no rain and no major problems on the road. this is a live shot off the bay bridge into downtown san francisco, no problems at the toll everything is light, metering lights off. a problem heading out of town towards the sacramento area by uc davis. a gravel spill, not good for the windshield, all lanes and cleanup crews are headed there eastbound 80 at the uc davis exit, gravel in all lanes. you may want to take it easy through that area until they get that cleaned up. a whale of a rescue attempt when the sunrises this morning biologists will try to free the gray whale caught in a net first spotted off the southern california coast last week is now nearly to monterey. terry mcsweeney is live along the pacific coast. >> reporter: starting at shortly after sunrise this morning they will be going back out again trying to spot june the gray whale, spotted

coming into monterey county yesterday morning, could easily be in santa cruz county by now. this whale was first spotted last tuesday. take a look at video from last tuesday. this whale was spotted off laguna beach in southern california this is not fishing line like many of us go fishing with this is crab pot line very thick, impacting the whale's ability to eat. three buoys were attached to that whale last tuesday. a whale at sea is still very difficult to find. rescue groups lost the whale, until yesterday morning. rescue groups found her coming into monterey county. today a group call the california wail entanglement team, which responded to this -- kind of predicament is going out. the group is going to hug the coast looking for june the

whale. coast guard is on standby if the whale is spotted it will set up a 200 yard perimeter around that whale for safety. the biggest issue in getting this thick crab pot line cut off of this whale is the whale itself. the whale has an incredibly strong tail and it can be deadly for rescuers trying to cut that line she has no idea they are trying to help so there's danger for the humans and certainly a danger for that whale. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. we are following developing news from sonoma county where this morning deputies and chp will try to recover a body found yesterday in the waters off bodega bay. sheriff's department contacted 7 p.m. requesting a helicopter to help recover a bed from the water. officials won't say if the body is that of a man or -- man or woman they've posted

deputies in the area and plan to attempt again after sunrise. in oakland the mayor's crime fighting plan has suffered a setback after police admit they are moving extra officers out of so-called high crime areas. the plan focuses more resources on the 100 most violent blocks. the mayor says 90% of the city's murders take place within those areas. yesterday there were reports that officers were put back in other areas of the city. the chief tried to reassure people that the 100 block initiative is still working and officers are just spreading out. >> we saw it didn't move too far, i'm talking about the shootings, robberies and murders, they moved within a block or two away from each other. >> based on taking resources we have and focusing them in a smart way. >> chief jordan says crime is down in the 100 block zone. but noted overall crime in the city is up 21%.

critics of the 100 block-plan say there weren't enough officers to cover the initiative and protect other areas of the city. the city has 653 officers, some estimate that the city should have 1200. police are searching for the drive-by gunman who sprayed an apartment complex in alameda with bullets yesterday. witnesses say somebody called out a name then started firing. the shots hit a second floor apartment. crime scene investigators recovered at least 15 spent shells. bullet holes pockmarked the building, no one was hit. no word on motive. this morning union city police searching for the driver of a white pick-up truck seen driving away after shooting a 15-year-old blocks from his school. it forced authorities to lock down two schools yesterday. james logan high was never

newsroom and people want to know, is it safe to eat beef or drink milk? >> reporter: the usda is assuring everyone the food supply is safe the fallout might impact the cattle industry financially. south korea announced it is halting u.s. beef imports and two retailers there have stopped selling it. starting with the food supply, i was a dairy cow so its meat was -- it was a dairy cow so its meat was never headed to market you cannot get mad cow if milk. the animal had a random mutation. as for the multi-billion dollar agriculture industry, if history is any indication this case will have an impact. when a cow was diagnosed in washington state in 2003, american beef shipments dropped 82%. farmers say testing keeps improving and this proves the system is work. >> my first initial reaction is like wow food safety at its best. the things that we learn from the past issues of bse we've

word on his identity or suspects. anyone with information should call the san francisco police department. san bruno school officials are meeting tonight to decide whether to close two schools. state budget cuts and declining enrollment for the factors this decision. one is located near the site of the deadly 2010 pipeline explosion and fire. the superintendent says the 213 students would be relocated to other neighborhood schools. parents worry the closures will hurt a community still trying to recover from the disaster. residents living in that san bruno neighborhood will have to wait a little longer to find out what is going to happen to a gas pipeline under their city that used to be connected to a section that exploded more than a year ago killing eight and destroying more than 30 homes several thousand feet of line unused underground staff recommended digging up some and filling rest with concrete, many

developing news, new reports that as soon as this morning, felony charges could be filed against a bicyclist who hit and killed a pedestrian in the castro district. amy hollyfield is live near the scene at castro and market with the latest. >> reporter: this is big news in san francisco. there's a history of tension here between bicyclists and pedestrians, especially since it sounds like the district attorney will be going for a felony charge in this case. the last time there was a bicyclist-pedestrian fatality, the d.a. charged it as a misdemeanor. according to the san francisco chronicle, the d.a. will be filing a felony charge in this case this collision that happened at market and castro, one month ago. the bicyclist is a 35-year-old, accused of hitting a 71-year-old pedestrian in the crosswalk and killing him. the case has generated a lot of attention on blogs and internet postings with many
