good morning. happy friday i'm terry mcsweeney in for eric thomas. and i'm kristen sze. breaking news san francisco. firefighters on the scene of a highrise fire that sent several people to the hospital. katie marzullo is live on woodside avenue at the scene with the latest. >> reporter: four people, we don't know the extent of their injuries. the chief tells me they did suffer burns and smoke inhalation. this is a highrise billing it belongs to the san francisco housing authority. -- that means a challenge for firefighters. at this point the fire is out, so the investigation is underway. arson investigators are on the scene that is standard

practice. the fire chief -- the balance tall beyond chief tells me the cause is -- is not obvious. the flames erupted in one unit on the 8th floor after 2:30 this morning. four taken to the hospital because of -- with injuries from this fire. we don't know extent of their burns or the smoke inhalation they suffered. we do know at one point the water from the fire engines became con tam fated with the blood of one -- contaminated with the blood of one of the victims. that caused special cleanup effort to begin so nobody would come in contact with that contaminated water. post fire, two units unin -- uninhabitable. the chief tells me any time a fire is below ground or high above ground it is a special challenge they did use a highrise protocol this morning,

40 firefighters on the scene. katie marzullo, abc7 news. the weekend drive too san francisco from the north bay will be a challenge this weekend -- the unstatement of the year caltrans will close and demolish doyle drive. >> reporter: especially if you are going to be commuting during normal hours. i wanted to give you a quick update on the crash on the upper deck of the bay bridge right lane past treasure island early enough and no injuries reported i don't think we'll see much of a delay. crews already there working to clear the crash. here's a live shot of the golden gate bridge depending on when you commute, you will want to an individual this all together. i want to talk to -- to avoid this all together. >> i want to talk to you about the construction doyle drive closed tonight 8 p.m. until 5 amman day. >> there will be a detour --

in place when it reopens monday. then this allows caltrans workers to completely renovate doyle drive. when it reopens in a few years it will be presidio parkway, a safer roadway to the golden gate bridge. try to avoid driving, if you can, especially during normal hours. ferries will be a great alternate. the golden gate ferry will operate twice as many trips as usual between sausalito and san francisco from 8:00 tomorrow morning until 8 p.m.. saturday, actually there will be 20 trips from larkspur to san francisco. sunday the last trip back will be at 8:40 in addition to that, with the doyle drive closure, of course 19th avenue will be

teen's due process rights were violated when he was removed from an honors english class as punishment. they claim the punishment could ruin their son's academic future. student loan debts can be crippling for college grads. today the house is set to vet on bail that would keep interest rates from doubling for another year. republicans and democrats can't agree9y on how to pay for it. >> reporter: republicans and democrat agree in theory now is not the right time to raise student loan rates. in washington it is never that simple. lawmakers are battling over how to pay for preventing college loan interest rates from doubling from 3.4% to 6.8% in july. this week president obama travels to three battleground states and attacked republicans for failing to introduce legislation to stop the increase. >> the president: we can't make higher education a luxury

developing news now authorities in at least three east bay cities are looking for the men who carjacked a taxi driver late last night then drove around with i am in a trunk possibly debating where to kill him. -- with him in a trunk possibly debating where to kill him. >> reporter: terrifying night for him. imagine what it was like for the people in the oakland hills we are at joaquin miller and skyline. the man went around knocking on doors frantically begging for help this was after midnight waking people up, some did not open their doors to him. someone finally did and he was able to call police. the man was this cab driver he had just spent a terrifying half hour in the trpblg of his own car. he could hear his captors arguing over whether they should kill him. the cab driver picked up the three at the bay point bart station they wanted a ride to antioch when they got there they robbed him at gunpoint

took his money, jewelry and cell phone and put him in the trunk and drove around and talked about whether they should beat him or kill him all while the cab driver was listening. they decided to drop him in the oakland hills after midnight. the driver is fine, they did not hurt him. the men did get away they drove away in his cab, a yellow cab. it has a license plate: 8 z 27362. police say, just try to remember 8z2. call it in they say it also says antioch pittsburg on the side. the three men did get away in that car no arrests have been may. police don't know why they decided not to kill him or how or why they ended up here in the oakland hills. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. we are following breaking news in san jose the s.w.a.t. team is in a standoff it began

when police got a call reporting a stabbing victim in the 200 block of cleveland avenue. officers found a plan immediate -- found a man bleeding on the sidewalk. he died a short time later. police attempted to make contact with the person who called and that person refuted to talk and told the officers they were barricading themselves in the home and had firearms. no word on how many are in the home. we will bring more details as we -- as we get them. four people injured, dozens ordered to shelter in place after an early morning fire at a highrise apartment complex started 2:45 on woodside avenue firefighters managed to knock the flames down quickly, two apartments were damaged and several may have serious water damage. investigators trying to determine if the fire was intentionally set. four people had to be transported to the hospital. no word on how serious those
