this surf today has enveloped the beach where the family was playing in the water off 26th avenue. investigators believe the 6-year-old girl was knocked down by a wave, as she fell, she hit a large log on the sand. the surf then pulled her tout sea, trapping her under the log. >> we've been having a lot of rain this week. rivers start to overflow. there are debris, logs and trees and sticks. and at that time you know these things will start floating up on to different beaches. that is what we were seeing yesterday. >> family members tried but couldn't lift the log off the girl. emergency responders did. the girl was transported first to dominican hospital in santa cruz then air lifted to stanford medical center where she lied. >> the -- died. >> the log was about a thousand pounds. and so we're not sure what happened to her, what the cause of death was but we're still going to have to do research into that.

road quite a while. there is this tree toppling over this morning in oakland. looks like it just missed a car across the street and this did knock out power, caltrans had to send a crew to the connector ramp shut down until 1:00 this afternoon. the sierra coated overnight with another new layer of snow. motorists had to use chains this morning and that is lifted by afternoon. >> and the moving mud knocked out power and closed a road in piedmont. there is nick smith live tonight. nick? big mess. >> it has been a headache for people here, most have been without power, take a look over the shoulder. that is where they're

struggling to clean up. this is why this slide and road closure created a headache. there is a break in the weather with a chance to do repairs and restore power to homeowners that has been sitting in the dark because of downed trees and damaged power lines. >> this tension got strong enough, you can hear vibrations and pops. we had no power. >> last night's thunderstorms blanketed the bay area, producing heavy rains and strikes than the area had seen in years. >> now there is about 1400 customers. bay area wide, without without power and collectively we've seen about 22,000 customers at sometime or another without power and lightning did play a part in that. >> heavy rains pelted piedmont

uprooted trees and turned oversaturated soils into a mess. but piedmont was not alone. on prince street there is this tree came down, drivers had to battle with slick roads and street flooding. in peed yont traffic has been impacted. drivers coming from the east on moraga avenue being told to find another way across town, creating a stream of onlookers and frustrated commuters. >> this crew is trying to get the power back on to this neighborhood so residents do not find themselves sitting in the dark. >> and there are crews across the bay area dealing with storms. a massive oak fell about a mile and a half off highway 17.

the tree snagged cable and phone lines. and in live oak a lightning storm startled residents. dan says his dog had a tough time with thunder. >> she had been hour of kind of quivering and not understanding what is going on. but she seems to be fully recovered now. she's digging for a squirrel. >> a camper said that thunder also kept him awake. and a storm launched a series of lightning strikes, three hit plains in route from san jose international airport. a southwest and two alaska airlines were hit. another bolt smacked at united air lines flight to london out of san francisco international airport. it happened last night about 7:30. >> this is mighty big bang. my wife screamed and a kiddies

started crying and overhead things opened. and oxygen masks struck down. >> and this. >> this plane turned around, and landed just as a precaution no, injuries were reported. the passengers were put into hotels and took off this afternoon at 3:00. >> so dramatic. you know? amateur photographers sent us great pictures of the lightning that struck last night. take a look. there is this one to you report and capture that had amazing image. take a look at the lightning hitting the bay bridge. he was testing out a camera. there is another one from phil mcgrew. this is spectacular. also the bay bridge. he tells us he took it with a single to-second exposure, look how dramatic that is. lightning ping pongs around the bay bridge. this is from david jones.

there is another dramatic image. he says he had to take hundreds of shots just to get that one. >> when lightning hits, people come up with number of ajekt tiff autos shocking. o, m, g. a crazy storm. >> right. >> there are pictures taken through you reports. rainfall records shattered in several cities. there are people tweeting about the storm and sharing pictures and comments. wow. catching mother nature and love lightning picks. one was david jones of san francisco. >> this is straight. >> from his apartment, jones managed to shoot more than 300 pictures trying to get the dramatic ones. >> there is the picture everyone is talking about is a one showing eight bulbs

