we had cold air moving in to edge that cold air mass. and along the leading edge there is instability and thunderstorm after thunderstorm after lightning strike after lightning strike. that is what happened. and so right now, live doppler 7 hd, thunderstorms again today into the central valley. here in the bay area, pockets of shower activity. some light, some heavy. there is a pocket pushing eastward right now. into the south bay, south of

gilroy another area of generally light to moderate rain over there. and there is movement of scattered showers. we may have an isolated storm or two this evening. there is the full forecast later. >> with that rain in a short period it sent some hill sides sliding. sky 7 shows thus video that is a primary thorough fare. abc 7 news reporter jones us now. nick? >> spencer talks about possibility of more rain but residents are hoping for a break. this stretch from highway 13 over to highland avenue. there is a major thoroughfare.

>> we heard crack eling an and -- crackeling and popping. >> he heard this. trees coming down, falling victim to a mudslide, landing on power lines. >> there is tension on the fires got strong enough you can hear a vibration. >> heavy rains uprooted long-standing trees and turned soil into a mushy mess leaving this mother without power and her son without a bottle. >> no power just worrying about milk now. >> crews have been working to restore power. >> now, in this area there is about 55 customers affected. >> and traffic has been impacted. drivers being told to find another way across town creating a stream of frustrated commuters. >> these trees haven't been maintained over the years.

>> mudslide isn't the only thing forcing residents to give this area a sloser look. the field is only yards away. and friends of moraga canyon argue current plans for the field would create a traffic nightmare and worse. >> it would be like having hoover dam in the backyard. >> but this engineer says unsupported soil is the reason for the mudslide. and the controversy around possible new sports complex is unjustified. >> if you do any construction work which is properly designed that cannot be a mudslide or anything like that. >> crews have been out here cleaning up since 7:00 in the morning but clearing the road isn't as simple as it might sound. engineers have to determine if

it can cause more damage to the home where the slide occurred. >> last night lightning strikes cut power to the national accelerateor laboratory. month were told to just stay home. officials say it hit the pg&e line line that vie splis power to that facility. it's involved in exploring properties of energy, space and time. >> oakland police captured a suspect after a three and a half hour search that shut down several streets and amtrak train line this, guy tried and failed to sneak away in a woman's dress and it ended with an arrest. >> started about 10:30 this morning. police patrolling and saw what they recognized is a stolen car. they recognized the man hitting in the car as a suspect who is wanted in a

kidnapping and assault. the officers pulled over. the suspect got out and ran inside of the hotel. that started the search. >> we're treating this as a barricaded suspect. our person who ran from the car is known to be armed with an assault weapon. it's unclear this officers saw the suspect with the weapon. >> nearly four hours, police and s.w.a.t. officers went room to room searching for who who had run into the hotel. officers called out to the buildings across the street. the embarcadero shut down in either side of jack london square and the amtrak lines were shut down. and amtrak officer told me passengers had to be bused out

of oakland. then, three and a half hours after it started police walked out with a suspect in custody. >> police department was looking for an individual who is responsible for kidnapping and an assault. that individual was taken into custody today a little bit after 2:00 p.m. by the police department. and oakland police department s.w.a.t. team. the suspect did change clothes and into womens' clothing and did try to disguise his appearance by changing into womens' clothing. >> back out to you. the suspect's female companion was taken into custody and turned over to police but we don't know if she was a snekt this kidnapping and assault in alameda. a spokeswoman said this is a police case and so far, the alameda police have not responded to our requests for information coming up at 6:00 we'll be talking with
