disappearance of sierra lamar we get word investigators are following new leads. terry mcsweeney is live in san jose. what are they saying about the new leads? >> reporter: they say they come from crime lab analysis they are not getting into specifics. if you are talking about crime lab analysis, you're talking about dna, trace evidence and things like that. having said that, we are going to be showing you pictures right now of divers going into the water near where sierra lamar lives. can't say this is tied to this new lead. the new lead that the sheriff's office is talking about. we have divers going in less than a mile from where she lives. they have searched this before and they have found nothing but they are back out there again. she left her home not far from these ponds march 16th, never made it to the school bus stop. they are using special scanning equipment this time they say allows for a more thorough search. >> provides reflections and

shadows. it gives you more things to look at than just a normal picture. the shadows can sometimes tell us more about what we are looking at than the reflection. >> reporter: this new diving effort comes on the same day the sheriff's office announced new leads, result of crime lab reports. investigators found her phone, her handbag with some clothes in it. they have found a box labeled handcuffs, with used condoms inside. whether any of that has anything to do with these new leads they are talking about or something else entirely, sheriff's office is not saying. we know that sierra's mother was down at sierra search headquarters in morgan hill yesterday and there was some effort to lift her spirits. here we are more than a month since she disappeared march 16th, no trace of the girl. some new leads ambiguous. we'll show you how they tried to lift her mother's spirits

yesterday in morgan hill. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. >> that poor family. this morning police have a warning for parents and students in concord after a report of an attempted kidnapping. a 7th grade girl was walking to school yesterday when a man asked her to get into a became colored van. >> she said no and walk add way he continued to ask her to get in the van, stating he]uliñ would give her a ride to school. she repeatedly told him no. >> that is audio from an automated message sent out by the district's superintendent warning parents with about the incident. the girl managed to get to a safe location. the man in the van described as heavy set in his 30s with a black mustache and goatee. amy hollyfield will have more at 6:30. this morning the offshore yacht race agousa social says t will wait to see the coast guard's complete report on last weekend's deadly accident before deciding if

any changes -- yacht racing competitor was in another boat and says he saw the yacht named the low speed chase, after it hit the rocks off the farallon islands. the low speed chase ended up on the rocks. this is footage of the crash. several captains said they got a call to help after hearing the crew had been tossed into the ocean. none could get close enough to save them. >> at some point, they figured was nothing they could do and they on rather than stay in what can be a dangerous place. >> life vests were mandatory for every ship in the 105-year-old race, safety tethers which would have tied the crew to the vessel were operational. --2l.u were option . >> people are sending condolences on a facebook page for the crewmembers this morning called in memory of the low speed chase, that's the name of the boat. here's the page. you will find a link on our website, abc7news.com. new this morning, committee representing the

oakland coliseum is calling for a different company to run the coliseum complex. the mercury news reports the committee is recommending sports entertainment giant replace smg, aeg owns and operates 100 facilities around the world. the existing company smg has been running the coliseum nearly 14 years in an effort to cut costs and try to make the coliseum less of a burden on taxpayers. this morning san rafael city leaders are asking staff to come up with recommendations for a tougher anti-smoking ordinance. previous recommendation called for banning smokes in 75% of apartments and in all outdoor dining areas. smokers would be prevented from lighting up at bus stops, atm's and all public events. some councilmembers are asking for the ban to apply to all apartment buildings with two

tporltd official anniversary ceremony. hours from now the agency that oversees muni will decide on whether to enforce parking meters sunday. the municipal transportation agency will take up the issue today. the city wants to enforce metered parking from noon to 6:00 sundays to raise revenue for the mta. the agency is facing projected 53 million dollar shortfall over the next two years. religious groups saying it would create a hardship for people of faith who are finding church. muni officials are also considering a program that would allow the city's youth to ride buses and trains for free. opponents say the 6.6 million dollar cost is too much for the cash strapped mt -- mta to bear. others have called the program to be limited only to teens from economically disadvantaged families. this morning more legal trouble and potentially new fines for google. the federal trade commission

