inside. fire district responded to the 911 call. >> the lightning was probably in the vicinity area and close enough the personal energy affected him. >> kind of electricity associated with the lightning doesn't affect the place it strikes but the perimeter around it. >> i was kind of confused. a little worried. >> but stable. first responders took him to the e.r.. they got me to the hospital and basically said i was okay. >> the captain grew up in the bay area and even he was impressed. >> i don't remember a storm with that much force. >> usually the department only gets two on three calls a night. we had about 13 calls within a 24-hour period in the district itself and another 13, to 14 called in uninning corporation

rated san mateo county. >> get inside and stay away from the windows. national weather service says a tornado touched down yesterday afternoon in yuba city north of sacramento. you can see the damage caused by the 75 mile-per-hour winds blew the roof off of a car dealership. weather service says the twister was on the ground for about one-eighth of a mile. that long enough to do all that damage. nobody was injured. a tornado was reported on stockton on wednesday. >> the muddy mess left behind heavy rains in the east bay is going to take a while to clean up. in fact moraga avenue in piedmont is going to be closed at least through today. this is what the road looked like. the ground was so saturated with all the rain it sent the hill slide sliding bringing a big tree down with it. it hit also hit southern california with rain and snow. big bear was under winter storm

warnings and grapevine was shut down for several hours because of snow. it is now open. the to storm also brought tragedy. a little girl was killed in the rough surf in santa cruz. she was playing near the beach when she was hit by a log about 12 feet long. she was pinned to the beach. the child died after being airlifted to stanford hospital it is not clear whether she was killed by blunted force by the log or drowning. check the forecast any time at abc7news.com. be sure to check out the latest video and viewer pictures. >> a three-year-old girl at the children's hospital of oakland where he is under went facial surgery in martinez. the girl will live but the dog will not. >> reporter: in is turk. she seven-year-old pit bull the

dog for some unknown reason bit the girl in the face. >> the child was on the bed and the dog was not on the bed. that is all we know at this time. >> she was visiting her grandmother when the grandmother's dog attacked. the neighbor heard commotion outside about 11:30 in the morning. >> the street was blocked off. then i saw it. she was all wrapped up. >> girl was brought here to oakland's children open for treated treatment. she underwent surgery and neither the girl nor the grandmother has been named. turk has received a death sentence for the attack. >> the dog was surrendered and placed under state mandated quarantine for ten days and after that he will be euthanized. >> i think they all should be put to sleep, especially when they have done this. >> a next-door neighbor says the

dog was never aggressive. >> doesn't bark much. actually not at all. it's a friendly dog. >> reporter: neighbors say they hardly ever saw the dog because it spent most of the time in indoors or the backyard. >> wrong people get good dogs and it's how people turn the dogs out. >> they are investigating as to whether or not he had aggressive behavior in the past. if he has on top of the tragedy, the grandmother could also face criminal charges. >> terry: right now, volunteers are out again looking for sierra lamar. she disappeared 29 days ago and she never showed up for school. sheriff investigators and volunteers will resume the search. they spent the second day in a row diving in near the

reservoir. karina rusk has the details. >> reporter: the sheriff's office is navigating the murky water. they check out eight items of interest captured by a sonar device. it gives you an idea what the team is working with. the item on the right turned out to be a car. >> it may not be one image what we're looking at. it's often a combination of two or three. >> they ruled out five items of interest at chesboro reservoir. >> there was a large rock formation and a lot of wood and tree stumps. >> either object is relocated using gps and a dive of 40 to 100 feet is required this cage is dropped into the water and acts as a familiar marker of sorts. >> we'll drop a came down and

>> terry: several blocks were shut down for hours after police searched for a man considered armed and dangerous. when they found him. he didn't look like a man at all. here is mark matthews. >> police believe the suspect was armed and dangerous. he was known to carry an assault

weapon. when they finally caught him this afternoon he was armed with nothing more than a disguise. he was dressed as a woman pretending to a resident of the hotel. >> he changed into woman's clothing and he tried to disguise his appearance. >> she was in the room on the fourth floor. >> i heard the door closed and turned around and he was in my room. >> man ordered her and her ten-year-old daughter to sit on the bed while he demanded clothes and makeup. >> he was practicing how he was going to act like a girl around the police. >> did he threaten you? >> no. >> did he have a weapon? >> no. >> was there a woman with him? >> no. >> she was in the room with the man for about an hour before she was able to escape. >> he tried to grab me by my hood, but i guess the police were at the exit and when he see

them, he was like bye. >> oakland's s.w.a.t. team grabbed him without a struggle and they got his companion who was hiding in the hotel. oakland police do not foe noe if she is wanted in the kidnapping case. it shut down the amtrak and shut down businesses in a two block radius around the hotel. >> there was no walk-in traffic. >> the clients couldn't get in. >> we should explain they saw the suspect and woman in the car outside when the police stopped and got out of their car. suspect and woman ran into the hotel and the search was on. oakland police have not identified the man or the woman. they say this is an alameda case. so far all of our calls into alameda for information have gone unanswered. >> a cupertino company has been identified the source of a national salmonella outbreak.

