good tuesday morning. thanks for joining us i'm eric thomas. and i'm kristen sze massive fire has killed one and injured another. this fire started after 2:45 this morning in a residential four-plex on the 2200 block of warfield way this went to three alarms it took firefighters at least half an hour to knock down. the victim was a woman in her 30s. authorities are saying little about the condition of the injured person. a third person was pulled from the burning home said to be okay now. five others managed to get out. we'll continue to follow this story out of san jose and bring updates as we get them on air and online at abc7news.com. >> ferries that normally sail from marin to san francisco will remain tied up because of

a strike by coalition of labor groups. terry mcsweeney joins us live with more information. >> reporter: this strike is expected to last until 2:00 this afternoon out of sausalito and larkspur. now word of a second bridge, bus and ferry union joining in on the strike details coming out later this morning. right now the ferry boats that won't be running, thousands will have to find another way to go, buses and cars are two options. the strike is organized by the golden gate bridge labor coalition representing 380 bridge, bus and ferry workers who have not had a contract since july. they say management is not bargaining in good faith especially over medical costs management says the same about unions and says wages and pension costs are also problems some passengers give meaning to the old phrase mellow marin. >> might have to drive in tomorrow, i work in the city. gas money you, you know it is

hour >> this morning the public will hear for the first time harsh words by former police keefe bats criticizing city leaders for how they handled the protests last fall. the interview is part of a new museum exhibit. katie marzullo is live in the newsroom. >> reporter: it is the oakland museum of california that has put together an exhibit called portrait interests the occupation. the former chief doesn't pull punches criticizing how the city and police handled the protests in october. video of one of the more violent clashes. the former chief in his interview also talked about how he would have handled things instead. keep in mind he resigned the day the occupation began last year. he says none of the top players in the city knew what they were doing. >> you had a rookie crew from the mayor to the city administrator to the chief at that point, dealing with the situation that they probably hadn't seen before national

protests not just oakland, but a national protest that was taking place from my point of view, i ask myself how i would have done things differently? you have to take more time and be more patient and look at what you have there. >> reporter: it is a double whammy for the police department. federal monitors are overseeing mandated changes in the department as part of a 2003 settlement over misconduct by four rogue officers. those monitors are dismayed, new report says while the department is getting better at disciplining officers it is not properly tracking use of force incidents among other things that's a snippet of what is in the report. this ahead of a massive may-day occupy protest nationwide. to watch the entire interview with the former chief go to abc7news.com click on see it on tv. katie marzullo, abc7 news. 5:05 now. hundreds of city workers vow

to return after storming san francisco's city hall to voice their contract demands. workers include custodians, librarians and health care workers their union is the only one that hasn't reached a new agreement with the city. union members delivered a letter to mayor lee last night outlining their demands. the city trying to fill a 170 million dollar deficit. the union is fighting proposed concessions. >> it will cost families not to be able to eat because the cost of the health care is raised so high. >> we are making it clear that they took away a lot of our -- a lot of our cheese and we may the mayor is full of baloney. >> union leaders claim only 10% of registered businesses pay payroll taxes. the an -- family and friends gathered last night at newark memorial high to honor the memory of 18-year-old osana futi. they held a bake sale to help with tune roll costs.

police say he died after being stabbed following a party saturday night. his aunt says he didn't run with any gangs. >> i met all his friends. and they weren't -- not those type of kids. you know, most of his friends came over to my house to hang out and stuff, i was never worried that he was in the wrong -- police arrested an 18-year-old on murder charges. three juveniles face charges of being accessories. medical marijuana dispensary in berkeley shutdown this morning surrendering to pressure from the justice department. the group closed because drug agents said it was within 600 feet of a pair of schools, a violation of state law, 69 employees will be laid off, 9,000 patients will have to find a new provider. officials say they haven't found a new building and may have to start up a delivery

who grew up and lived in hayward. police have made no arrest in the case. the opening of sailing season was celebrated sunday with a dignified parade of yachts. in tiburon, things turned ugly when a fight broke out onboard a boat. this video shows police trying to break up the fight. a group of uninvited guests jumped onboard nobody was seriously injured and nobody wanted to press charges. officers say it is one of the busiest days of the year. octomom has filed for bankruptcy. she says she is a million dollars in debt. she wants a fresh start and bankruptcy is what is best for her 14 children. the unemployed woman has been supporting her family with food stamps and social security disability payments. she has been in financial straits since before giving birth to octuplets in 2009.

among her debts she owes more than $30,000 in rent payments for her four bedroom house. if you think you have been searched unfairly by security screeners there's an app for that. the app created by silicon valley coalition offers travelers a way to record details of their screening this could be for nursing moms, people with disabilities it gives links to travelers' rights and screening grade lines and plans to add civil rights issues and school bullying in the future. an orphaned sea lion up is hours from going home. 10:30 this morning crews from the mammal center will take the sea lion to west marin and release it into the ocean. the 1-year-old has been named al catraz spotted on a dock at the old prison a month ago a