hitting or falling next to the bay bridge, appearing on basically every news web site in the world and phil mcgrew took that once in a lifetime picture, roger pena says it was a scary moment for one of his kids. >> with little kids it's -- it wasn't the way you wanted to enjoy. >> really loud. i couldn't sleep last night. >> this is nerve rattling. >> frightened, or amazed it's a night they'll always remember. >> and it was just spectacular, thanks to those folk who's sent in pictures, spencer we don't get this weather often, why so severe last night? >> there is classic ingredients. a cold air mass slashing with a warmer air mass in place

creating instability so extreme and sustained it produced thunderstorms and of course, hundreds of lightning strikes. and that is what happened. things are much, much calmer now. taking a look at live doppler 7 we've seen thunderstorms overinto central valley. there is showers, some locally heavy and widely scattered showers. we've seen scattered showers and one pocket of heavier rainfall moving from napa county now out towards solano county and eastern napa county over towards vacaville. and there is some heavy down pours in this area. it's widely scattered and light down into the south bay this, area of scattered showers was better organized. record rainfall did occur yesterday. records for the date of april 12th engineer san francisco, oakland and mountain view, and

>> closed captioning brought to you by mancini sleepworld. developing news from oakland. abc 7 news has just spoken to a woman who was just held hostage inside of a hotel room. the suspect actually tried to get away in that woman's clothing. mark? >> about 10:30 this moshing police spotted a stolen car here in front of the jack london inn. a man and woman recognized the man as a suspect in a kidnapping and assault in alameda. police believe the suspect was armed and dangerous and say he

was known to carry an assault weapon. when they caught him he was armed with nothing more than a disguise, dressed as a woman, pretending to be a resident of the moat hotel he changed into womens' clothing and tried to disguise his appearance. >> the kidnapping suspect burst into her room. >> i heard the door close. i turned around he was m my room like "shhh" he says he ordered her and her 10-year-old daughter to sit on the bed. he demanlded clothes and makeup he was practicing how to act like a girl around the police. >> did he threaten you? >> he never threatened me. >> did he have a weapon? >> was there a woman with him? >> no. he was by himself. he just didn't want to us least room. >> she says was she was in the room about an hour he tried to grab me by my hood. the police were at the end of

the exit. he seen them he was like okay, buy, see you later. he tried to play it off. >> the s.w.a.t. team grabbed him and got his companion, hiding in the hotel. oakland police do not know if she was also wanted in the alameda county kidnapping and assault case. the search shut down the amtrak line and businesses in a two-block radius. >> took my business for a loop today there is no walk in traffic. and clients couldn't get in. >> we should explain police say the suspect and woman in the car. when police stopped, the suspect and romwoman ran into the hotel. police have not identified the man or the woman saying this is an adda meeta case and all of our calls have gone unanswered. >> thank you. in martinez a 3-year-old girl

rushed into surgery after being mauled by her grandmother's pit bull. the attack happened in a bedroom of a home on plum street. the girl rushed to oakland childrens hospital with major injuries we understand to her face. the dog will be quarantined then euthanized by animal services department. police in mill valuey and marin county sheriff deputies looking for a man on a black motorcycle who shot up this pickup truck. this morning witnesses heard shots and a sound of a motorcycle speeding away. shots fired near the 2:00 a.m. club. the driver and his passenger suffered minor cuts from the shattered glass but no bullet wounds. >> a san francisco giants honored a special long time fan before home opener today. brian stow appeared on a video screen and said "good luck, son" as 13-year-old tyler stow threw out the first pitch. he was beaten into a coma

apple issued a response to accusations of a conspiracy. the justice department filed

suit wednesday accusing apple of five major publishers of raising e book prices by $2 to $5 each costing more than $100 million. today a spokeswoman called those allegations untrue and said, quote, the launch of the store fostered innovation and competition, breaking amazon's grip on the industry. apple stock took a plunge today, almost $18 a share, but it's still up 50%. >> there is record profits at wells fargo. the bank made four and a quarter billion. mortgage lending is strong. percentage of loans has fallen to pre-recession levels. same story at jp morgan chase. and they set aside almost half of the amount to fight legal battles. google's two for one stock

san francisco child abuse prevention center is rolling out a campaign aimed at teaching children how to keep sthechls safe. there is a pilot project because its national child abuse prevention month. >> no one has met my new frind this first grade class in san francisco is the first in the city to see the new training tools to teach them how to protect thefl selfs from abuse including child sexual abuse,
