disease discovered at a dairy farm here in california. despite assurances that golden state beef is safe, one country has stopped imports. >> reporter: we are learning that south korea is halting u.s. beef imports and two retailers there have stopped selling it. the food supply is safe. it was a dairy cow found at a processing plant outside of fresno so its meat was never headed to market. also you cannot get mad cow disease from milk. and the cow did not get the disease from contaminated feed the animal had a random mutation. >> our laboratory confirmed the findings and also indicated it was an atypical form of bse which is a rare form. >> usda has not completed their investigation. we'll watch carefully to see

what they find. if it turns out we have tainted feed, we will have a larger problem. >> reporter: this is the first case of mad cow in the u.s. since 2006. and the fourth case ever. the disease is fatal in cattle and can cause a rare but deadly brain condition in humans. on our website we posted a list of questions and answers if you would like to read in more detail about mad cow disease you can do so at abc7news.com. katie marzullo, abc7 news. new this morning, right now san francisco police are investigating a shooting that left a man clinging to life. it happened in the ocean view neighborhood at 8:45 last night. police say a 47-year-old man was shot near plymouth and fair lawn he was taken to the hospital. no word on his identity or suspects. anyone with information should call the san francisco police

department. major development in that fatal crash between a bicyclist and pedestrian that has gripped san francisco. there's word serious criminal charges may be filed any moment in light of new evidence. amy hollyfield is live at the accident scene at castro and market. >> reporter: this is big news on two fronts: one, that the district attorney has made a decision. secondly, that it looks like it is going to be a felony case not a misdemeanor. people have been waiting to hear something about this case. this happened last month on march 29th, there had been complaints people felt like it was taking too long. some have been calling for a severe charge of the it appears they are going to get it. the district attorney is preparing to file a felony vehicular manslaughter charge. 35-year-old riding his bike through the intersection of

castro and market when he hit a 71-year-old pedestrian in the crosswalk. a source inside the district attorney's office tells the newspaper that the evidence is strong that they have a motorist who saw him flying through several red lights and stop signs before the collision. they have a tracker on his bike that shows he was riding faster than 35 miles per hour in a 25 mile per hour zone and they have video they say shows him hunched over and speeding and making no attempt to stop. what they won't be using is an internet posting that he made after the wreck. he admits he plowed through the intersection, a crowded crosswalk. police tell the paper it would be tough to prove that he wrote the posting. if someone is convicted it is punishable by up to 16 months in jail. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. what could be a life or

death struggle to save a gray whale gets underway this morning off the coast of monterey county. we've been following the plight of this whale more than a week. he's tangled in a fishing net. first spotted off laguna beach in orange county, rescuers were able to partially disentangle the net but couldn't find him when they went to finish the job. members of a whale management team plan to launch two boats to try to free that whale once and for all. san bruno school officials are meeting with parents tonight to consider closing two schools budget cuts and declining enrollment are the factors in the decision. crestmoor is located near the site of the deadly september 2010 pipeline explosion and fire. the superintendent says the 213 students there would be relocated to other neighborhood schools. parents say the closures will

hurt a community still trying to recover from that disaster. the residents living in that san bruno neighborhood will have to wait longer to find out what is going to happen to the pipeline under their city. several thousand feet of line remain unused underground. last night city staff recommended digging up some and filling the rest with concrete. many residents spoke out against the digging which would cause months of road closures. >> it will never be used again. we have those assurances it won't be filled with concrete. i just want to get it done. >> council decided to survey residents closest to the line before making a final decision. pg&e says it will pay for whatever the city decides to do. a few hours from now the u.s. supreme court is set to hear oral arguments on arizona controversial crackdown on illegal immigrants.

the law requires authorities to check immigration status of anyone arrested, stopped or detained if they suspect that person may be an illegal immigrant. the obama administration challenged the law soon after arizona governor brewer approved it in 2010 arguing states have a limited role in immigration policy. the supreme court will explore whether lower courts were right to block key provisions of the law five other states passed similar measures also on hold/> what about your afternoon. here's live doppler some of those sprinkles that could be around during the morning very isolated, blue usually means it is not reaching the ground. sweetwater, springs road, coleman valley road, occidental road are some areas that could be getting a few

a crew member who survived that deadly sailboat racing accident off the farallon islands is revealing new details. this morning the vessel is at an undisclosed location. a crew move the low speed chase from half moon bay airport yesterday. the boat overturned in rough seas during a race a week and a half ago. brian chong was a guest crewmember. he described the terror he felt as he saw a huge wave. he says the last thing i see is the boat tipping toward vertical, a single thought races through my head this is going to be bad. he was thrown from the vessel when the wave hit. he was able to swim to the island. two others survived. five were killed. big pharmacy chain is being drawn into the legal battle over the huge 2007 cosco busan oil spill into san francisco bay. the owners of the ship are suing the store for dispensing

snow level 9,000 feet today dropping to about 6,000 feet with the next system tomorrow. best chance of rain around santa barbara to san diego, temperatures around 70 there. you can see light rain lingering temperatures upper 40s in cloverdale, santa rosa, santa cruz, low to mid 50s cooler tomorrow but still mild with that rain overnight. low sinking farther to the south and it is slowing that's why we'll have light showers late today with the best chance of the rain in southern california. next system thursday has a better chance of pushing through the bay area and bringing showers and a chance of a thunderstorm. as far as timing, 7:00 this morning, few sprinkles, mostly cloudy, waves of clouds rolling in stray shower or two around the lunch hour through 4:00. better chance of the showers, especially south bay and east bay by 6:00 this evening hanging around through