5:29 on this tuesday also the first day of may. thanks for joining us i'm kristen sze. i'm eric thomas. san francisco police are searching for the vandals who damaged mission police station and a dozen other businesses during a protest last night. amy hollyfield is live at the station with more on this story. >> reporter: we've driven around the mission this morning it looks better than it did last night. it looks like some businesses had late night cleaning up. this police station is still a mess. they cleaned up a little, the paint is gone that was splattered on the walls and the windows. you can see the windows are still broken. it want just buildings that the vandals attacked last night. they also went on a rampage against people's cars they smashed in several windshields

and splattered paint on people's cars we heard even an astin martin was vandalized. witnesses say it was a large group dressed in black that went on a rampage that lasted two hours from 9:00 to 11:00 last night. people who were watching said it was awful. >> i just work in this building and these guys walking on the street, when i look the window he's yelling when i opened the window i see my car writing on the top. i say hey that's my car! >> reporter: the mission police station actually put officers in riot gear out front to protect the station from any more damage last night. police did make one arrest. look this morning there's an officer stationed here outside keeping watch just in case. he's been here all morning. there was a peaceful gathering at delores park last night as part of the occupy movement. the people who organized that

say they were horrified and heartbroken to see this turn of events. they say they do not know who these people are. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. happening right now, service out of marin county cancelled on ferries because of labor strikes again the golden gate transportation district. a coalition of labor groups upset over stalled talks have announced plans to strike for the morning hours. larkspur and sausalito ferries are scheduled to resume service 2:00 this afternoon. terry mcsweeney will bring a live update from less than 30 minutes. in oakland, planned may-day protests could make getting around a challenge. here's what you need to know many the city has sent a letter to businesses warning them about potential traffic delays begin with the morning cute targeting downtown businesses during the early afternoon. there will be what is being called a march for dignity and

resistance 3:00 starting at fruitvale bart station that will be followed by a 6:00 rally at frank ogawa plaza outside of city hall. in an hour and a half, 4500 registered thursdays at eight bay area sutter hospitals will stage a one-day strike the third in a year long contract dispute. nurses say sutter is demanding unacceptable cuts. sutter says it is trying to rein in costs. the hospitals will stay open elective procedures are being rescheduled. sutter is bringing in replacement nurses on five-day contracts. the management says striking nurses will not be allowed to return until this weekend. in watsonville, investigation is underway after several barely escaped a hotel fire. 17 were injured, five critically burned. the stagg hotel in watsonville went up in flames 5:30 yesterday, within man jumped to escape the -- one man

[ inaudible ] it took firefighter an hour to put the blames out. -- to put the flames out. the cause is still under investigation. the hotel is a transitional facility for substance abuse patients undergoing treatment with others who are reentering society after doing jail time. in a few hours alameda county supervisors will meet to begin the process of if iing a seat left vacant by former supervisor nadia lockyer. she resigned april 20th, to focus on recovering from an abusive relationship with a former boyfriend and concentrate on raising her child. the board voted last tuesday to accept her resignation. they have 60 days to choose a

replacement to serve out the remainder of her term. warning for anyone who rides muni, pay your fare or face a $100 citation. the transportation agency is expected to adopt a new boarding policy. officials want to ask the board to consider amending the code to allow back-door boarding on all buses. right now riders are only allowed to board through the front. some sneak on through the back to snag a free ride. today the walnut creek city council will consider an ordinance that could impose new regulations on bars and restaurants that serve alcohol after hours. authorities working to combat violence on streets as it relates to late night bar scenes fights like this in 2010 have become increasingly common. a few months ago, three separate fights lead to nine arrests and several injuries, including two police officers. state water officials will take their final snow pack

>> closed captioning brought to you by mancini sleepworld. good morning it is 5:40 within. a hearing is scheduled in the continuing saga of suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi. the city attorney will attempt to obtain phone records from his former campaign manager to try to oust the suspended sheriff. the chronicle reports the judge has tentatively denied that request. meanwhile the district attorney tells us he's concerned about what he calls mirkarimi's shifting version of the domestic violence incident with his wife. gas gone talked with -- gascon talked exclusively. >> he talked about this fact occurred in a vehicle and he was trying to prevent -- protecting his son.

that is problematic for me, because we have plenty of evidence that would speak to a different set of circumstances. >> mirkarimi has been critical about the d.a.'s handling of the case and is currently fighting his suspension on official misconduct charges. today there will be a new patrol on duty along telegraph avenue a partnership between city police and uc berkeley campus police. officers from each department will team up to patrol the street in response to community concerns. new unit works telegraph avenue six days a week in the afternoons and evenings on foot and by bike. police say the new patrols address ongoing problems that cropped up and caused an increase in crime, among them several peeping incidents on the campus in recent months. remember those four baby falcons born on the roof of san jose city hall? today researchers are hoping to discover if they are buys -- if they are boys or girls.
