mirkarimi tried to resolve this in the courtroom, that didn't go his way. now fight for his job moves to city hall. ross mirkarimi's hearing will begin today for the ethics commission. today there won't be any testimony, instead the attorneys will meet and will work on the process. they will decide how the hearing will the executive director is hoping for a drama-free hearing. the plan right now is for this to be argued mostly in briefs not with many witnesses. they will be talking that and who will need to give testimony and when later. that will be part of the discussion today this is not expected to be a fast process it could take several weeks. this commission doesn't have much power. it will make a recommendation to the board of supervisors. the supervisors will decide if mirkarimi should keep his job as sheriff. he was suspended last month after entering a guilty plea

to a domestic violence-related charge. mr. mirkarimi was surprised and upset by the suspension, suspended without pay. he tried to get the court to throw it out, that didn't happen. now, the procedure will make its way through city hall. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. 6:04 now. the highway patrol is investigating an early morning hit-and-run crash in oakland. it left a car burning northbound i-880. the accident happened before 3:00 this morning near 7th street. the driver of the car that burned got out with minor injuries. crews will be out this morning working to repair the guardrail. classes resume today for oikos university students less than a machine after six colleagues -- than a month after six colleagueses and receptionists were shot to death. they will hold classes in fremont.

a lot of people have been stopping by to give support. katie marzullo will have a live update at 6:30. police are looking for a prowler who tried to break into a home in a normally quiet north bay neighborhood. sausalito police say a man tried to enter a home through an unlocked backdoor a neighbor confronted the man and he ran. authorities from a number of neighboring agencies searched the area with a police dog but did not locate the prowler. this week a salvage crew will try to recover the yacht grounded on the farallon islands. special care will need to be taken to remove it from the wildlife refuge. flotilla of 100 boats paid tribute. 6:05.

senate homeland security chair will send questions and hold hearings to determine if the prostitution scandal was isolated. we are learning a female secret service chief is being credited with containing the scandal. paula reed was recently promoted to boss for the miami field office and all of south america she was in colombia when she heard about a prostitute complaining she had not been paid. quickly she notified washington and rounded up 11 agents and sent them home before president obama arrived. >> i can help but wonder if there had been more women as part of that detail, if this would have happened? >> six of the 11 agents have been forced out in the wake of the scandal. there are reports this morning that a 12th agent has been suspended. more agents are expected to

golden gate bridge bay protesters. today the examiner reports it could coincide with plans by union toll takers to possibly go on strike over changes to their retirement and health care plans. if any of the unions in the golden gate bridge coalition opt to strike the occupy movement says they would spring into action, blocking traffic on the bridge. >> the federal government is investigating 5,000 school buses that could have mechanical defects. the probe focuses on 2008 models. there have been three reports of buses stalling because of a problem with the fuel injection system. the stalls have not caused accident or injuries. the manufacturer says it is cooperating with investigators. new document indicates back in 1989, pg&e weld defects on the same pipeline that caused the deadly san bruno explosion. the memo describes a leak about nine miles south of where the disaster happened. the chronicle reports the document was turned in last

accident westbound 80 approaching powell off to the shoulder. traffic spotters telling us the traffic is very slow heading through the area. we are hearing it is just moving at 10 miles per hour. we'll move on to the rest of the commute. bay bridge dive, 15 minute delays at the pay gates. -- >> 6:31 we have developing news in oakland, search underway for a woman who tried to hold-up a convenience store at gunpoint last night that attempt was foiled by a hero. police say before 10:00 the driver of a gasoline delivery truck saw what was happening inside this store. they say a woman was pointing a gun at the clerk and making threats to shoot him if he didn't hand over the money. the truck driver grabbed the woman and the struggle for the gun was on. >> an employee in fear of safety of his fellow co-workers was able to wrestle the gun away from the suspect.

the suspect then fled on foot without any loss or anybody getting hurt. >> another customer in the store said he was very thankful for the bravery of that truck driver. this morning the oakland university that was the scene of a massacre will hold classes for the first time since the tragedy three weeks ago. katie marzullo is live at oikos university with the preparations and emotions. >> reporter: the emotions will be raw, no question. they may intensify as students arrive. the memorial has grown on the front steps, it is touching besides the flowers with there are teddy bears and hand -- there are teddy bears and handwritten notes. not all students are returning some have said they cannot return to this university.

the classroom where the majority of the shootings took place will not be use tad will stay closed indefinitely. the nursing program, the hardest hit, the six students killed from the nursing program, the 7th victim the receptionist. because of that the nursing program has been moved, it is going to take place in fremont. one of the survivors told us over the phone yesterday she could never return to this oakland campus but she wants to pass her state exam in honor of the victims. the kpaopby is rooting for the school and students -- the community is rooting for the school and students. >> this was the area, when i first her the story, it just touched our heart, the fact these people were here trying to get a degree itch >> the school can't stay closed. -- they have students that want to finish what they started. it can't stay closed.

>> reporter: the suspected shooter one goh also a nursing student he dropped out of the university and might have been involved in a dispute with administrators over getting his tuition back. he's charged with seven murders and several attempted murders. the president of the university has told us his decision to reopen the university is based in christianity this is a small christian college. he says students and the school must overcome. katie marzullo, abc7 news. suspended san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi faces his first hearing before the ethics commission today. the commission will decide now to proceed with his case. no testimony is expected today. oral arguments are not to begin for several weeks. friday judge rejected mirkarimi's request to overturn his suspension on official misconduct charges. mirkarimi was suspended after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge in a domestic violence case involving his wife. the ethics commission will

submit a recommendation to the board of supervisors which will vote on whether to remove him from office. right now a group calling itself occupy the farm is camped out in al ban in yesterday for earth day they took over a 10 acre plot of land that uc berkeley owns and plans to develop they broke into a locked gate and beganning the soil and planting seeds. the occupiers say they want to see it transformed into an urban farm. so far, university police have declared it a crime scene and say occupiers are subject to arrest. there have been no confrontations with police. :35. the florida neighborhood watch volunteer charged with second degree murder in the death of and you armed teenager is at a secret location after being let out jail overnight. george zimmerman posted a $1 -- posted $150,000 and left in

-- we've got an answer to a mystery loud noise and bright light in the sky yesterday morning was likely caused by a meteor smashing into the sierra. people reported hearing the sonic boom that rattled windows. scientists say the boom came from a debris cloud left the comet during its annual fly by. >> my dogs jumped. >> it was just a bright green flash with a tail on it. it looks metallic, sort of reflective-like as it shot across the sky. >> the meteor shower caused by the comet is at its peak and most visible in the northern hemisphere. we've been talking that nor'easter they are experiencing back east bringing heavy rain and snow to some places. up to four inches of rain expected today from philadelphia up to new york city and into southern new england. higher elevations in west

attorneys will argue whether he violated federal campaign laws he pleaded not guilty to six counts related to nearly a million dollars. during his 2008 campaign he's accused of using funds to cover-up his affair with a mistress who became pregnant with his now 4-year-old daughter. the trial is expected to last six weeks. president obama is paying his respects to holocaust remembrance day at the u.s. holocaust memorial in washington, d.c.. he's being introduced at the memorial by holocaust survivor and nobel peace prize winner elie wiesel. during the ceremony mr. obama is expected to unveil new plans to issue sanctions against foreign enemies. the post reports the sanctions will punish countries like libya and egypt who used social media to track down on
