as you just mentioned this morning commuters in the north bay can expect a few thousand more people on the roads, extra vehicles belong to drivers who would normally be taking the ferry, something they can't do this morning. terry mcsweeney joins us live from the larkspur terminal to explain. >> reporter: a lot of people out here on strike. they are not keeping people out they are just letting you know they are here there is no ferry service into san francisco and there's none from sausalito into the city either. it is going to be coming back 2:00 this afternoon. then we are hearing there may be more disruptions later in the week. you can take a look at the i'd say close to 100 people carrying signs stopping people from going in and letting everybody know where they stand on this issue. they are going to be striking on this may-day organized by the golden gate bridge labor coalition representing 380

bridge, bus and ferry workers. they haven't had a contract since july. according to management, labor keeps shifting its stance, on what it wants on health care, wages and pension. talking to a union rep he says there's one major sticking point. >> they want to have families paying the most in terms of premiums and they want to burden those families the most. we provide a system where everyone pays the same amount but comes out with the same financial results that provide the district with the money they need to help pay for health care. >> reporter: service to sausalito expected to come back 10 to 2 this afternoon 2:15 restored at larkspur. 7:00 this morning an hour from now we are going to be hearing from the labor coalition i've been told not the specifics but it going to have to do with further disruptions in

either the ferry or bus service later this week. keep it here on abc 7 for that. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. 6:04. >> right now in san francisco, business owners, drivers even police in the mission district are preparing to cleanup after a violent protest last night. vandals broke windows, spray painted cars even targeted a police station, mission station officers believe a group of violent protesters broke away from a peaceful demonstration and went on a rampage. occupy protesters say the vandalism had nothing to do with them. police arrested one person. amy hollyfield will have a live reporting coming up. hundreds of city workers vow to return today after storming san francisco's city hall last night to voice contract demands. they have 13,000 members including custodians, librarians and health care workers the only union that has yet to reach a contract with the city.

last night union members delivered the mayor a letter outlining demands the city is trying to fill a 170 million dollar deficit and the union is fighting concessions. >> it will cost families not to be able to eat because the cost of the health care is being raised so high. >> we are making it cheer that they took away a lot of our chiefs -- a lot our cheese and we may the mayor is full of baloney. >> no one from the mayor's office would comment on the demonstration. oakland residents and visitors are being advised to expect all-day delays because of several major may-day protests planned today. starting 6:00 this morning, protesters are calling for commute disruptions up down -- uptown and downtown but haven't named specific sites between noon and 6 p.m. a major rally at frank ogawa plaza. at 3:00, a march at the

fruitvale bart station. also vowing unspecified actions against what they call the 1% across the city. we continue to follow breaking news from san jose, early morning fire has killed one and severely injured another. the fire started after 2:45 this morning in a residential four-plex on the 2200 block of warfield way it took firefighters half an hour to knock it down. the victim was a in her 30s. a second unidentified person is still listed in critical. one other person was rescued by firefighters and said to be okay. no word on a cause. residents say they believe in fire started in a garage turned out to be a three alarmer. we'll bring updates as we get them. do you hate those potholes in oakland? the city is kicking off its annual attack on those obstacles. crews will be out from now to late june conducting pothole

mission district last night. amy hollyfield is live at a police station on valencia where you can see some of the damage.laz?ñ >> reporter: witnesses say attacks appeared to be random, except for this one, they say it looked like they wanted to target police. they came to the mission and poured paint over the windows annuals they also broke windows of businesses and -- and cars all over the mission district this group of people dressed in black terrorized the neighborhood for two hours. they attacked a restaurant that was open and full of customers much to the disgust of the people who watched. >> i saw about 60 people walking around and they were anarchists all dressed in black saying all things against the government, against the police. >> don't know, i'm mad, cause you know we have nothing to do about that. it is not our fault.

