thank you for joining us i'm kristen sze. i'm eric thomas. big rig accident has both directions of i-680 shutdown will a haz-mat team figure out how to remove the potentially explosive chemicals it is hauling. amy hollyfield is live at the scene with the latest. >> reporter: i want you to look here two southbound lanes just opened up cars are slowly making their way through. that is progress here on the southbound side. northbound 680 is still closed. they hope to change that soon. here's a close-up shot, video of what caused this. tractor trailer crashed and

went over the center divide. the truck was southbound that managed to block southbound and northbound lanes. it was carrying chemical fast made officials nervous. hazardous chemicals so a haz-mat crew came out and made sure the chemicals were safe that they didn't spill during the accident. they also had to cleanup diesel that spilled on to the highway this happened 10:00 last night. it took seven hours to get these couple of lanes open. >> we are trying to lessen the impact of the morning commute. we are trying to do our best. a lot of commodity, a lot of mass to move, only so many people and so many resources. >> reporter: here is the truck now it is upright on the northbound side. they still think they have a couple of hours until they can get that side open that side is not where the heavy commute happens, so it hasn't been a priority.

southbound has been a priority. i want you to look at a live picture, i know is getting confusing all these different directions. this is the southbound side, the two lanes that just opened. you can see there's quite a back-up to work through. it is moving slowly. but, it is moving. we've got progress to report, at least. two lanes open southbound. they are hoping to get a lane open on the northbound side soon. again that hasn't been major priority. they wanted to get this side moving. i spoke with the truck driver he's still at the scene he's okay. he didn't want to say much he did tell me it was a terrifying experience. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. glad he's okay. the other commute we are watching is the golden gate bridge approach in san francisco. right now the scheduled opening time of the new detour that crews worked hard to finish this weekend after demolishing the old doyle drive. katie marzullo is there live. looks like they beat their

timeline by a few minutes. >> reporter: they did. i get to be the bearer of good news. if we are lucky you will see cars pass through, traffic light at this hour the first few commuters to try the new connector get the of zipping right along. it could get trigger -- get trickier as the day goes. better advantage point sky 7 hd above the newly opened doyle drive traffic going in both directions. couple things you want to know, if you haven't left yet, new movable median barrier between getting off the bridge before you get to the tunnel that will help people from crossing in oncoming traffic. also they can move it so they can adjust for which direction of traffic is busier at any given time. the other tricky part on the city sigh of the tunnel, the road is going to curve quite a bit. you want to be ready for that,

go slowly to prepare and be aware behind the wheel. the speed limit has been reduced to 35 miles an hour. but, the lanes are wider and there should be improvement that should make it easier and safer to traverse. >> you have more vision, peripheral vision for the entire area. >> i found doyle drive a little tight. i always got a little nervous when i was approaching it and diving it. in new thing, i think i will adjust to it, i'm looking forward it to. >> reporter: you might see chp officers out there leading the pilot car, traffic back and forth. extra chp officers will be out here today to keep everything going smoothly as folk tries -- folks try this cute for the first time this morning. all of this part of a one billion dollar seismic safety

retrofit for doyle drive. the entire project will be finished in 2015 which includes a second tunnel. we check in now with sue hall and she will let us know if there are any back-ups on doyle drive. not yet. we have clear roads, people are taking their time, new approach, slight curve, not like the s-curve on the bay bridge. but it going to take a little getting used to. we don't have any back-ups. we are going where we just had amy hollyfield reporting live. sean lanes a couple southbound lanes on 680 are -- are getting through, northbound should be a few more minutes with this big rig accident has traffic jammed. highway 84 or foothill would be your alternate. we have a "sig alert" in san francisco southbound 101 just getting reports that those lanes have been reopened. let's take a quick look at

your bay bridge toll and the waze app, bumper-to-bumper. it is a free app you can down and get updates and alerts. 5:07 now. right now, oakland police are trying to determine what led to the murder of a 37-year-old hayward resident. family and friends held a vigil for the victim last night. officers found the victim shot to death near 13th and franklin streets before 6:00 yesterday morning. the victim had been in some sort of verbal altercation before the shooting. the victim was a transgender woman named brandy. police are still looking for the shooter. police asking witnesses to a shooting in the north beach neighborhood to come forward somebody opened fire on a 19-year-old richmond resident after 2:00 yesterday morning near montgomery and broadway. victim was hit in the leg and is expected to survive. the gunshots woke a neighbor. >> sound like 9 to 12 times,

bang, bang, then over within seconds i heard sirens down the street there is usually cops. >> evidence markers stretched across two blocks. police have made no arrests. contra costa county firemen say sparks from a metal grinder caused a fire that destroyed an abandoned bait shop. firefighters got the call last night. it took a half hour to knock the flames down. amtrak service was shutdown for an hour because the tracks bordered the fire. the smoke could be seen all over the east bay. ross mirkarimi says he plans to go back to court this week to try to get his stay away order lifted. the order prevents him from having direct contact with his wife and son. a judge issued the order after he was charged with domestic violence following an argument with his wife. he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor false imprisonment charges. on radio this weekend he said

this morning officials at city college of san francisco are expected to unveil a new land to try to save the school's culler that department. the department feeds to cut $250,000 or shut doors in july. the school's cafeteria is run by culinary art students they stand to lose the hands-on training that gives them an edge. college officials are set to reveal plans for a fundraiser today. some of california's top chefs are trying to stop the state from time to time posing a july 1st, ban on foie gras. it is made from the liver of a duck or goose which has undergone a fattening process. animal rights advocates object to the process which involves shoving food down the birds' throats. the foie gras bandits back to 2003 when dan and the i-team

tri-valley commuters. >> one direction of 680 remains shutdown in pleasanton after a big rig overturn. amy hollyfield is live at the scene with the latest on the cleanup. the northbound lane which was completely shutdown is now one lane open now? >> reporter: we've got one lane open we have progress. i'm standing on some lanes here in the northbound and you can see what is blocking it. here is the truck. they've got it uprighted that is good. they still have a mess to cleanup. they think it could be another hour or two they did manage to get one lane open on the northbound side. which is good news, it is progress. as you can imagine that lane is moving very slowly. at least it is moving. earlier, both sides of the highway were closed because of this tractor trailer it hit the guardrail overturned, jumped the center divide and caused lots of problems. they had to close all lanes in both directions at the sunol

stabbed at a house party saturday night. witnesses say the party was just wrapping when a fight broke out he was stabbed and pronounced dead at a hospital early sunday morning. within man is under arrest on -- one man is under arrest on suspicion of homicide three juveniles were taken in as accessories. police investigating the circumstances of a fatal shooting involving 18-year-old shot and dying on the campus of lowell elementary late saturday night efforts to revive the teen failed and he died at the scene. police have not determined a motive and have made no arrests this was san jose's 12th homicide of the year. family, friends and san francisco giants will hold a public memorial today for one of the sail -- sailors killed in the racing accident on the farallon islands.

[ unintelligible ] the limit is 35 miles per hour watch out. so far, so good for the drivers. pg&e is telling customers they have until tomorrow to decide if they want to opt-out of having a smart meter that has created confusion among several customers who want to opt-out but can't afford to do so right now. pg&e is charging a $75 up-front fee plus $10 per month for any customer who wants to opt-out. after several complaints, the utility says may 1st, is not an actual firm deadline. customers can opt-out any time they say. critics have questioned the accuracy and safety of smart meters. the street party that kicks off the city's pride parade every year will look different. organizers of pink saturday say they are replacing the normal dance party with food trucks. the event celebrating the community is scheduled for june 23rd.