moon marine u.s.a. sold the yellow fin tuna. 12 people had to be hospitalized. it was sold to grocery stores and restaurants. moon marine have pulled all the affected fish. >> the world's longest ocean race as they start the next leg outside the golden gate. they were at jack london square. two crew members from a storm battered yacht were rescued by the coastguard about two weeks ago. 400 miles out to sea. the next leg takes them into panama hopefully on smoother seas. frances dinglasan is here. what a difference a day makes. >> it's a little breezy. >> they need that. >> and i think you're going to like what we have in store for you today. sunnier conditions. warmer temperatures and i'll have accu-weather seven-day

>> terry: on day when forecasters are warning of storms from texas to minnesota, three tornadoes have touched down near oklahoma city. >> oh, god, here we go. it's a tornado. oh, god! help me. >> a storm chaser clearly got too close, twister hit his car, albeit a relatively small twister. they warn more powerful storms are expected to hit the midwest later today. a 24-hour warning is first one in a long time in that area. we had one up in sacramento. >> it's crazy. i can't believe that. we have such extreme weather. we're not use to that in the bay area. today i think we'll be closer to what you expect. >> it sounds good to just about everybody. >> spring like warm and sun rer conditions. take you outside and live camera

shots. first we'll start off in tahoe where there is a light snow right now. this is from heavenly. you can see, it's cloudy, as well. they'll get the chance of snow showers throughout the day. it gives you a nice can chance to get skiing in before the season really ends. here is another live shot. partly cloudy conditions in santa cruz. it will be nice day to head outdoors and sunshine over the bay bridge in san francisco. so, here is a look at live doppler 7-hd to show you what it's been doing the past few hours. it's not much. we have a few radar returns but any measurable rainfall save for ben lomond and santa cruz mountains, we did get hundredth of an inch. that is about it. current temperatures in the 40s still. 47 in san francisco. 49 in mountain view. 50 in half moon bay.

also, look out for breezy conditions this afternoon. right now, it's not too bad but we will see gusts right now even half moon bay from the north at 28 miles per hour. this afternoon we'll see winds from the west about 10-20 miles an hour. plus you can expect a nice day. we'll have a cool morning and then it will be sunny and breezy and warmer week in store for all of us. put the umbrellas away for a while. here is a look at satellite and radar image the storm is moving south and east. high pressure building. that is going to give sunnier conditions over the next few days and temperatures will warm up a few more degrees for tomorrow. here is a look at that forecast model. really just cloud cover dissipating and then by 1:00 we'll see a lot of sunshine for the afternoon. it's going to be a nice day to be outdoors. in san francisco, 60 degrees is your high for today. we'll be warming up to the 60s compared to the 50s yesterday.

lunchtime and into the afternoon. that means temperatures will be warming up a few more degrees compared to yesterday. even getting into the mid-60s in antioch. 65 in antioch, 63 in oakland. 60 in san francisco. 65 in santa rosa. 58 at half moon bay but look for 63 in san jose. low 60s through morgan hill and gilroy and hollister. with 61 in santa cruz. around the state, tahoe will be pretty cool, 45 degrees. they had flurries in truckee earlier this morning. los angeles, 62 degrees, mild in palm springs at 68. also a lot of folks heading to the giants game including terry mcsweeney. the gamer starts at 6:05 tonight against the pirates, partly cloudy with temperatures 54 degrees and clear, temperatures will drop to 50 degrees by about 9:00 tonight. you'll definitely want to have an extra layer handy with you. and also percent of normal in

[ laughter ] the san francisco child abuse prevention center is rolling out a brand-new campaign aimed at teaching children to keep themselves safe. it's national child abuse prevention month. here a cheryl jennings. >> this first grade class at

argon elementary school is the first in the city to see the new training tools to teach them how to protect themselves from abuse. that includes sexual abuse. miss molly handles it with a lot of humor. >> we all have private body parts. >> the safety awareness class includes new dolls wearing bathing suits. >> do we go swimming naked? >> no. >> we have to cover our private body parts up. >> they developed the safety program over 15 years of working with the san francisco child abuse prevention center. it offers a crisis talk line for stressed out family members, counseling and classes and temporary day care and access to computers. but this child safety program is a front line effort to arm kids against offenders. the message is simple. they know, get away and tell someone.

sedan and $9,000 check for his old car. >> stuck the check in and took it and spit back out at me. >> it was not so easy getting that nine grand into his bank account. >> john says he tried to deposit the check into a bank of america atm located inside this grocery store but the check popped back out. >> i put it in again, next thing i see, the check going in and it's like this. i hit every button to try to get it returned. check was never returned. >> john says there was no receipt, no deposit and the check was gone. he had only this stub to show for it. >> john and his wife elizabeth drove to a nearby branch to get help. >> they said they couldn't do anything about it. they are not in charge of that. i'll give you a number to call. >> the couple did call.

bank offered a temporary credit of $9,000 while it researched their case. they promised a response within six weeks but john and elizabeth wanted to find their $9,000 right now. >> i said why can't you get somebody to come down now and look at the machine and see if it is there? we can't do that. there is a process. >> i said get it back in a month's time, she said maybe. >> she contacted "7 on your side" and we contacted bank of america. the bank tells us weeks later it still hadn't found the check. private vendor services local stores like this one and vendor never reported finding the check. however, they took action. they contacted the card that issued the check, a company in sausalito. right away they cancelled the missing check and write a new one. now john and elizabeth are
