a short time ago the man accused of killing an unarmed teen in florida was released from jail. george zimmerman walked out of seminole county jail tonight. he was released on $150,000 bail. >> zimmerman is facing second-degree murder charges in the shooting death of unarmed teenager trayvon martin. during friday's bond hearing a judge said he could leave the state for his own safety, but laid down several conditions including being monitored by police. >> and back in the bay area, students are returning to class tomorrow. it has been three weeks since seven people were shot to death at a small christian college in oakland. lilian kim is live where they are preparing for a very

sensitive day. lilian? >> reporter: the president was here this afternoon. he didn't want to go on camera, but off camera the decision to reopen the school was rooted in its christian values. that the school must overcome. it it has been nearly three weeks since they were shot and killed. the people who have no affiliation with the school continue to stop by. this couple from san francisco was in the area and came to pay their respects. >> i just made it through the area, and when i first heard the story, it just touched our heart. the fact that these people were here, and trying to get a degree. >> classes will resume on monday and most of the 150 students plan to return. the bullet holes have been filled and nearly every door has been replaced. nursing students will be spared from returning to the scene of a shooting and those classes will be returned to fremont. the suspected it gunman was a former nursing student and most of the shooting victims

were in the nursing program. abc7 spoke to her. they are still recovering from a gunshot wound near her hell bow, but she has every intention of going to class on monday. she told us over the phone, we have to move on with our lives. we will always remember the ones who are part of our class and will graduate and pass the state exam just for them. these women from oakland were happy to here that classes are starting up again. they also were in the area and came by to see this side of the shooting for themselves. >> the school can't stay closed. they have students who want to finish whatever they started. it can't stay closed. >> there was one classroom where most of the students died. we are told that will remain unused indefinitely. lilian kim, abc7 news. >> thank you, lilian. and the school has set up a memorial fund for the victims and their families. we have a link on our site. go to abc7news.com under see

it on tv. we will have full coverage on the school's reopening tomorrow on abc7 news. it was land used for agricultural research, but it is now slated for development. uc berkeley owns the land located in albany, but tonight it is home to occupiers. thomas roman is live with why the occupiers are camping out. >> uc police gave the occupiers until 10:00 to clear off the land, but they are still here. the group is calling themselves occupy the farm. and they timed this action to coincide with today being earth day. 5* couple of dozen occupiers are m cay ped out on the land -- are camped out on the land. they want to keep priss teen and agricultural while uc berkeley plans to develop the property. they came with shovels and picks and a roto tiller. they are called occupy the farm. they broke is down to a 10-acre plot of land in albany

near the border. about 100 occupiers immediately started tilling the soil and planting seeds. the land was used as an agricultural research project, but now the uc plants developed a property. this group of occupiers made of students, residents and activists want the area transformed to an urban farm and used for hands on education. the group claims to have planted some 15,000 seedlings to begin the transformation. neither have returned calls regarding what they plan to do about these occupiers. now back here live, so far we haven't been able to talk to the occupiers. it is private property, and none have come out to tell us what their plans are. we do know they planned to stay overnight. how far in the future they plan on staying is sill stile a mystery to us -- is still a mystery to us. abc7 news. >> thank you, thomas. one person is in the hospital after being burned when a fire raced through an

apartment in campbell. it broke out around 11 ooflt 40 this morning in a -- 11:40 this morning in a four plex. firefighters suspect a pot of grease sparked the fire. the flames spread from the ground floor to the attic. >> the common attic and a lot of a uh tbres sigh fire fighting went on. you can seat number two unit was the only one lost. >> they got some help from the san jose fire department. the red cross is assisting several people who were displaced by that fire. the sheriff will face a commission who will look at how to proceed with the case. the commission will then submit a recommendation to the board of supervisors who will take a vote on whether to remove him from office. he will be charged on unofficial charges.

