>> alan: around-the-clock work is showing progress. right now crews are paving the lanes. >> ama: construction crews reached a milestone this morning, knocking down the last of the elevated take and columns, reducing doyle drive to large chunks of concrete. >> alan: we're 12 hours away from the deadline, and tonight they're racing to open the new tunnel and roadway to for tomorrow's commuters heading to and from the golden gate bridge. sky 7 is live over the site, and john al stan -- alston has been there all day. are they going to make it? >> reporter: they're saying they are. this construction ballet is

coming to an end. you canning see the mounds of debris of what was doyle drive and what will become the new roadway in matter of hours. this afternoon we got a preview of what it will look like to drive on the new roadway tomorrow. construction workers will be clear of the traffic lanes but the mounds of rubble will linger for months. marin resident, who got a test run,s excited to see the change. >> when i come into the city at it going to feel like a celebration of the city. >> the bulk of the work involves paving the new road from the tunnel down toward the palace of fine arts. nearly 400 truckloads or asphalt, and then the lane mashings. it was only yesterday demolition crews were tearing down the seismically unsafe ramp that was built in 1936.

>> heavy steel. it's a well-constructed bridge. it was difficult to take down. >> in its place will be a redesigned road that drivers will use for the next the years while the billion dollar project is finished. tomorrow drivers pass through a dispunl then the road curves before heading into the marina. >> it's a curve but nothing too dramatic. >> a moveable barrier between each direction of traffic, and there will be plenty of electronic warning signs so go with the new 35 miles-per-hour speed limit. >> please bay attention to the signs on the road. even though we're posting 35-miles-an-hour, people get distracted and get into accidents. >> caltrans predicts an adjustment period of a few weeks. >> i can't wait to see what it's like when it done. i can put up with a little discomfort or curves.

>> reporter: there will be some safety tests tonight before the roadway is finally open at 5:00 this morning. if you're here, you can expect to see extra caltrans workers and chp officers to make sure the drivers stay in line with the lower speed limit and the curve there. >> alan: the pre press -- presidio parkway is expected to open in three years. you can see the dramatic difference. the parkway will have wider lanes, separated by a median. the design will serve the same traffic capacity as doyle drive. on the average weekday 120,000 vehicles use doyle drive. >> ama: for the latest on the roadways, let's get to sue. >> good afternoon, good evening, thank you so much. very exciting. this is going to be neat tomorrow.

you can see the golden gate is flowing smoothly off the waldo grade. cars are coming into and leaving san francisco. no problems through the toll plaza, you'll have backups through golden gate. the toll plaza on the bay bridge, no problem here. let's look at the abc-7 downloadable app. is want to show you, we have been getting live shots from a traffic spotter. this is what doyle drive looked like a few minutes ago. a bit bumper-to-bumper off the bridge. once you get on to 19th, another shot. and it's flowing smoothly out of the tunnel heading down towards 19th and golden gate park, and you can see that traffic is bumper to bumper there. you can download this for free

and get alerts and updates. >> ama: people have been trying to get around the construction all day. many decided the ferry was the best way to get to at&t park for the giants game. >> reporter: well, it's pretty clear that today a lot of people decided not drive and instead decided to take the ferry. i want to show you now, as people try to make their way back to marin county, right in there are hundreds of people waiting for the 5:45 ferry, which, as i understand, is actually sold out. i've been taking notes this afternoon. the 5:45 has sold out, the 4:40 has sold out. the 3:30 sold out. clearly taking the ferry was a very popular option today. >> next in line, please. >> lines of fans made for a busy day at the ferry terminal use, why did you take the ferry. >> because of doyle park closure. >> for those hoping to get a direct route to at&t park, the

special round-trip service sold out earlier this weekend. >> which one are you taking? >> the 11:30 hopefully. still make it if we get to 12. >> the rest of the giants faithful and other san francisco bound travelers leaded on to the late morning ferries in droves. and where ferries're full, many streets and highways were not. for the second day in a row, traffic leading to and from the golden gate bridge did snarl up a bit through the presidio, but traffic on almost bard was light to say the least, and the detour recommended by caltrans, it was bustling but not too busy. for those who chose the bay bridge, traffic backed up sunday heading into the toll plaza, just like saturday. >> bay bridge driving. >> how was the backup? >> bumper to bumper all the way. real slow. >> he avoided the traffic headache he got yesterday by ferrying into an francisco now.

made no arrests. san jose's 12th homicide in the year. and in fremont, a house party where most of the guests appeared to be teenagers, in a house on hyde park drive. police say it got out of control because word of the party spread on facebook. >> san francisco police hope witnesses come forward after a man was short in north beach this morning. someone opened fire on the richmond resident just after 2:00 this morning. the victim was hit in the leg and is expected to survive. the gunshots woke at least one neighbor. >> so it sounded like nine or 12 times, bang, bang, bang, bang, and then it was over, and then within seconds i heard sirenses because there's usually cops on the streets. >> evidence markers covered parts of two blocks. >> alan: ross marry kim my has anothercourt battle in front of him.
