>> terry: doyle drive is going and by monday it better be gone. cal trans is replacing the connection to the golden gate bridge before the monday morning commute. here is a live picture. as you can see from sky7hd. crews are working to get it down. we'll tell you how to get around the doyle drive closure this weekend. good morning, i'm terry mcsweeney. dig big story, massive effort to demolish the old sky way, hopefully by monday morning's commute. showing us the progress since

last night. that is a lot. it's been 12 hours and they have done that much. that route shut down all weekend long. john alston has an update from the demolition zone. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. so far so good, workers have been at it nonstop. working 12-hour shift. 200 workers at any given time. let's take a look at the demolition that has been going on, heavy machinery pulverizing what is left of doyle drive. there will be 65 tons of debris and concrete and rebar, will be hauled off and recycled over the coming weeks. one of the issues has been dust in the area with all this concrete. from time to time we've seen workers adding water on to the scene to prevent the dust from getting too bad. we have not seen a lot of dust.

in fact there are air monitors keeping an eye on air quality also for the safety of the workers. what we hear from spokesperson that everything is on schedule. >> i was here last night. they just got started so quickly. then i got here this morning and they've accomplished a lot. i talked to the crew. they are on target, speaking thousands of feet of demolition. they have accomplished a lot. >> reporter: as of a few minutes ago, three lanes in each direction on the golden gate bridge, golden gate spokesperson says, of course, important to use the ferry or alternative ways if you want to get in and out of the city fairly easy. it could get tricky around 3:00 when people start heading in for the 7:00 6:00 game at at&t park.

they are expecting quite a rush of people that are getting on the regular ferries. that will be an issue. what we're hearing, a demolition on track to be open 5:00 monday morning. >> terry: now, you've seen the mess. you probably want to avoid it. here is frances dinglasan. >> good morning. here is a live shot from sky7hd showing the demolition and spotlights to avoid right now. we're seeing the first signs of slowdown along the major detour routed. northbound 19th avenue, moving at 36 miles an hour, we can do this waze traffic app. northbound great highway is also slow. sun set boulevard could be an alternate for you. this is great way to check out park presidio.

traffic is flowing well. if you want to consider the bay bridge do expect a big back-up before the giants game. >> terry: drivers having to take detours and for the first time in memory southbound traffic on park presidio is being allowed to turn left on geary boulevard and california street. traffic enforcement officers what you would expected to see when you approach the intersection today and tomorrow. officers will be stationed there throughout the weekend. san francisco pd believes it's going to help commuters keep moving along and help drivers that weren't expecting major changes. some commuters want to avoid the confusion altogether by taking a ferry. >> there are lots of people on the boat. i took one of the earlier ones. it's one of the best things to do. >> having your ticket early prevents from you standing in line to get one. they say extra shuttle times and water vessels were added to

the ferry schedule. sky 7 overhead as the to last two cars entered on doyle drive. first it was lone suv. and the last car on doyle drive, wait a second, there is a pickup truck behind. a red pickup truck, it's tough to say if they were in cahoots or the suv thought he was going to get the crown. chp did two sweeps of doyle drive to make sure no one was lurking to be the last one on the doomed structure. we'll be checking live cameras at bay area bridges. >> terry: new this morning, firefighters in hayward are getting credit for squag woman and two dogs from a burning home. the woman was cooking and went up to lie down. she woke up to find the apartment on fire. emergency crews say the woman was transferred to eden hospital is expected to be okay. her two chihuahuas were not hurt. fire under investigation. >> in alameda county, a house

fire in unincorporated san leandro is under investigation. take a look at video from sky 7 over the scene on pico place and page street. the fire was knocked down in 30 minutes. still, enough time for the house to be destroyed. a neighbor said he was having a late dinner before 9:00. he heard loud booms. >> i head three large explosions. went out and took a look. i seen the neighbors are running around. i looked up and sure enough the flames are shooting up, 20 feet up high. >> we know there were a number of individuals. house was occupied at the at the time of the fire. everyone got out safely. >> they are focusing on how the fire got started. >> berkeley police have arrested a man suspected of running two bicyclists off the road last week. it shows the moment on wednesday when the driver of a black acura

