this morning, immigrants outrage. >> protests in multiple cities against arizona's controversial immigration law. its fate now at the supreme court, which appears to be in favor of it. and parents' plea. agony on their faces. the arizona couple promising never to give up looking for their missing 6-year-old girl. also this morning, ann romney's revelation, a health scare just weeks ago. her brave battle with m.s. and it is soaring to new heights. new york's new world trade center, just inches from a milestone. good morning, everybody.

i'm rob nelson. >> and i'm tanya rivero, in for paula faris. we begin with the red-hot issue of immigration. specifically, arizona's tough immigration law. >> we will officially know where the supreme court stands on it, come june. as abc's tahman bradley reports, yesterday's arguments provided plenty of early clues. >> reporter: the supreme court is taking on one of the most contentious issues in this country, immigration. the question before the court, whether the state of arizona can make its own immigration law requiring police during routine stops, to check the immigration status of anyone they suspect is in the u.s. illegally. the arizona man who brought the case says the law seems un-american. >> i never expected to have to carry my passport in my own country to prove that i belong here. >> reporter: hearing oral arguments yesterday, the justices appeared to find little trouble with major parts of arizona's law. justice anthony kennedy addressed the huge burden illegal immigration puts on the

states. the state of arizona has a massive emergency, with social disrupti disruption, economic disruption. even liberal justice, sonia sotomayor, seemed that arizona exceeded its authority by enacting the law. you can see it's not selling very well. why don't you try to come up with something else? outside the court, and in cities across the country, protests by people who believe arizona's law encourages racial profiling and stereotyping. >> it was a sign whether the states have the right to promote racism, promote hatred and police harassment toward immigrants of all people's colors. >> i don't know how it comes out. there's going to be a whole lot of people that are angry. >> reporter: rob and tanya, the court's decision could have a big impact on the fall campaign. republicans' aggressive stand on illegal immigration, has

alienated h alienated hispanic voters. lawmakers demanded answers from the head of homeland security over that secret service prostitution scandal. janet napolitano was on the hot seat yesterday, as she was questioned for the first time publicly about the scandal. and she blamed it all on a few bad apples. >> it really was, i think, a -- a huge disappointment to the men and women of the secret service, to begin with, who uphold very high standards. and feel their own reputations are dismerged by a few. >> napolitano said there had been no complaints of secret service agents behaving badly in the past 2 1/2 years. health lawmakers are poised to vote on a bill that would keep millions of americans from dishing out a lot more money every month. the measure would prevent interest rates on federal

student loans from doubling as of july 1st. but republicans want to pay for it by cutting money from president obama's health care overhaul law. the vote is set for tomorrow. lawmakers in the senate have postponed making any decisions about the future of the postal service. they voted to give the service $11 billion. but delayed decisions on closing some post offices and ending saturday delivery. the bill now goes to the house. a connecticut has become the 17th state to outlaw the death penalty. governor dan malloy signed the bill into law during a ceremony. he said it a moment for, quote, sober reflection. two current tsa agents are under arrest on drug trafficking and bribery charges. they're accused of allowing cocaine and other drugs to pass through their checkpoints at los angeles international airport, all in exchange for cash. prosecutors say the drugs were allowed at least five times last year.

all of the suspects face ten years in prison. the prosecution's key witness in the john edwards' trial faces more tough questions today. during cross-examination yesterday, andrew young was asked if he had fallen in love with edwards. lawyers tried to point out the inconsistencies in his testimony. questions this morning about newt gingrich's future, now that he's ending his presidential run. gingrich will announce the suspension of his campaign officially next tuesday. at which time he'll also endorse mitt romney. gingrich told romney yesterday he's ready to work together to defeat president obama. the gingrich campaign, though, is more than $4 million in debt. meanwhile, though, ann romney has given a revealing interview on "entertainment tonight." she said in the heat of the primary campaign, just before super tuesday in march, that she was very fatigued because of her multiple sclerosis. she didn't tell anyone how tired

she was. and after that, she took a few weeks off. we have some stunning video here. an abc news exclusive. it's a time-lapse video showing the construction of one world trade center, which, by monday, is expected to be the tallest building here in new york city. of course, one world trade is going up at ground zero in lower manhattan. when it's all done and open for business, the tower will stand 104 floors, 100 of which are currently in place. pretty amazing achievement, isn't it? >> it stands for a whole lot more than that. >> it certainly does. time, now, for weather across the country on this thursday manning. scattered showers from boston to raleigh. severe storms from charleston, west virginia, to memphis. triple-digit heat from south texas. am brill le into nebraska, kansas and colorado. thunderstorms from flagstaff and phoenix, up to the canadian border. showers from seattle to southern california. 67 in sacramento. 57 in portland. 82 in albuquerque.

the federal reserve's latest report on the economy reflects some cautious optimism. fed chief ben bernanke said the central bank will keep interest rates near zero through 2014. and will step in with more stimulus if it's needed. but warns that congress must head off tax hikes come january. and that is exactly what's happened in britain, where the economy shrank for a second-straight quarter. that is the official definition of recession. the government's strict austerity measures have not stimulated the economy as officials had hoped. and checking the morning numbers overseas now. tokyo's nikkei average rose just slightly. hong kong's hang seng is up. and in london, the ftse opened higher, too. on wall street, the dow gained 89 points yesterday. the nasdaq gained 68 points. that's a full 2%. the question everyone wants to know, does apple have a next-best thing in the works to keep its huge profits going? invitation for apple worldwide

developers' conference went out yesterday with no hint that a new phone or other device will be unveiled. of course, they could always surprise us. burger king is moving to give all its chickens and pigs room to roam. the company is promising to phase out cages and crates for its breeding pigs by 2017. it's the first fast food chain to make such a pledge. burger king's enormous purchasing power could be a game-changer. today is the 20th anniversary of the take our daughters and sons to work program. so, if you're taking your child to work today, enjoy the day, of course. the rest of us promise to be on our best behavior. >> speak for yourself on that one. >> i'll watch my mouth today. yeah. next on this thursday, a case certain people are talking about today. a catholic schoolteacher fired for trying to get pregnant using ivf. and for the first time, a kidney is donated twice.

birdie, go home. >> yes. all right. this is a very sad story. the parents of a 6-year-old girl who disappeared from her tucson home say they will do anything to insure her return. >> isabel celis' parents have spoken publicly for the first time about their heartbreak. here's abc's diana alvear. >> to the person or persons, who have isabel, tell us your demands. tell us what you want. we will do anything for her. >> reporter: five days after isabel celis disappeared, desperation has set in. the 6-year-old went to sleep friday night and has not been seen since. her family immediately called police and set out to find her. >> obviously, i'm disappointed that we haven't found her at this point. but that doesn't mean that we're giving up hope. >> reporter: police have scaled back their massive search. their focus now, on what nearby surveillance cameras may have captured and witnesses. they're circulating a questionnaire to neighbors, asking if they, too, have surveillance cameras.
