trafficking and parking control officers are trying to direct drivers through san francisco and around doyle drive. if you have to cross the golden gate bridge, caltrans recommends taking park presidio boulevard but impatient drivers struck out on their own to seek alter -- al tier al -- alternate. >> 10-15 minutes to get a block. >> have to bring a lot of patience. i knew this would be like this. >> even though caltrans and the city have beenlining this closure for some time, it still caught people offguard. >> we're tourists. >> it on the news but... >> forgot not now. >> many are heeding the warning and avoiding the situation. caltrans reports a 50% drop in

geary which is a rarity. so folks are taking at advantage of that. >> ama: now to sergio quintana with another commute option. >> reporter: throughout the saturday we've noticed this has been pretty busy here at the larkspur terminal. we have send full arrivals and depart tours, the most popular ferry was the one heading to the giants game. the three special ferries have been sold out, and in an effort to provide plenty of options for people to avoid the golden gate bridge and the detours, ferry service on the weekend has been expanded. there has been hourly ferry service between mere and san francisco and they'll continue tonight, and the last ferry is

at 10:30 p.m. >> why are you take can -- taking the ferry. >> i was told the adults they were going avoid the traffic. >> how what the ferry today? >> it was good. pretty crowded, but other than that, fine. >> and you hear it mentioned a couple times earlier. this is what it looks lick to drive over the golden gate bridge. hardly any traffic. and they're hoping that people will continue that trend through tomorrow as construction continues. as for ferry service, they have seen a 50% increase in ridership today because of the detours, and also i should mention that 10:30 ferry, the last one, caltrans has been telling us now recently they're a little worried people are not going to make that boat if it's too full. they're hoping people will take some earlier fer riz, so don't stay too late in san francisco is what they're saying. reporting live, abc-7 news. >> alan: the demolition began 24 hours ago and crews say work is right on schedule.

a little more than a mile of doyle drive is closed. this is a live look from sky 7hd over scene right now. coops -- abc-7 news reporter john alston has a look at the progress. >> oh. >> they came and cheered the demise of doyle drive. it was thrill for 11-year-old angel. >> i think, wow. like, my first time ever seeing this stuff going down. >> spectators came in waves to would watch the demolition. among them, lawyer. >> we never lost a case on doyle drive. i was very proud of that record. >> for years he was caltrans attorney who defended the state of california against lawsuits brought by doyle drive motorists. >> had some problems with it, and a lot of accidents, a lot of injuries, a lot of fatilities. >> it was good roadway for when it was built for 1936. but it needed improvement for a long, long time.

and finally it's getting it. >> reporter: since 8:00 p.m. friday 200 workers have been dismantling the roadway one section at a time. $1 billion project to make the roadway less vulnerable to earthquakes, constant stream of water and mist keeps the dust level down. the debris includes 65,000 tons of concrete and metal will chill be recycled. >> they're able to get the rubble out of the way of the new temporary bypass and then they have to build up the road and pave and it stripe and it get it ready for monday morning. >> this animation shows how it will look for drivers heading into san francisco. they'll pass through a tunnel and then on to the newly paved road where the elevated doyle drive used to stand. this will be the temporary route for the next three years while the northbound tunnel is built. as for the old doyle drive? well, there's not much love lost. >> that was an eyesore for sure, i think. so, yeah, i'm hoping that everyone else is happy as we are

>> two cars major damage. one of its side. one damaged in the front. and basically requested a couple medical helicopters. a total of six patients today. >> three people were stabbed during a fight in brentwood not far from the crash scene. it's not clear if the stabbing victim was the same person who died in the accident. >> alan: new video of a near san leandro that left six people homeless. a two-store home burst into flames shortly after 9:00 last night. the fire which could be seen for 580, was out in 30 minutes. destroyed the house and the fire is now under investigation. >> ama: coming up, paying tribute to one of the five people lost in the yachting accident on the farallon island. today's touching memorial service. >> when i seen his face, that was nobody i've ever seen before. >> how an eight-year-old boy who stopped a thief who tried to steal his mom's purse.

he was a visiting sign scientist from ireland, memorial service was held for him at st. mary church in berkeley. he had been in the u.s. for nine months doing work in reducing energy in buildings. >> he was an extremely talented and extremely promising young scientist, and his loss is immeasurable. >> he was one of five crew members who died april 14th april 14th during a race. three others survived. i. >> ama: police are asking for the public's haven't concerning the death of a man in golden gate park. just before 7:30 police were called for a well being check on a 66-year-old man on a bench. the man was pronounced dead at the scene. police are investigating the report the man may have been involved in an altercation near the studio. >> alan: why you won't be able to buy lotto tickets after 10:00 tonight.

livermore, 72. 71, san jose. here's the highlights. clear sky overnight, a little patchy coastal cloud. a warmer day on sunday, and then after that, we will get into a cooler weather pattern and temperatures will start to come down as we head towards mid-week, you can see clearing overnight tonight. maybe a little bit of cloudiness just touching the coast, otherwise, look for temperatures this evening. 53 for antioch. 52 for concord. san francisco, 52. in the north bay, with the clear sky and the wind will start to come down. temperatures cooler. mid-to-upper 40s for santa rosa and for the napa valley. high pressure in place. kicking the storm track well to the north of us. up towards the pacific northwest. that's where the rain will be. before the bay area. we'll keep it dry. actually the entire state will remain dry for at least the next three to five days. we do have this very weak cold
