this disease is not carried in the milk or even the beef. >> reassurances that the food supply is safe. >> it follows a report that a dairy cow has tested positive for mad cow disease in california. >> i'm carolyn johnson. 245* discovery is having international implications. two major retailers in south korea have halted sales of u.s. beef. it follows the positive test results of a dairy cow located in the central valley. abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian is live with the latest developments. lisa? >> mad cow disease affects the

brain and there is no cure. the carcass is still in quarantine, and the usda is trying to figure out what to do next. it is the first confirmed case of mad cow disease in the u.s. since 2006. the dairy cow was isolated and tested at the baker commodities rendering facility in han ford. that is about 30 miles from fresno. the usda posted a statement insisting the cow did not eat contaminated feed, and that it was simply a random mutation. >> our laboratory confirmed the findings and said it was an atypical form of the disease which is a rare form of the disease. >> should people be worried about getting mad cow disease? >> no, they shouldn't. >> the dairy cow in question did not enter the food chain. mad cow disease cannot be passed along through milk. >> we are actually seriously concerned about the new case. >> i spoke with the west coast

director of consumer reports via skype. she worries not enough cows are tested. >> there are likely to be lots of other cows out there if they were looking harder. >> alicia says 40,000 cows are tested. still mad cow disease is extremely rare which may not matter in the public arena. the market dropped after today's findings and the industry plunged in the wake of the 2003 mad cow disease incident. >> the biggest thing was trade. that affects our price because one of our biggest things is trade with other countries and trade that they will get something. >> they had mixed reactions to the latest case. >> i worry about it in general. >> if there are more incidents, i might get a little concerned.

>> there have been three reported human cases of mad cow in the united states. all are believed to have been exposed to the disease outside of the u.s. live in san jose tonight, lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. >> thanks. and in a joint statement tonight, senators dianne feinstein and barbara boxer say they are following this closely and will work with the usda and the state of california to ensure that all precautions have been taken. police are searching for the drive by gunman who sprayed a duplex with bullets. the shots were fired from a car that hit a second floor apartment near constitution. the crime scene investigators recovered at least 15 spent shells. no one was hit. there is no word on a motive. ?ai no final answer for -- no final answer for people in a san bruno neighborhood. so they will now have to wait to find out what will happen

to the pipeline buried under their street. john alston is live in san bruno where they wanted answers from pg&e. >> dan, just knowing that the pipeline is there has been troubling to a number of residents. they tried to balance the emotional trauma of neighbors with the desire to deal with the pipeline with as little disruption as possible. the small section of transmission line that exploded is long gone. but underneath glen view drive there are several thousand feet of pipeline empty, capped off and no longer in use. tonight neighbors had one desire. >> my concern is we have a clear, written commitment that they will never use the pipeline again for the natural gas service. >> the san bruno residents heard three options for dealing with the remaining pipe. dig it all up which would take four months and cause major road closures. pump it full of slur rewhich would only take a few weeks or a hybrid plan to dig up a

small section and fill the rest with cement. neighbors didn't want the roads and sidewalks torn up. >> the construction is enough and it is disruptive to the neighborhood. i saw them when they tore a piece of pipe out. >> ed who is about to move back into his home wants the pipe plugged and left there. >> it is a bad memory. a lot of people don't see that pipe. just leave it like it is. >> residents expressed concern that the option would flush natural gas odors into the air. it is a troubling prospect considering what they have been through. >> all of the gas is coming out of the air. >> in the end, the council decided to wait and survey residents who will be most affected. although the mayor made clear his preference. >> i think we fill this thing and get it done. it will never be used again. we have those assurances and

it won't be filled with concrete. i just want to get it done. >> a city staff report recommended the hybrid version of digging up a small portion. the city wants to survey some residents, and it will also hear more from pg&e as to what the utility will do to prevent a gas odor. it will use shareholder money to do whatever the city decides it wants to do. abc7 news. >> thanks, john. police are searching for the driver of a white pick up truck seen driving away after a teenager was shot and wounded in union city. the shooting forced them to lock down two schools near the crime scene. the 15-year-old victim is a student at one of them, james logan high school. but the campus was never threatened. there is no word on a motive for the shooting. the student is in serious condition. mayor gene quan's plan suffered a setback.

that's after police admit they are moving several officers out of a high crime area. the plan focuses on the city's 100 most violent blocks. you can see them designated in red. alan wang is live. alan, she has a problem. >> yes, the 100 block initiative is mayor quan's innovative plan she rolled outlast fall, but tonight she was in damage colling troll mode trying to -- damage control mode and trying to assure that it still works. >> mayor gene quan and the police chief sat shoulder to shoulder at a press conference held to reassure the public her 100 block initiative is still working. >> it is based on taking the resources we have and focusing them in a smart way. >> a report that 22 police positions are being reassigned from the area raised concerns among residents in parts of east and west oakland at a public safety meeting tonight. in just the last 24 hours four people were shot there

including a man who was wounded on peralta street. 90% of the city's murders take place in the 100-block area. >> we have seen years of neglect. >> quan says 25 new officers will be assigned to middle schools there by june. but she says the program works because of a combination of social services and a job recruitment program. >> you ask me if the plan is going to work, no, it is not going to work. >> larry reid says the city needs 1200 officers. it only has 653. chief jordan says crime is down in the 100 block zone, but added that overall crime in the city is up 21%. >> what we saw is it didn't move too far. i am talking about crime moving and i am really talking about shootings, the robberies and the murders. they moved literally within a block or two away from each other.

