really don't want to know. >> and from a man who did just that. last night during this nasty thunderstorm. lloyd blair went out to get hot dogs before they burned. that is when bad luck hit. >> lightning hit the fence in the backyard and i saw it came across the luachb and right up the barbecue and into me. it picked me up and dropped me. >> he managed to get himself inside. they responded to the 911 call. >> the lightning was in the vicinity of the area but close enough the energy affected him. >> the force and electricity associated with the lightning doesn't just affect the playing it strikes but the perimeter around it. >> i was confused and worried. >> but stable. first responders took him to the

e.r.. >> basically they got said i was okay. >> cal fire captain grew up in the bay area and he knows how storms but he was impressed with last night's system. >> i can't remember a storm that came through with that much force. >> usually the department only gets two to three calls a night but last night was anything but the usual. >> we had 13 calls and another 23 other calls in uninning core pretty sonoma county. >> if you see lining get inside and stay away from the windows. >> dan: we're not used to it around here. the national weather service says an average of 54 people are killed by lightning. hundreds more are permanently injured. so far three deaths this year from lightning. the national weather service

says a tornado touched down late this afternoon in north of sacramento. it packed 75 mile-an-hour winds. it was powerful to blow a roof off a car dealership. it was reported on tuesday. >> sandhya patel is here with a look at live doppler. >> i want to show you what it looks like to the west, southwest of yuba city. eyewitnesses in the area say they saw a sudden shift in the wind and swirling clouds at the time of the tornado. it was a ef-0 on the scale. taking us back last couple of hours, we are continuing to see showers in and around the area but still skirting the area so they could still see showers but the severe weather threat is over. here in the bay area, hates quiet down quite a bit. yesterday, the national weather service reported there was 750 lightning strikes, cloud-to-ground, that doesn't

include cloud to cloud lightning strikes. san francisco, over an inch of rain. oakland airport. mountain view, all new records, san jose, .82 inch and salinas, .45 inch. isolated possibility of a shower but will the wet weather linger in into the washington, d.c.? >> another bolt of lightning -- weekend. >> the bolt smacked their tent, luckily it was an indirect hit. they were numb and scared but not seriously hurt. it struck a plane taking off from sfo passengers on the united airlines flight out of london to sfo was certainly frightened. >> it was like bang.

and all the things dropped out and oxygen masks came down. >> dan: plane landed at sfo just as a precaution. no injuries. in san jose a southwest plane and two alaska airline flights were hit but no one was hurt in those instances here. muddy mess left behind by heavy rain in the east bay is going to take a while to clean up. morgan avenue will be closed until at least tomorrow. these are pictures of what the road looks like now. overnight the road got so saturated with rain an entire hill slide went sliding bringing down a tree. these storms also hit southern california with rain and snow. big bear in the mountains was under winter storm warnings. look at that. near whiteout conditions and there has been talk of possible small srndz tornadoes in the area. >> sadly the storm brought tragedy. the little girl killed in the rough surf in santa cruz. she was playing in the surf at a

beach when she was hit by a rogue wave. she was pinned to the beach by a huge log. the child died. the family is from san jose and their name has not been released. family is in deep mourning tonight. >> so much coverage continues online. you can check the forecast any time at abc7news.com. be sure to check out the latest video and viewer pictures that have been sent in. it wasn't the weather but a pit bulldog that brought tragedy to another girl. she is three years old in hospital with terrible bite wounds to her face. tomas ramon has the story. how is she doing? >> reporter: we haven't been able to get an update on this toddler's condition. but contra costa sheriff's department told us she is being brought here and she will need surgery for the bite wounds on

her face. >> this is 7-year-old white pit bull. the dog bit at child in the face. >> lieutenant williams says the girl was visiting her grandmother here in martinez when the dog attacked. they heard a commotion outside about 11:30 in the morning. >> the street was blocked off. like i said she was all wrapped up. >> the girl was brought here to oakland children's hospital for treatment. she underwent surgery this afternoon. neither the girl nor the grandmother that owns the dog has been named. >> the dog was surrendered and placed under state mandated quarantine for ten days. after that it will be humanely euthanized. >> i think they all should be

put to sleep, especially when they done this. >> the next-door neighbor the dog was never aggressive. >> never barked much. it's a friendly dog. >> neighbors say they hardly ever saw the dog because it spent most of its time in the backyard. they say dogs aren't the turn-ons blame. >> wrong people get good dogs and it's how people turn the dogs out. >> reporter: contra costa animal services says it's investigating whether or not turk has a history of aggressive behavior and/or biting. on top of the tragedy the grandmother could face criminal charges. >> dan: before the home opener they honored a special long time fan. bryan stow appeared to a video

they were involved with prostitutes before the president's arrival there. a dozen agents were reportedly received of duty and secret service is not confirming the number. >> several blocks on jack london square were shut down as police searched for a man they considered armed and dangerous. when they found him, he had tried to pull a fast one. >> police believe the suspect was armed and dangerous. they say she was known to carry an assault weapon. when they finally caught him he was armed with nothing more than a disguise. he was dressed as a woman pretending to be a resident of the hotel. >> he changed into women's clothing. >> she was in the room when the kidnapping suspect burst in. >> i heard the door close and he was in my room. >> the man ordered her and ten-year-old daughter while sit

on the bed while he demanded clothes and makeup. >> did he threaten you? >> no. >> did he have a weapon with him? >> he was by himself. he didn't want us to leave the room. >> reporter: she was in the room with the man for about an hour before she was able to escape. >> he tried to grab me by my hood but the police were at the end. he was like, okay, bye. >> and they grabbed him without a struggle. they got his companion who was hiding in the hotel. oakland police do not know if she was also wanted in the alameda kidnapping and assault case. the search shut down the amtrak line and businesses in a two block radius around the hotel. >> there was no walk in traffic. the clients couldn't get in.

>> while saw them in the car outside, when the police stopped and got out of their car the suspect and woman ran into the hotel. oakland police have not identified the man or woman. they say it's an alameda case and all of our calls for information have gone unanswered. mark matthews, abc7 news. >> an update on the fatal standoff in modesto. they haven't identified the body where a gunman killed a sheriff's deputy and locksmith. they believe it is the tenant they were trying to evict. it ended late last night when tear gas and flash grenades set the apartment on fire. two people killed were 53-year-old sheriff's deputy robert paris and 35-year-old modesto locksmith.
