sailors missing at sea is now over. the pacific proved too much for a crew of eight on a racing yacht. good evening. i'm ama dates. >> and i'm alan wang. it has been more than 24 hours since the crew was swept over board and slammed against the jag ged -- jagged rocks. one is dead and three rescued and now we are learning more about the tragedy at sea. >> thomas roman has more on the crew members. lilian kim has the latest on the search for the missing sailors. >> she is live from the coast guard station on yes, sir bough buena island. >> co this coast guard cuter was involved in the search, but it won't be going back. the search has officially been called off. >> this still photo shows the sailboat low speed chase pinned against the rocks on the fairlawn eye ndz la, one

day after a tragic turn of events. one of the crew members died while four are still missing. she took the photo while out at sea this afternoon. >> i was heart broken when we saw a sailboat on the rocks knowing what happened yesterday. it was horrific to see that in person. >> eight people were on board when a large wave knocked some on to the ocean. they encounter eds another large wave that ran the boat aground. the winds were said to be up to 25 knots and swells as high as 17 feet. he takes people well watching all the time. >> it was knock a boat over like nothing.r is bad youwhen tu have to stay in the deeper water. >> the coast guard rescued three surviving sailors. they are shown hosting one of them on the helicopter.

then the coast guard spent the day looking for them. three cutters were involved in the effort, but the search came up empty. >> the coast guard has been searching for more than 30 hours which is beyond the calculated survive ability window. we are calling off the search. the coast guard would like to extend our condolences to the friends and family of the missing and the deceased. >> reporter: the temperature of the water was said to be about 50 degrees. avid sailors say 50% die within 50 minutes in 50-degree water. live on yerba buena island, abc7 news. >> thank you, lilian. now to thomas roman who is live in the newsroom with what we have learned about the missing sailors. thomas? >> ama, hundreds of people attended the vigil for the even though the s.ailors in even though the search is over for their missing friends, they are still holding out some hope they will be found alive. mourners and friends of the surviving crew seen here during happier days filled the san francisco yacht clubhouse

in belvedere tonight. 41-year-old matt cusath in was killed when the boat was swamped in the high seas. his body was recovered by an international guard helicopter. brian swift says everyone inside was stunned. >> nothing like this has ever happened. they said in the history of a club we have never lost anybody. >> one of the missing crew members is alexis bush of larkspur seen with nick vas. he suffered a broken leg in the accident. he left the vigil 0 crutches surrounded by friends. he declined comments. richard thorton, a long-time friend is feeling his loss. >> i grieve his loss. he was young and vibrant and he was smiling at life. he was doing what he loved to do. >> daphne church refuses to believe he was lost forever.

>> i felt connected to him all day. and really hoping that he is going to make it. >> there is no life in that water. magic would be the greatest thing. >> the fourth missing crew member was morris visiting from ireland. the long-time sailors believe everyone was doing what they wanted to do. thorton said it best. >> they did this with a smile on their face. they are gone. >> now alexis bush is the daughter of cory bush, the former scute vice president to the san francisco giants. they say the tragedy is being felt by competitive sailors around the world. two of the missing sailors are his nay are bos. >> -- neighbors. 61 yachts set out on the 48-mile course that began at 9:45 yesterday morning.

the race started near san francisco's uh quack particular park -- aquatic park. the yacht race has been held annually for more than 100 years. stay with abc7 news for the latest on these missing sailors. you can go to abc7.com anytime for updates on the story. in other news, two people are dead in what petaluma police are calling a murder-suicide. several people called 9-1-1 to report gunshots on keller street around 2:00. officers discovered a gun lying next to a man and woman who were suffering from gunshot wounds. >> apparently they are visiting a person inside ken keller. it is an attorney. >> divorce attorney? >> i don't know what type of attorney. >> the press democrat identifies the people as kevin conover and her wife, kim. both were rushed to santa rosa

memorial hospital. richmond police have one suspect in custody and are looking for another one. officers and k-9 units searched earlier this afternoon. the search site was a few blocks away from where the suspects crashed into a light pole. this all happened near the intersection of carson boulevard and bay view avenue in richmond. >> tomorrow marks one -- tomorrow marks one month in the disappearance of sierra lamar. they believe she was abducted. the volunteers searchers intend to keep on looking until she is found, and so far they have searched several areas around morgan hill while the sheriff divers looked for clues in nearby lakes and reservoirs. they plan to hold a prayer meeting is -- at burnett medical school. they #r* negotiating to extend their stay.

today the san francisco chronicle reports that eliath a lopez is communicating through intermediaries. he is under court order to have no contact with her, and she is under court order to return to san francisco on april 28th. she pleaded guilty to false imprisonment related to a domestic abuse incident involving his wife, and he has been suspended without pay. the case heads back to court on april 19th. a curveng pink boulevard almost took the life of another driver. his are cay teetered pre -- his car teetered precariously after he missed a hiker and skited off the road. they carefully crept out of ande the car, and he says he was surprised to see there were no reflecters, guardrails or signs marking the curve. >> the police officers said most of them were knocked out by cars. and there have been numerous accidents throughout the years. >> one tow truck company refused to pull the vehicle off the ledge.

twister after twister formed menacing the midwest. two developed at the same time in cherokee, oklahoma. >> definitely we heard all of this noise. >> in iowa a hospital took direct hit. all in its path survived. lightning knocked out the town's early warning system. when it was over five were dead including a father and two daughters. and several homes and buildings were leveled especially in this business district. >> despite the devastation, the owners were surprised at what they could salvage. the bookshelf is still standing with all of the file folders and knick-knacks in tact as well as the clock that stopped at the moment the twister hit. >> the office chairs, monitors and even a large tv. >> i'm shocked there is anything left. it is total destruction out

result in a massive strike possibly delaying the fall semester. the faculty members will be voting through april 27th. the searchers at the university of california san francisco have good news regarding treatment of one of the more common types of leukemia. the researchers have developed a new sequencing technology targeting a certain mu tated gene from an acute myloid leukemia. getting a certain profile will help doctors personalize the drug treatments for patients. the research was published in the journal nature. a massive study of the brain's genes have identified several that may develop your intelligence, brain size or increased your risk for a disease your children could inherit. 200 scientists and over 100 institutions worldwide contributed to the largest brain study to date. some changes coming to the commuters who use the golden gate bridge. it will be closed nightly from about 8:00 p.m. until noon.

52 in san rafael. 48 in half moon bay. and los gatos right now is 50 degrees. so here is a look at some highlights to get you through at least the next three to five days. we'll go with the coastal clouds overnight and pushing inland. it will be with us tomorrow morning and then get ready for a sunny afternoon tomorrow. we'll keep some patchy clouds near the coast, and then a big warm up expected as we head to wednesday, thursday and friday with temperatures climbing up close to 80 degrees. here is what i'm talking about, the close up satellite, you can see the low clouds and the fog. we have a pretty good westerly wind component. anything that is out there will just move inland overnight tonight. the one things these clouds will do, it will have to insulate us. it is 44 for santa rosa. nab paw 45. -- napa 45. the overnight low, san francisco 49. 48 in oakland and 46 morgan hill and 45 for livermore.