>> and it will be difficult to maintain the mayor's plan. but he is willing to tap the bart and highway patrol to fill the gap in the 100 block zone. alan wang, abc7 news. a crew member who survived the deadly sailboat accident is revealing new details about what happened. a salvage crew moved the boat from half moon bay airport. the boat overturned in the rough sees during a race a week and a half ago. he was a guest crew member. there was a letter that said, quote, the last thing i see is the boat tipping toward vertical. a single thought races toward my head. this is going to be bad. he says it was the scariest15 minutes of his life. some wells fargo shareholders got caught up in a protest outside their meeting in san francisco today

police trying to keep people out of the wells fargo meeting kept out several stockholders. the spokesman says there wasn't enough room. 15 who got inside were arrested along with six more who chained themselves to a barricade. 134* shareholders wanted to let board members know they are out of touch. >> what i have lost wouldn't buy a case of wine in their cellers. that's how bad it is. >> wells fargo issued a statement saying it respects the right of americans who peacefully assemble, and the focus was the safety of customers and team members. five more wins for mitt romney. >> and tonight i can say thank you, america. >> the gop candidate for president making what sounded like an accentance speech. >> and a secret service agent says this is not the first time agents have behaved badly. >> and the piece of ingredient that could help fight cancer.

after 43 primaries and caucuses, mitt romney has all but sealed the deal tonight. he won primaries in connecticut, delaware, pennsylvania, rhode island and new york today. in a victory speech in new hampshire romney said a better america begins tonight. >> the last few years were the best barack obama can do. but it is not the best america can do. tonight is the beginning of the end of the disappointments of the obama years. >> with today's victory he has 824 delegates. that's 320 shy of the number he needs to win the republican nomination. former presidential candidate rick santorum says he plans to endorse romney. the prostitution scandal may not be the first time agents have behaved badly. an agent not linked to the

scandal tells the washington post that this has happened before. the secret service personnel say they should not have been dismissed and they went public with past stories of prostitutes and strip clubs. nine employees are no longer with the agency after an investigation that they caw voterred with the prostitutes before the uh -- arrival of the president. the safety commission approved a bill for people who are not doctors to perform early term abortions. they say it fills a growing need for abortion providers. it allows nurse practitioners, midwifes and physician assistants to terminate pregnancies in the first trimester. right now only doctors can do that. critics call it a risky decision. >> women deserve the best of medical care when undergoing an invasive surgical procedure by a doctor who can handle complications and a doctor

with hospital privileges. >> the expanded abortion bill faces another committee hearing and stiff opposition before it can be considered by the full legislature. health officials say six teens have showed up in an emergency room with alcohol poisoning after drinking liquid happened san sanitizer. they have figured out a way to separate it from the other ingredients leaving what remains a shot of hard liquor. drinking enough of the cleaner could cause serious illness and even death. here is something we can assume is good for you. a seasoning that is used in pizza and pasta may be a powerful weapon against prostate cancer. researchers of long island university studied the primary chemical that makes up ar re gano. when it was added to the cells it triggered the cells into committing suicide. it is not clier how it does this or -- it is not clear how it does this or why. eating the pizza may cut down the cancer risk.

bay area. we have clouds on different levels. temperatures are being held up by the cloud cover. we have the 50s and 60s at this hour. the showers will be delayed until tomorrow evening. the showers are expected on thursday. dry and warmer conditions as we head into the weekend. here is a look at the satellite and the radar. th is a system that has been sending a lot of cloud cover our way. this will be late on wednesday. as we head into your thursday, this system out of the gulf of alaska will bring us some more wet weather. it is not going to amount to a whole lot, but you certainly need the wipers and the umbrellas. it is really a nice looking day. the clouds will increase as the low starts to move toward southern california. scattered white showers tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. and then we will continue to see a few showers through the night and then heading into 5:00 a.m. on thursday. we still have some wet pavement for the morning commute. so just be aware of this. this is the second system that

will bring us some more showers on thursday morning and heading into early thursday afternoon. and then it pretty much winds down. when all is said and done the rainfall tote will tays were not impressive. .05 to a quarter of an inch expected thursday night. in the sierra nevada they are expecting snow. it is about 9,000 feet and lowering to 6,000, about 6,000 foot elevation. certainly count on on the gusty winds making travel treacherous. just so you know, the average april snowfall for south lake tahoe is seven inches. it is not all that unheard of to see snow in the sierra nevada. yes, it is late. tomorrow morning another cloudy start, midto upper 50s. really mild to start things off. tomorrow afternoon it is another mild day under partly cloudy conditions. we will go with low 60s to the low 70s in the inland east bay and the south bay. around the monterey bay, temperature of 66 in santa cruz and 70 in hollister. here is your accu-weather seven-day forecast. cooler the next couple days.

you just heard the president say "you got me." a young woman apologized after accidentally spilling yogurt on the president's pants as he mingled outside a bar in boulder. the president told the woman, well, now you have a story to tell. later he spoke to the university of colorado presumably in a fresh pair of pants. >> can you imagine what that young woman told her parents what she did at college today? spilled yogurt on the president. >> and then she was tased. no, that didn't happen. she was fine. in sports, shot of the night at warriors game. it happened again. how much was this hoop worth? sports is next.

he was coming off the score less battle and he didn't have the same control. latos struggled with the reds. it is seven score less and struck out ludwig. leading off the seventh with a bomb off cane and the reds erupt late cruising 9-2. the a's and white sox and ricky henderson knew a thing or two about stealing bases. strike him out, throw him out. it is a pitcher's dual, and they are matching the long and struck out five. kurt suzuki and maui boy on the line. he scores all the way from first and a's get another round and a shutout chicago 2-0. with two games left in the season, the warriors had the eighth worst record in the league. they need to be seventh worst to keep their lottery pick. so losing is really winning.
