good tuesday morning. thanks for joining us i'm eric thomas. and i'm katie marzullo in for kristen sze. this morning investigators say they have new leads in the disappearance of sierra lamar. terry mcsweeney is live in san jose. what do we know about these new leads? >> reporter: we knew new leads come as a result of crime lab analysis. sheriff's investigators not saying which evidence produced these new leads. when you are talking about crime lab analysis you are talking about a look at dna and trace evidence as investigators try to find a suspect. take a look at pictures. i cannot tell you what you are about to see is related to the new leads. we have divers in bodies of water, ponds less than a mile from sierra's home where she was last seen march 16th, she

never made it to the bus stop, phone and bag found nearby, no trace of her. the new leads may or may not have anything to do with the search yesterday in the waters. yesterday the search was going on at a number of locations near her place. meanwhile at the school hundreds of balloons were released carrying messages of hope for the safe return of sierra and her mother was there as she was speaking of hope. >> everybody, we are so grateful and giving us hope i know she is going to be returned to us, because of that. >> reporter: the search for sierra will continue today in those bodies of water. that search going in those locations all weeklong. they've checked this water before. this time they are using new scanning equipment that gives them a better look at the bottom of those bodies of

water. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. 5:03. parents in a large east bay school district are keeping an extra careful eye out as they send their kids to school. many got a disturbing call about an attempt to kidnap a student. amy hollyfield is live in concord with more on this. >> reporter: this is a good reminder for parents to have the talk with children about stranger-danger maybe do it this morning on the way to school. here's what happened in concord it was yesterday afternoon officials say -- yesterday morning, a 7th grade girl was walking along glacier drive to eldorado middle school, when a man asked her to get into a beige colored van. the school sent out an automated message describing what happened next. >> she said no and walk add way he continued to ask her to get in the van stating he would give her a ride to school. she repeatedly told him no.

>> reporter: the girl was able to make it to a safe location she okay. she did the right thing. she is a good example for other kids. now not only is the conversation here in concord about what to do if this happens, but also to keep a lookout for this man. he's described as heavy set in his 30s, black mustache and goatee. remember, he was driving that beige van. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. this morning the offshore yacht racing association says it will wait to see the coast guard's complete report on last weekend's deadly boating accident near the farallon islands before deciding if any changes should be made. racing competitor in another boat saw the wrecked yacht after it hit the rocks off the farallon islands this is -- he says the skipper of the vessel

told him he turned the boat to retrieve four crewmembers who had been swept overboard. the death of one sailor and four missing has many asking if the skipper sailed to too close to the island. race officials say it was too dangerous to stop and render aid. the tragedy will have sailors debating the treasury of the farallons and how close is close enough. oakland police continue searching for a suspect in the shooting that left one dead and another wounded near mills college. someone fired gunshots into a red mara stopped at the intersection of cal varez avenue and buhl street late yesterday. -- the driver of the camaro was taken to the hospital his passenger died at the scene the incident shutdown traffic and 580 macarthur off-ramp was closed for three hours. crimestoppers offering a $5,000 reward for information about the person who kidnapped and assaulted a woman in

oakland's lake shore district. she was walking from a home in the 2800 block of lake avenue early sunday morning when a man forced her into a car, drove her to a location near highland hospital where he assaulted her and pushed her out on to the sidewalk. price of a pothole could be determined today. the board of supervisors set to vote on a pay out for a woman who tripped and break bottle of her feet in 2010. the -- and broke both of her feet in 2010. she is asking for medical expenses and lost wages her attorney says the city was negligent in not warning or guarding pedestrians from the obstacle >> a committee representing the oakland coliseum is recommending a change in which company will run the complex. the mercury news reports the committee is recommending that a sports entertainment giant replace -- [ unintelligible ] the city looking to expand and

improve profitability at the coliseum, aeg owns and operates 100 facilities around the world, including the staples center in l.a. and the race in san francisco existing management company has been running the coliseum for nearly 14 years in an effort to cut costs and try to make coliseum less of a burden to taxpayers. this morning san rafael city leaders are asking staff to come up with recommendations for a tougher anti-smoking ordinance. a previous recommendation called for banning smoking in 75% of apartments and in all outdoor dining areas. smokers would be prevented from lighting up at bus stops atm's and all public vents. some councilmembers are asking for all apartment buildings in any building with two or more apartments. the rain and snow has taken an edge off a dry winter. 60% of the amount of water

per day insiders say we could be talking about millions of users the amount would be staggering compared to the $25,000 imposed by the fcc yesterday for google blocking the investigation into a privacy breach involving street view cars. defense secretary panetta says he regrets the cost to taxpayers for his weekend trips to his monterey farm. those trips cost $32,000 each because panetta is required to travel on military aircraft so he can remain in secure contact with the white house and military leaders. he says he's looking for ways to find savings. he has commuted home at least 27 times since he took over the pentagon's top job in july. the total cost to taxpayers, $860,000. panetta has reimbursed the government about $17,000. homeland security chief janet napolitano is recruiting bay area engineering students for national cyber security

a girl says she was almost kidnapped. amy hollyfield is live in concord with what happened. >> reporter: the good news is, not much happened because the girl did the right thing. she is safe with her family. the 7th grader was walking to eldorado middle school yesterday morning when she says a man in a beige colored van pulled up and asked her to get in. parents heard about this in an automated call from the school district. >> man is described as being bald, in his 30s, heavy set with a black mustache and goatee. possibly a poll -- possibly of polynesian descent. the purpose of this call is to ask you to remind your children not to speak -- >> reporter: the girl did the right thing, kept saying no and was able to make it to school safely. officials are encouraging parents to talk to their kids

preconference visits those cost more than $130,000 in public funds. these are photographs of neeley in a luxury suite during one of those visits. this morning we are learning of one death, no major damage after a powerful 6.7 quake in chile. the quake hit last night in central chile shaking caught on air. the quake was centered near the coastal port and strong enough to shake buildings in the capital city of santiago, 70 miles away. one man died of apparent heart attack during the quake. major test gets underway at uc san diego this morning aimed at making buildings more earthquake-proof these photos show a five story mock hospital that will be used. engineers will shake it to see was inside the building at various magnitude feuds. more than 500 sensors and eight -- 80 cameras will be used to collect data.

work to make the doyle drive approach earthquake safe is taking a big step for. far right lane northbound over pass closed as crews begin demolishing part of the existing overpass. the work will continue from 8 p.m. to noon everyday until april 27th. that day all of doyle drive will be closed for three days so the entire overpass can be torn down. >> it is a huge milestone for the project because once we accomplish this goal, traffic will be off the old structure. >> here's a map of the stretch of doyle drive being worked on now through the 27th. the road will be replaced by the new one billion dollar presidio parkway, the entire project is expected to be complete in 2015. san francisco mooney officials are expected to vote today on two key proposals. one would let young people ride buses and street cars free. the other would charge divers for neared parking on sundays.
