erupts, police break out teargas and flash bang grenades, clearing out hundreds of protesters. >> sky 7hd is live over the city where there continues to be a strong police presence. >> good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm carolyn johnson. we have complete live team coverage of the day and night of clashes with police. >> sky 7hd is live over the city right now. it is deaf -- it is difficult to see exactly what is going on, but protesters are on the streets this may day, a day after clashes running through it is -- through the city with authorities. nick smith is live to begin our coverage tonight. nick? >> reporter: dan, i want to give you an how crazy things are. we just saw fights break out down the street. it looks like two men fighting down the street. this is one of the things officers had to deal with. there is still evidence of the demonstration that happened earlier. broken glass and broken containers on the street.
11:01 pm
you can still see officers across the street and near the bart station that is covered with graffiti. the demonstration started peaceful, but quickly turned as soon as night fell. look at some of the video that was shot earlier today. there were approximately 3,000 people at the plaza at the height of the demonstration. and by night fall most of the crowd has left. oakland police issued two order are -- orders to disperse. by this time the crowd shank to 300 people. -- shaw rank to 300 people. it was after the second warning from police that they started to move toward the officers and throw things, bottles, glass, liquids and paint. this officer was covered with what looked to be yellow paint. according to an opd spokesperson, he was one of several covered in pain or doused in a liquid tonight. officers ignited a flash grenade and removed the barricades they were carrying and gave the warning of their plans to use a chemical agent
11:02 pm
on the remaining demonstrators who were ig authorizing their orders to leave. this was a different crowd than those who are ma of earlier, and by most accounts were orderly. we saw some demonstrators clearly trying to pro vote -- clearly trying to provoke officers. these men were detained after officers say they were caught breaking the window and spray painting the building. again back here live, and the evening has been continuously fluid. what we tried to do is monitor where the crowds were. following the crowd when they moved from this section was my colleague laura anthony who is with me now. and then i want to let you know, laura come in here, we were covering the rest of the story. laura, i am going to happened -- hand it back to you. >> they set off the whole chain of events. let's show you what it looks like from our camera from the ground here this afternoon. police in riot gear cordoned
11:03 pm
off the intersection and then methodically pushed the demonstrators down broadway and to the north. anyone who did not follow police orders to disperse was quickly arrested. all the while police were pushing demonstrators down the street. at one point we saw demonstrators light a trashcan on fire that was quickly distinguished by police. the scene continues down broadway where they broke off to broadway and then headed toward the east where they shattered windows on two banks. the wells fargo still had a wrench embedded in the door, and we found several windows broken at the california bank and trust on 20th. finally the few demonstrators who last broke away from the police entirely, that's pretty much how it has been all night. police are regrouping and putting out hotspots of demonstrators as they find them. we have seen police in riot
11:04 pm
gear block off the intersection and try to move small groups of demonstrators in different directions. we can see them come back a short time later. at the moment, you can see it is relatively peaceful. in oakland, abc7 news. >> thanks very much. there has been rampant vandalism in oakland as you are gathering. protesters got to at least two police cars including one from fremont which had its windshield shatter -- shattered. anarchists hurled a box on a police car before setting it on fire. jonathon bloom is live at broadway and 17th where he saw several people, jonathon, being arrested tonight. >> reporter: that's right, dan. as you can see behind me, some of the man power police have brought in to perpetrate arrests, you can see the police officers have a bus here from the alameda county sheriff's department. they have quite a bit of man power and they are using the bus to conduct body searches
11:05 pm
of some of the people who they are taking into custody. the difference is there are protestors who are gathered near 17th and broadway, but many of them have dispersed. they have been trying to get them to dispurse by pushing them down the street in their police cars. we want to show you what happened about 20 minutes ago when a couple of people got into confrontations near the 17th and broadway intersection. once again police pushed them gradually, one corner at a time from the plaza. they eventually got them to 17th and broadway where they gave them an order to dispurse. that's when some people became a little unsettled and police had to take a couple of them down to the ground and arrest them. police were arresting people all over this area of oakland. they actually managed to arrest a lot of people before they actually ended up doing anything destructive. there were some fires police took out, but they took a
11:06 pm
divide and conquer approach. they would arrest people as if this were in progress, and then they would take people and handcuff them and wait for a large van or bus to pick them up and haul them off to jail in one fell swoop, basically. video from sky 7 shows just how dispersed this group was. this was sort of the plan. they dispursed the original group of 3,000 to 5,000 protesters, most of whom were here peacefully demonstrating. police essentially encouraged them to break off in all different directions and with a tremendous amount of man power they put out the fires, the literal ones and the figure tiff ones as the splinter groups acted up. as we come back here live, you can see the remaining group of protesters is beginning to break up. police officers are slowly securing this intersection and making their way out of downtown oakland as the protesters go their separate ways. jonathon bloom, abc7 news. >> thank you, jonathon.
