members of the oakland police department met with residents of west and north oakland tonight to talk about what they are doing to fight crime. lillian kim is aleif at the oak land police department with more. lillian? >> for the past two years officers here at the oakland police department have had to did more with less but based on what we heard tonight they say to be dealing witness as best they can. >> this is where we ask for help. >>reporter: in the every day the top brass of the oakland police department comes to the neighborhood which 80's tanya made a point to show up tonigh tonight. to find out is what really going on. >> i'm getting these reports that there's been robbery with weapons and that makes me feel unsafe. that makes me feel more cautious. >>reporter: about 100 other people showed up at the very center to get answers too. occurrence out -- turns outs out they saw a spike in robbery at the beginning of the year. >> robbery 49 percent. burglaries 39 percent up. bear

with me open this. >>reporter: oakland police say while the numbers may sound alarming the situation is getting better and credit relatively new computer software that keeps track of when and where crime is 0you are occurring. >> i can see where the trends occurring, cluster occurring, i can go really far into it. >> this allows us to use officers extra teencly throughout the city to address crime. so intelligence base police. >>reporter: oakland mayor kwan spoke as well touting 100 block initiative putting more police resources on the block where most of the crime takes place. >> what we are trying to do is try some things. the be smart about it and see if it makes a difference. >>reporter: resident appreciate the effort but what they really want is for staffing level to go back to where they were two years ago. currently 6 51 officers before budget cut 803. >> i feel in more confident in the method they are using. i still think the department is under staffed.

>> i'm trying to share the chief mayor optimism that better policing better toll technology better data get a handle on it but not enough cops. >>reporter: mayor kwan has advocated a parcel tax that would pay for more officers. but the idea is proven unpopular. such a tax would require a two third majority from voters. live in oakland, abc 7 news. thanks. uc berkeley student out on bail tonight after being accused of peeping on women in dorm bathroom. of win lee arrested early this week accused of spying on 18-year-old woman shouing in co-ed restroom. victim says she saw someone pointing an i-phone at her in the shower. witnesses saw lee running away from the bathroom after she screamed. there have been several peeping incident on campus if recent months. lee has not been implicated in any other cases. >> santa rosa police look for team who disappeared after bike ride over the weekend. 15-year-old charlotte mulnar i