>> former presidential candidate john edwards goes on trial tomorrow for a high profile scandal to derail the personal and political life. he is accused of using illegal campaign funds to cover an affair. bob woodruff has more. >> how are you feeling? >> the case is sure to be one of the most scandalous political trials in years. on the witness list, the candidate's mistress, rielle hunter, the mother of edwards' four-year-old daughter. and also set to testify kate edwards. kate has been standing by her father since he was arrested last june. >> how do you feel today? >> prosecutors say the case is simple of the edwards is so determined to hide his relationship with hunter -- >> the story is false. it is untrue and ridiculous. >> and so intent on keeping his campaign going, even after hunter got pregnant he solicited hundreds of

thousands of dollars in illegal campaign cash to cover up the affair. it is a high stakes prill trial that could -- criminal trial that could send edwards to prison for 30 years. edwards' lawyers called the case crazy and radical. the payments were gifts that had nothing to do with the election. >> i didn't violate campaign laws and i never for a second believed i was violating the campaign laws. >> edwards never touched the money, his lawyers say, and he will argue that he was trying to hide from his wife and not the voters. the key witness once so loyal he publicly claimed to be the father of hunter's child. young says edwards was in on the plan every step of the way. >> he knew about the money. he knew about the methodology and the sources. >> they say young has a vendetta against his former boss and he can prove young siphoned thousands of dollars and spent it on himself. >> they are going after his credibility to why he is

saying this, why he is doing this and how effective the defense is in cross-examination of andrew young could make or break this case. >> abc's bob woodruff reporting. edwards' defense attorney claims most of the money in question came from a 101-year-old heiress from virginia. the woman offered the under the table cash to edwards to cover his personal expenses of the. a new report says the media picked mitt romney as the presidential nominee long before voters did. the report is from the research center analyzing tone and content between january and mid-april. the report concluded that the media conceded to romney after he won the michigan primary. that was in late february. president obama will crunch the nomination on tuesday when five states vote. president obama had no opposition in a race very few people even knew was happening. arizona police say they found something suspicious while searching for a missing

a loud noise and bright light in the sky is from a meteor smash nooght sierra. people reported a sonic boom that rattled windows across several counties. the boom came from debris cloud left by the comet thatcher during the annual fly by. >> my dogs even jumped. they were looking around like, what the heck was that? >> twos a bright green -- it was a bright green flash with a tale on it.

dries warmer. it has definitely changed around here in the bay area. we have patchy fog moving in and drizzle along the coast. it is going to be cloudy tomorrow and cooler for everybody except for right along the coast where we dropped today in terms of temperatures. and then rain midweek. here is the satellite imagery, and it is going to move south and increase the on shore flow and with that marine layer moving in and the winds pushing the clouds and fog in, we are going to see cooler temperatures and more fog as well in the morning. here is a look at the forecast model which is even some possible drizzle along the coast and parts of the north bay. a lot of cloud cover for the morning commute. and then the clouds stay with us off and on tuesday into wednesday. that's when we see the rain develop wednesday afternoon to wednesday night and through thursday that's the latest forecast for the timing of the storm. and we will keep you posted on that.

in washington, abc news. hundreds of people came out to help the san bruno neighborhood devastated by the pipeline a few years ago. sergio has a story of how a young boy is making a difference. >> among the caution tape the house is being rebuilt and the flowers on the chain link fence are marking where a gas-fed fire tore through this neighborhood. on this sunday there are lemon trees and wrapped bulbs waiting to be planted. >> today we are reconnecting the neighborhood that were lost in the san bruno fire in 2010. >> for those who lived through the terrible fire that burned through here when a pg&e gas line exploded more than a year and a half ago, this is a welcome day to replant and rebuild. >> very heart felt thanks from us and from our neighbors. >> patty beelike -- patty blick and her husband steve

greenery was planted here in san bruno. abc7 news. >> people celebrated earth day across the bay area and around the country. thousands packed the civic center to share ways to protect the environment. the vendors did their own peddling offering plenty to eat, drink and wear. chicago just received a $20,000 grant to plant trees across the windy city. a new type of light bulb went on sale, and it may cut your electric bill significantly. but there is a tradeoff. it is the price tag. this bulb costs $50. the bulb burns 10 watts of electricity in order to produce the same amount of light as a 60 watt incandescent.