rammed the first bicyclist. the one with the camera knocked off his bike but neither seriously injured. they have arrested the owner. acura. he was arrested at the jack london inn yesterday. he reported the car stolen after the incident. he is on parole and faces charges of felony hit and run and heroin possession. pg&e ee's diablo canyon nuclear power plant remains closed down. number two had to be shut down yesterday because of a slimy problem. intake screens are clogged by jellyfish like creatures. they are called salp. nobody is sure when going to leave. it leaves california without an operating nuclear power plant and it's been off for three months while they look at worn out tubes that carry radioactive

that is the word we have been putting out. if you can stay away from it until monday morning until 5:00 a.m. that would be a good idea. as we pull out and take a look what used to be an access road to and departure from the golden gate bridge, look at doyle drive. it is non-usable and in about, i don't know, about 36 hours it will be nonexistent. they are making for a new way to get on the golden gate bridge. what an absolutely spectacular sight from sky7hd. everybody seems to be cooperating. now take a look what it looked like last night. they were chopping away at doyle drive, a massive effort to demolish the old sky way. got to be done by 5:00 a.m. monday morning and commute can get going. we'll take closer look at the overall project but right now, if you got to go to marin, got

to come in the city, how do you get around all that? let's go to frances dinglasan. >> it's actually still safe to take the golden gate bridge and main detour route, highway 1 on to 19th avenue. we are seeing the first signs of slowing, heading northbound. live view showing the demolition work still going on. i want to take you to abc7's exclusive waze traffic app. here is right at geary. street lights are flashing red. there is traffic control to turn left on geary. we have a traffic spotter moving around 25 miles an hour. over as you head closer to the bridge, moving 40 miles an hour. right now it's still safe. we notice that things are slowing down. they were a little slower on 19th avenue. there is some slowing northbound

on the great highway. this is great thing to have handy while you are commuting. the other alternate is richmond-san rafael bridge down to the bay bridge toll plaza and flight there are no delays at the tolls. you can see here, still looking pretty good, about f that changes you can use the waze app. the golden gate bridge is looking good thanks to ongoing safety upgrades. but doyle drive that is why they have to take it down. it had to be replaced to meet current safety standards. heather ishimaru has more on this weekend's big job. >> reporter: the fire department was here doing tests right outside the new tunnel. it will go into use for the first time on monday kearpg greongth of traffic. when the project is completed in 2015 it will carry southbound traffic only. in the major earthquake tunnel walls are designed there might be damage but no collapse.

seismic retrofitting was rejected with low safety rating. >> a two. it's pretty low. out of the inventory of all the bridges in california, it's probably the lowest. >> replacement will require demolition of 76-year-old structure. the bridge will be open but it's expected to be congested. >> my suggestion to to be take advantage of the ferry. if you haven't been on a ferry for a while, larkspur and sausalito were more than doubling service. >> marin residents expect southbound 101 to be a parking lot. i think it's going to be a head-on collision on the bridge. you are sitting there and you are lucky. >> and replacement was considered an option for the golden gate bridge. after the loam had a prieta

elevations looking at winds up to 20 miles an hour. 52 in livermore and fremont. half moon bay, haze, otherwise 52 in san jose. temperatures are as much as 3-7 degrees warmer on average. livermore coming with five degrees warming this morning. a nice clear start. plenty warmer over the weekend and if you want to go by the coast. today is the day. we'll see more fog and warm up a couple degrees tomorrow. away from the coast. santa clara and inland valleys and cooler pattern begins on monday. so here is where we're taug stacking up. low 70s on the peninsula, up in livermore and 76 in san jose. oakland 72 and 3-8 degrees warmer than average. if you like the warmer weather. it's not too hot today and pretty comfortable with high

pressure in control. should than nice afternoon with the storm track staying well to the north. we're going to look for the winds around the bay to be light. that is why we're warming up. and inland valleys to near 80 degrees. and flip side of the coin, coastline we'll see cooler temperatures with fog and not much warming there. statewide, nell los angeles, low 60s in the northern sierra and back home, 69 around the bay in richmond to 76 in san rafael. 73 in fremont with 80 in concord today. one of the warmer locations is napa and gilroy, and 62 in monterey. weekend looks nice with some general warming all around the bay and cooler monday and tuesday. wednesday, maybe a sprinkle for our north bay on thursday. >> terry: you can't get the rain out of the forecast.