11:07 pm
as you just saw, there were a number of arrests this evening. within the last hour oakland police held a briefing and provided the latest numbers. lisa amin gulezian is live for us with details. lisa? >> it is very true, carolyn. the chief briefed us about 30 minutes ago. he gave us a run down of exactly what happened tonight and why there were so many arrests. >> i was on private property over there in the parking lot and was asking the officer isn't this private property and is it okay if i am here? and he grabbed me. >> reporter: 23 people were arrested for things like failing to disperse and felonies like assaulting a police officer and arson. hundreds of officers dressed in riot gear lined up at 14th and broadway and moved the crowd north. they cleared the plaza and moved quickly down broadway making arrests along the way.
11:08 pm
>> i perm personally -- we heard a countdown and gave the five-minute countdown. we gave them an area where we had to leave. and at that point, i made a decision to authorize the officers to make arrests for those that they can who did not leave. >> the goal was to thin out the crowd which did happen. at one point we were warned that gas or other chemicals could be used in the crowd. that did not happen. we did see one trashcan beset on fire. it is not clear who ignited that flame. officers say the entire situation turned volatile at about 8:30. that's when an officer tried to arrest someone in the crowd who had a restraining order against them. and at that point police say about 300 people got involved and started throwing things at officers, things like paint, bottles and other debris. back here live now, and we have learned that the chief was monitoring all of tonight's events through streaming video that he was getting from officers. there were actually three
11:09 pm
officers that were wearing the remote camera backpacks and sending video back to him live. we are live in oakland, lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. >> thanks, lisa. well, this day began with a warning from oakland police to people and businesses downtown about what this may day might bring. and it certainly did. before the demonstrations began, some oakland businesses went into defensive mode. this bank of america in downtown boarded up its windows. oakland police report minor vandalism here. an abc7 news captured video of a group of people storming a bank of the west on broadway. it caused some minor damage and throwing around paper. >> we need you to clear the intersection. >> but it urn ited tense around noon with a confrontation between police and demonstrators around 14th and broadway. a woman on a bike was tackled to the ground, handcuffed and taken away. police declared the demonstration an unlawful assembly and ordered the crowd to disperse.
11:10 pm
the clashes escalated with police using a taser on at least one person and officers being splashed with paint. in an effort to control the crowd, they set off at least one flash grenade and use teargas on three occasions. then a large contingent of police officers cordoned off another intersection. they were accompanied by a huge armored vehicle from the alameda county sheriff's department. the goal seemed to be to push demonstrators north. from there we were in the midst of the march by about 1500 protesters as they headed up international boulevard for the rally at the plaza. so that gives uh time line on what has occurred up to this moment. as you look over oakland at broadway and 17th, you can see protesters and police there. it has been a long, anxious might in oakland. we will continue to follow what is happening in that part of the bay area. but we will move on to another part of the bay area now.
11:11 pm
protestors are standing their ground tonight. thisy remain holed up in what was a vacant building. this is the same building where earlier this evening a protestor climbed to the roof and tossed bricks and metal pipe on to the crowd below. john alston is there live with the latest for us. john? >> carolyn, more than 200 protesters at one point, all quiet now. most have backed off. a few officers are here standing guard. an unknown number of protestors are still in the building behind me and trying to make it their new encampment. their protest got off to a violent start. >> the corner was a dangerous place to be. after taking over a vai can't building -- a vacant building, a protestor climbed on the roof hurling hunks of metal, pipes and bricks over and over again. several bricks were aimed at officers on turk street, but the only person hurt appeared to be one of the demonstrators who was hit in the face according to police. the suspect from the roof was taken into custody when he
11:12 pm
left the building. police arrested jesse nesbit in san francisco for felony aggravated assault on a police officer. police won't say if they will let the protestor stay in the building overnight. >> currentsly we have sufficient staffing to monitor the overall venue tonight. i am in charge of that. it was my determination it was efficient to maintain public safety. >> the riot police left the area. one protestor was disappointed that they were attacked from the roof. >> i think that's horrible. but that does not represent the occupy. >> a businessman from new york questioned the protests. >> i am here for workathathatha