is investigating google's program that bypass default privacy settings of ample's safari browser. ftc could fine google $16,000, per violation, per day, insiders say we could be talking with about millions of users. the amount could be staggering compared to the $25,000 fine imposed by the fcc yesterday after accusing google of blocking the federal investigation into a privacy breach. this morning the biggest scandal in the history of the secret service is getting bigger. 11 agents had top level security clearance pull more are now under investigation after allegations of binge drinking and soliciting prostitutes in colombia. military officials now suspect 10 or more of their own members may also have been soliciting sex from prostitutes. >> if the violations are determined to have been the case these individuals will be held accountable.

disturbing call last night about an attempted kidnapping of a student. amy hollyfield is live in concord with more on the story. >> reporter: it was an attempted kidnapping, not a successful one, because the girl did the right thing. she did not get in the car with the man. the 7th grader was walking to her middle school yesterday morning, eldorado middle school, she says a man in a beige van pull up and asked her to get in. parents heard about this in an automated call from the district. the man is described as being bald, in his 30s, heavyset with a black mustache and goatee, possibly of polynesian dee isn't. the purpose of this call is to ask you to -- remind your children not to speak with strangers going to and from school. >> reporter: the girl kept saying no to the man and did not get in that car she made it to school safely and is now

now. >> we do. happening right now space shuttle discovery is about to land at its final home, smithsonian institution hangar outside of washington. you are looking at live pictures of dulles airport. discovery left florida two hours ago aboard a modified jumbo jet for a low altitude farewell flight over cape canaveral. moments ago they were showing pictures with of what looked like the 737 bearing the shuttle coming in for its landing. they will do a similar fly-over, over the national mall in washington and the capital. and that do the in the middle of the screen -- and that don in the middle of the screen, we believe that is the 747 carrying the discovery in addition to being the oldest space shuttle it did the most missions in lower earth orbit, 39 missions over 30 years. yeah, as it is coming into focus, you can see there's a big jet with a smaller

must go through to familiarize themselves with the caltrain operations. residents will notice an increase in train activity and horn noise as well as more crossing gates being down. 6:53. recapping, new leads have been discovered in the case of missing morgan hill teenager sierra lamar. >> terry mcsweeney is live in santa clara county with details. >> reporter: investigators are saying that these new leads come as a result of crime lab analysis of evidence found so far. they are not going into detail. crime lab analysis, among other things dna, trace evidence as they look for a suspect. look at where investigators were yesterday, looking in ponds less than a mile from sierra's house. the house where she was last seen march 16th, she never did make it to the school bus that morning. her phone, bag found fear by the next couple of days after

the disappearance, no sign of her. the new leads may or may not have come from crime lab reports of those specific items. hundreds of balloons were released carrying messages of hope for the safe return of sierra. the search for sierra will resume in those same ponds today and for the rest of the week. investigators have checked those ponds before. now they are using more sophisticated scanning techniques to better see what might be at the bottom of that water that's the story from here. the other top story of the morning comes from amy hollyfield in concord. a story along the same lines as this one, not related, but with a different outcome. >> reporter: a better one, yes. we are in concord where a man tried to kidnap a little girl. he was not successful. she was on her way to school yesterday morning she was walking along glacier drive on her way to eldorado middle school, a man in a beige van

asked her to get in. she said no. several times. and she did make it to a safe place. the school district sent out an automated call telling parents what happened and describing the man as being in his 30s, possibly of polynesian descent they say he's heavy-set with a mustache and goatee. school officials are encouraging parent to talk to their kids about stranger-danger not to talk to strangers not to get in the car with anyone they don't know. having that conversation is a good reminder for all of us parents all over the bay area something to talk about maybe on the way to school this morning. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. 6:55. final check own weather and traffic. mild, you can see -- [ unintelligible ]