>> lisa: we'll see. we have breaking news for you right now. 15 minutes ago reports of a 4.1 earthquake in southern california, it happened along the san andreas fault near the town of devore, 60 miles east of los angeles. high-rises in los angeles were swaying because of the earthquake. we are told that houses have sustained some damage in rancho cucamunga. an earthquake, 4.1. any more news on this we'll have it for you on abc7. >> day two of the n.f.l. draft, sports anchor larry beil also tells us who the niners and

>> terry: breaking news out of southern california, moderate earthquake has struck, magnitude 4.1 quake struck 20 minutes ago 20 miles west of devore. there are reports of damage in charge rancho cucamunga. reports of high-rise buildings swaying in los angeles.

we'll keep you posted. big news in our area, massive effort to demolishing sky way to doyle drive by monday morning's commute. here is the progress. they have doyle drive shut down all weekend and to get it done, john alston has an update for us from the demolition zone. good morning. >> reporter: the beat goes on. workers have been at it for more than 12 hours. they started at 8:00 last night. it's been nonstop activity. if you look over here, workers still going on and some of the rubble that has been left behind. the pile of rebar there, that is the section the on-ramp from lombard. if you were getting on doyle drive from lombard, the ramp would curved by the palace of fine arts, that is the area that has been demolished. also some decking closer to the golden gate bridge has been

removed. about 65,000 tons of debris, that will be hauled off in the weeks and months to come. as for traffic around crissy field expected to be a mess. it could get interesting this afternoon coming over from marin for the folks that are heading to town for the giants game. >> today we've got a boat going over 4:00 for the game. so from 3:00 on the larkspur fer are be very busy. direct service to at&t park is pulled out but we've doubled the schedule i'm recommending that people ride the regular service and then walk or grab a cab or f-line down to at&t park. >> reporter: back live where the work continues at any given time there are 200 workers here tearing down doyle drive. the spokesperson for this project so far it's on schedule. that work has been moving very rapidly.

i'm not sure if it could get done early. right now, we're looking at this project and new detour being up and running 5:00 a.m. for the monday morning commute. it's so important to have it done by 5:00 a.m. but for weekend drivers, frances dinglasan is going to tell you how to get around that. >> it depends on what time you are leaving home or heading through the area. whether you should take the park presidio or bay bridge detour. here is live shots and see the demolition and dust where john is. that is going to continue through the weekend. golden gate bridge traffic it's been looking really light all morning. we haven't seen that many cars head in and out of san francisco. but i will take you to exclusive waz traffic app. this will give you speeds at the city street level. slowing southbound on 19th avenue.

earlier it was northbound. as you head towards park presidio and geary, give yourself extra time. street lights are flashing red but no major delays. bay bridge toll plaza is looking very light right now as well. >> terry: the warning from caltrans, don't drive over the golden gate bridge unless you absolutely have to. the closure is expected to have a major impact on traffic. for the first time in memory, southbound traffic on park presidio being allowed to turn left on geary and california. nick smith continues our team coverage. >> at exactly 8:00 p.m. this is what happened. traffic enforcement officers took position. they will be stationed here throughout the weekend. they believe it will help keep commuters moving along and help drivers. >> take a look at this map from officials at presidio parkway.

