a lot going on this friday thank you for joining us, i'm kristen sze. and i'm terry mcsweeney in for eric thomas. a cab driver alive after being cab-jacked, kidnapped and driven in the trunk of his cab. amy hollyfield in the east bay where that cabbie found himself free, finally. >> reporter: who are fix night for this cab driver. he ended up here in the oakland hills. once he was tossed out of his car, he went running around knocking on doors pleading for help but people wouldn't open their doors. someone finally did answer the door. he was able to call police and get some help. here's what happened to him. he picked up three men at the bay point bart station. they asked him to take them to an apartment complex in antioch. once they got there they pulled guns on him stole his money, jewelry and cell phone

and put him in the trunk this is 11:30 last night. the next 30 minutes he rode in that trunk and he could hear them arguing about what to do with him. they talked about beating him up, also maybe killing him. they decided to drop him here in the oakland hills and took off. they are currently or they were in a lincoln crown vic, a yellow cab and it says antioch pittsburg on the door. the cab driver is physically okay. he talked to police and they gave him a ride back out to antioch. at this point officers say they don't know why the men decided to let him go and drop him right here. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. we are following breaking news in san francisco. one person injured and a large apartment building had to be evacuated after an early morning fire. this started around 2:45 in an apartment complex that houses

the elderly on woodside avenue. firefighters managed to knock down the fire quickly. they say it could take a while to mop up all the water. investigators are trying to determine if the fire was intentionally set by one of the residents. one person was injured, no word on how serious the injuries are. we'll continue to follow this story. in west oakland this morning police investigating shooting death of a teenager. it happened after 8:00 last night on the 1100 block of 34th street no word on suspects or motive. police have not made any arrests. a neighbor who did not want his face to be seen describes the victim as a good kid. >> all that street violence, he not one of them type of kids he go to school and play with the kids in the neighborhood. he ain't with that violence he don't sell drugs. >> the teen's death marks oakland's 40th homicide of the year and third deadly shooting

since saturday. police trying to determine if alcohol is to blame for an accident that damaged an ac transit bus at the intersection of west grand and telegraph before 2:00 this morning. nobody on the bus was injured but the impact managed to blow-out the bus' doors and windows. the driver was detained as the investigation continues. this morning governor brown ordering prison officials to explore a plan to use a single drug for lethal injections instead of the current three-drug cocktail. an appeal that has blocked executions in the states for the past six years. a judge has ruled the three-drug procedure could violate the constitution's ban on cruel and unusual punishment. it is unlikely any executions in california will take place this year. secretary of state's office validating more than

800,000 signatures that could change california's controversial three strikes law in place since 1994. opponents say they've gathered enough support to put a repeal before voters. the initiative could change the laws so the third strike would also have to be a serious or violent crime. >> coast guard is now suspending all permits for offshore boat races. this move comes two weeks after a deadly accident during a race around the farallon islands. this video taken april 14th, shows what the conditions were like that day, five people were killed when the yacht ran aground. coast guard says the temporary suspension will allow for a thorough review. we spoke with a racer who believes the offshore suspension has to do with the impending america's cup race. >> coast guard is really watching and it is going to be one of the biggest jobs in this area that they've had. we need to have everything in full working order to be very

safe. >> the duck ship race tomorrow will be impacted by the suspension. instead of going all the way out into the ocean racers will only be allowed to go as far as point bonita. a general strike called on may-day before union and nonunion workers. occupy members say they will try to shutdown the golden gate bridge if toll takers, bus and ferry workers died to strike. those workers are involved -- decide to go on strike. officials were preparing for a potential walk-out they say any attempt to shutdown the bridge will not be tolerated. some protesters arrested last year are being told they will not face criminal charges. the alameda county district attorney's office found sufficient evidence to prosecute four protesters uc

berkeley has not made any attempt to prosecute. police arrested 39 protesters. a clash lead to charges that police used excessive force on peaceful demonstrators. new development this morning in the mad cow disease investigation. the agriculture department says the infected cow was euthanized after it became lame and started lying down. the carcass was shipped to a plant for rendering that is where routine tests to discover the mad cow virus. the usda says the cow was almost 11-years-old, not five as originally reported this is the fourth confirmed u.s. case of mad cow officials reiterate there is no risk to the food chain. along the central coast search teams plan to go out again today to look for that gray whale entangled in a fishing net. it has been eluding rescue teams since it was first spotted.

whale watchers spotted the mammal south of big sur tuesday. members of a whale entanglement team have used boats and helicopters to scour the area. the whale has eluded them so far. there's concern the tangled net could prevent the whale from eating. i know you were out there one day, right? >> i was in monterey when they were trying to taken that whale earlier this week what they need the calmer the seas the better the chances. the question is are we going to have that? >> meteorologist mike nicco maybe has the answer. >> the weekend waters will be calmer, today choppy out of the northwest running 20, 25 miles per hour it will get better as the weekend unfolds. good morning. great news for the morning commute, no wet weather to contend with. we talked about how it was going to be cooler, double digits cooler, 13 los gatos,

a family is putting up a $10,000 reward to help find the arsonist who set their home on fire twice. police say the family had their home burned october 18th, while it was being repaired it burned again january 13th. $10,000 from the family brings the total reward to $20,000. this morning one of our viewers has restored the faith of a man who defended our country. earlier this month the 92-year-old broke down while publicly pleaded for the thief who stole his sexton to return it. it was later used to teach kids in school. while the thieves haven't been caught one of four of our viewers heard his plea and gave him another.
