amy hollyfield is live at the san francisco yacht club in belvedere to explain what happened. >> reporter: they were participating in a 100-year-old tradition, a race this san francisco yacht club was managing. now this club is in mourning. here's a still photo taken of the sailboat, it is call the low speed chase. i was pinned against the rocks. one crewmember was found dead after the racing accident. four crewmembers are still missing. there were a total of eight onboard. the coast guard recovered that dead body and then rescued three sailors. after a long day and four helicopters, they used an airplane and three cutters, the coast guard called often search. >> the coast guard has been searching more than 30 hours well beyond the calculated surviveability window. we are calling off the search. the coast guard would like to

extend our condolences. >> reporter: officials say a large wave knocked some of the crew into the ocean. the rest of team turned the body around to go and try and rescue them, that's when another large wave hit. that's what ran the boat aground. the winds were up to 25 knots, swells as high as 15 feet. the temperature of the water is estimated at 50°. sailors from this yacht club were part of the search. the coast guard has decided to suspend its search. now the sailors here must decide what to do next. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. this morning many who know the missing sailors are refusing to give up hope of finding them alive. hundreds attended a vigil last night. we are learning new details about the experienced crew of the boat. the skipper, 41-year-old james

vanished after leaving for school in morgan hill. volunteer searchers -- investigators believe that see rather was abducted. volunteer searchers are vowing to keep looking until she is found. they've searched several areas and were out again over the weekend. divers have looked in lakes and reservoirs. richmond police continue searching for one of two suspects involved in a high speed chase. it ended when the vehicle they were in crashed into a light pole near the intersection of carson and bay view avenue, north of the 80/580 split in richmond. police took one person into custody. officers and k-9 unit searched for the second person. police are saying little else about the case, including why police began the pursuit. faculty members at all 23

california state university campuses begin voting today on whether to strike. the vote comes a week after mediation between the university and the california faculty association ended without an agreement. main issues include pay and class size. the faculty association says the impasse is the first step towards a possible strike. the association says that walk-out could delay the fall semester. members will vote through april 27th. is -- san francisco police asking property owners to board up and fence in vacant buildings to pretend potential take overs from occupy professors. -- protest e the san francisco examiner reports rumors are swirling around a may 1st, take over of an undisclosed property. president obama is back home from south america this morning. he returns amid an investigation of is.

sunny later in the afternoon. highs in the 60s to lower 70s. this evening, partly cloudy with lows around 50. 4:42. notorious curve along grisly peak boulevard left a driver and passengers in a potentially dangerous predicament. the car theatered over the canyon after the driver swerved in the fog to miss a hiker and skidded off the road. he and his three passengers carefully crept out of the car and made it back to the road. he was surprised to see there were no reflectors, guardrails or signs marking the curve. >> the police officer said all of these streets, most knocked down by cars numerous accidents throughout the years. >> one tow truck company refused to pull the vehicle often ledge. so a heavy duty truck was called in. no one was hurt.

changes coming to commuters who use the golden gate bridge starting this evening part of boil drive will be closed nightly from 8 p.m. to noon. the right hand northbound lane will be closed so crews can remove sections of the adjacent bridge sidewalk in preparation for the full closure of doyle drive from april 27th, to april 30th, when crews will demolish the existing structures and transfer traffic to a temporary bypass. traffic using 19th avenue to the golden gate bridge will not ab affected. four top san francisco leaders about to receive big raises even the city pays a 170 million dollar deficit. voters approved a 2006 measure calling for salary reviews every five years. district attorney george gascon could receive additional $13,000. more than $8,000 for the public defender and nearly $8,000 for mayor lee. also nearly $4,000 for city

clouds out there. later today our forecast is calling for sunny skies, warmer temperatures highs in the 60s and 70s. fuller forecast coming up later on. back to those deadly tornadoes that touched down over the weekend in the midwest. a small town in oklahoma was among the hardest hit. diana avellar is live in woodward, oklahoma with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the strongest tornado hit in kansas. the second strongest one is what caused all of the destruction you see behind me. leveling buildings, killing five and turning the weekend into the one forcasters feared. by the time the storms passed more than 130 tornadoes had ravaged kansas, northwest oklahoma, nebraska and iowa. neighbors came back too their homes to cleanup, crews searched for survivors in one of the hardest hit areas

woodward, oklahoma many caught off guard when warning sirens failed to sound after lightning disabled the system. >> i'm shocked there's anything left. total destruction. >> reporter: the tornado that tore through the community left a tragic legacy. five dead, including a father and his two daughters. dozens of homes and buildings leveled, especially in this business district. >> yet, while one office was completely destroyed the one directly next to it has picture frames on the wall and a mug still on a desk. trucks carrying food, water and other supplies are headed to the area where more than 8,000 residents are without power. >> very scary, first time we've been through anything like that. very scary. >> reporter: the governor toured the damage by air and on the ground. >> it has been encouraging to me to be here in woodward to see just the immediate response by so many great

government report. inspectors went to 24 nursing homes in several states, including california impacted bay disaster, emergency plans existed on paper but were all but worthless in a real tornado, flood or hurricane. the plans did not include coordinating with local authorities, notifying relatives and putting name tags on patients and identifying what kind of medications they are on in an evacuation. the report recommends medicare and medicaid aid training to the existing federal guidelines. two bay area companies teaming up to use social media for a medical study. they are going online to recruit 1,000 cancer warrants specifically they want to find out how well the drug avastin worked on breast cancer patients. fda pulled it off the market because of life-threatening