new this morning, the reward for information leading to sierra lamar is going up. and father is scheduled to hold a media briefing in an hour from now tha about reward that currently stands at $10,000. air is lamar left for school and disappeared. they found her purse and cellphone but no other clues. $10,000 was posted earlier this month. >> san francisco medical examiner has identified the body of one of the sailors lost at sea during a race around the farallon islands. jordan from. he was a graduate of redwood high. he was one of eight crewmen aboard the low speed chase when it was hit by a rogue wave. five people died. medical customer did not say where the body was found. three others are still missing. >> after a lot of controversy,

it turns out there will be no criminal charges in the alleged attack on nadia lockyer. the wife of bill lockyer claims she was attacked by an ex-boyfriend. that led to allegations of a sex tape and lockyer and e-mail saying her husband had given her illegal drugs. she denied sending that e-mail. now a state attorney general office is reviewing the evidence it will not be filing charges. >> president obama says he will veto a house bill to prevent the cost of student loans from doubling. he is going to do that because the republican controlled house will pay for the bill by abolishing a preventative health fund that helps pay for cancer screenings for women. and. >> sad truth there are people

it's not known to a cause damage but it is causing damage, moderate damage in rancho cucamunga. it's 60 miles east of los angeles but high-rise buildings swayed as result of this earthquake. again, 4 -- let's get up to sky 7 and take a look what is going on locally. that is some of what remains of doyle drive. they have been working at it for roughly 12 hours, maybe 12 hours and a half right now and they are getting the job done. if you are heading towards the golden gate bridge or coming into the city from marin, you will be able to get your job done. let's check in with frances dinglasan. >> it's amazing to see how much work they have gotten done. i want to show you traffic,

major detour, park presidio boulevard on to 19th avenue. we have a traffic spotter on our exclusive waze app moving at 25 miles an hour. you may want to consider lincoln boulevard. we're not seeing big delays in the area. at one point, some heading southbound and northbound but right now, this is realtime. it's actually looking pretty good. a lot of folks may be heading to the richmond-san rafael bridge, it's looking good there right now. bay bridge is delay free. no problems but with the giants game coming to this evening, you might want to avoid that and consider mass transit. >> terry: drivers are listening to you. marine mammal expert will return to see if a dolphin found his way back to the ocean.

healthy adult dolphin looks lost and disoriented. he became separated from other members of the pod and they are hopeful they can make it out on his own. they say about 90% of dolphins who find themselves in a predicted. like this do make it out but a lot of people in southern california out to watch that dolphin this morning and tolls probably talk about that 4.1 earthquake, moderate damage in southern california. weather-wise? >> lisa: it will be a warming trend taking us above normal but it will be breezy at the coast. here look from sky 7. it's very clear, beautiful start. no fog, and if you have any outdoor plans this weekend or even the week ahead, no problems. we will be cooling off a little bit.

right now temperatures are pretty cool in north bay valleys. we're looking at low 50s in napa fremont at 52 as well as livermore with 54 in san francisco, 55 in redwood city and on the coast. a little haze, 52 in half moon bay. a clear start, sunny and warmer both today and tomorrow except at our coast tomorrow. cooler pattern begins on monday as our bridge of high pressure begins to flaten just a little bit. here is the fair weathermaker, building into the eastern pacific. it allows for sinking air and warming air. storm track is staying well to the north. we'll see a lot of sunshine around the bay and temperatures coming up especially in inland valleys. we'll see the warmer days away from the bay and along the coast. it will remain breezy and winds out of the northwest, 10-20

miles an hour. not much warming there. tomorrow we'll lose a couple degrees and partly sunny skies, winds have been pretty gusty along the coast and offshore. point reyes wind gusts to near 40 miles an hour. so if you are headed out to the bay, it could be breezy but still nice and clear out there. 78 in fresno and 81 in sacramento. along the coast. low 70s with 72 in reno. 63 in northern sierra and 67 in the southern sierra. quite a temperature spread today with the 60s at our shoreline and breezy. upper 60s san francisco, low 70s in oakland. you got the low 80s once again for concord and antioch. pretty nice looking day. 79 in santa rosa and down by the monterey bay, we're looking at breezy conditions with 62 there. 71 in salinas is the warm spot

in gilroy. seven-day forecast, couple degrees have warming inland and couple degrees cooler at the coast with the fog and everyone cools down much of the workweek and a few raindrops in the north bay on thursday.