>> reporter: they poured paint on her suv and broke the windows which will be an expensive fix. officers put on riot gear and guard the mission station from any further damage after attack happened. police did make one arrest. they say it was a large group of people. just who are these people? no one seems to know. there was a peaceful gathering at delores park of occupy protesters and they did start protesting the people that were part of that group say they don't know who these people are and they are heartbroken at the turn of events. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. in oakland, planned may-day protest cost make getting around a challenge. the city sent a letter to businesses warning them about potential traffic delays beginning with the morning commute. protesters will target downtown businesses in the early afternoon. then, protesters are planning a so call march for dignity and resistance at 3:00,

starting at fruitvale bart that will be followed by a 6:00 valley at frank ogawa plaza outside city hall. this morning the public will hear for the first time harsh words by former oakland police chief anthony batts criticizing city leaders for how they handled the protests last fall. the interview is part of a new museum exhibit. katie marzullo is live in the newsroom with more. >> reporter: the oakland museum of california has put together the exhibit, it is called portraits from the occupation. in it former police chief batts sits down to analyze and criticize how the city and police handled occupy protests in october this is video of one of the more violent clashes at frank ogawa the former chief who resigned the day the occupation began last year, says -- says the rookie city leaders took the wrong approach. >> the reality all you had is people sleeping on grass. you can replace grass, you can do those things over of the

that's no reason to move quickly. you take your time, use diplomacy, talk to people. the agency that trained me, i think did the best job in the nation which was lapd and how they handled their occupy situation. >> reporter: he said that's what the lapd did and had a good plan. since 2003 oakland pd has had a different problem, federal monitors overseeing changes in the department as part of a settlement over misconduct by four rogue officers. today the bay citizen is reporting the monitors are thoroughly dismayed. new report says officers are not correctly reporting why they stop residents, which could mean racial profiling. out of 77 use of force incidents investigated officers unnecessarily pulled their guns 15% of the time and their supervisors ruled it appropriate. the report reveals police receive more than 1,000 misconduct complaints, related to occupy. former chief talks about federal monitors in his

interview as well. he questions whether the process is addressing the city's problems. to watch the entire interview go to abc7news.com and click on see it on tv. katie marzullo, abc7 news. 6:36 now. less than 20 minutes from now an estimates 4500 registered nurses at eight bay area sutter hospitals will stage another one-day strike the third in nearly a year long contract dispute. the nurses say sutter is demanding unacceptable cuts in taffing, health benefits and sick days. sutter says it is trying to rein in skyrocketing costs. elective procedures are being rescheduled. sutter is bringing in replacements on five-day contracts meaning anyone who walks out today won't be allowed to return until sunday. a school teacher who accidentally struck and killed a 6-year-old girl in a crosswalk last september will not face criminal charges.

the -- the district attorney's office says it is tragic but no evidence to suggest a law was broken. the intersection is considered one of the most dangerous in the city and the city now considering tougher safety measures in response to calls from parents and residents. in the south bay this morning, fire investigators are trying to determine what lead to a blaze that injured teen people at a watsonville hotel. -- injured 17 people at a watsonville hotel. one man jumped from his second story window to escape the flames. police rescued another person from their window and neighbors came to the rescue. >> we heard somebody had a ladder they were able to bring out which helped bring down two of the other people in the upstairs buildings. >> it took firefighters an hour to put the flames out. they believe the fire started if the front office of the

>> i feel left out. jane king joins us with more on that. new signs of improvement in the bay area housing market. good morning. new report from clear capital says, san francisco, oakland, fremont area one of the better performing markets february to april compared to other cities with home prices in the area rising 1% compared to the previous three months. interesting about this, a third of the homes bought there were foreclosures, that is the trend now, metro areas with the highest saturation of foreclosures, like san francisco, phoenix and miami were the cities most likely to experience price gains because prices on foreclosures are rising up 6% compared to a year ago. pointing to the start of what may be a turn around in the housing market. this morning the dow, s&p, nasdaq, directionless, so far here today. a lot of world markets are closed for may-day. we have very little guidance
