for an armed suspect who they say shot at a deputy's vehicle. residents got a recorded phone message warning them to lock all windows and doors until at least 6:00 this morning. the suspect has not yet been identified. we'll bring updates as we get them. police and firefighters are investigating a crash that left a big mess outside a millbrae safeway. the driver says he fell asleep near the intersection before slamming his car into several trees, shopping carts, fire hydrant and the wall of the store of the the store wasn't damaged. the driver was taken to a nearby hospital. police are checking to see if alcohol played a factor in the crash. major cleanup underway in oakland after violent and destructive clashes between police and protesters broke out yesterday. police just released new

figures of how many arrested. terry mcsweeney is live in downtown oakland. >> reporter: 25 people arrested, one for felony assault on a police officer. two for arson. many of the others failure to disperse. i'm here at 14th and broadway, frank ogawa plaza this is the hangover after last night's violent gathering. you can see the plywood in front of the footlocker it didn't save the windows, a lot of graffiti all over this section of oakland. right now video of what was left in a window in this area, a wrench, right through the window. police cars trashed. one was torched. all of this the result of dozens of violent protesters who made up 10% of the 3,000 or so who came out to demonstrate on may day. most had gone home by night fall that is when about 9:00 police issued orders for them

to disperse after the second order the demonstrators threw bottles, glass and paint at police officers and elsewhere. officers moved in and made arrests. >> i was on private property in the parking lot and was asking the officers -- [ inaudible ] >> reporter: police moved the crowd away from the plaza making arrests as they went. we heard the woman tell her side of her arrest story. oakland pd may have good evidence of their side of many of these arrests. several officers had remote cameras on their backs so they could record what was going on and document what happened out here. something that you see here and a lot of places after violence is the circle a, the international sign of anarchy. many of the people who find

themselves destroying various parts of oakland and san francisco, believe that anarchy is the way to go and it is a philosophy that they espouse. right now all is quiet there is still a big mess. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. the violence that resulted last night started coming to a boil at about noon yesterday. police declared the demonstration at 14th and broadway an unlawful assembly. they ordered the crowd to disperse. police used a taser on one and set off a flash bang grenade and used tear gas. earlier in the day there was minor damage as protesters stormed a bank and threw paper. police say an estimated 3,000 took part in marches and rallies in oakland yesterday and the vast majority did so

peacefully. may day protesters in san francisco still in a stand off with police now after occupying a vacant building. the mostly peaceful protest turned violent when one man threw pipes from a roof. another man was arrested for felony assault for allegedly throwing bricks. one man in the crowd reported to be an occupy protester himself had a minor injury. amy hollyfield is following report in our next half hour. this morning golden gate ferry service should be back to normal following a half day labor strike. we were there live yesterday morning as workers picketed the larkspur ferry terminal. service was suspended from sausalito and larkspur to san francisco until the afternoon. workers are locked in a labor dispute with the transportation district. stay with abc7 news for the latest we'll bring developments during the

newscast and get updates any time of day at abc7news.com. former san francisco sheriff on the list of witnesses the city plans to call before the ethics commission against suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi. the city claims the former sheriff michael hennessey will testify about communications with mirkarimi on his acts of domestic violence. mirkarimi's campaign manager will also be questioned about phone calls made to a key witness that would be mirkarimi's neighbor ivory madison. >> you are thinking it is a communication trying to dissuade miss madison? >> at this point, that what we believe. we are interested in hearing about her possession on that. >> mirkarimi's attorney says the mayor's witness list seems like to create a circus atmosphere. mirkarimi's list comes out next week. the san jose city council is deadlocked on the mayor's effort to reduce retirement

benefits to most future city hires. the plan calls trimming benefits beginning july 1st, for all city workers except police and firefighters. the 5-5 vote last night came up short. san jose's proposed budget begins with a surplus of nine million dollars. the managers proposed budget would operate four new libraries and new community center. it keeps 21 school crossing guards on duty staffs a state park and provides police with two million dollars for gang prevention. we find out today whether cal-state faculty members approved a strike. the leaders of california's three higher education systems are predicting future economic doom if the state doesn't restore college funding soon. the executives of the uc, cal-state and community colleges say they support the governor's tax plan that plan

would include hikes on people who make a quarter of a million dollars a year or more. school officials are urging lawmakers to cut spending on prisons. bars, clubs and restaurants in walnut creek are about to face new rules. a council approved a controversial new ordinance requiring the businesses to follow specific alcohol regulations. if they don't, those businesses could have their hours of operation cut or closed down. the law is meant to give the city a way to go after and shutdown problem establishments opponents say it violates their rights. the law comes after several reports of drunken violence at several downtown hot spots. we started the week warm then baby steps down. >> no hot spots this morning, cool spots. >> absolutely, cooler weather this morning. good morning. we have breezes blowing in there's a small wind chill, doppler dry may not basketball

coast and north bay a few scattered showers for all of us tomorrow warmer weather begins friday through the weekend. good morning. accident-wise looking good around the bay area. roadwork on the peninsula 101 both directions through palo alto, lanes blocked until 5:00 this morning. looks like they are starting to clear and open the lanes now to clear that roadwork there. is slowing in both directions. i can show with you the waze traffic app that it looks lake they are picking it up, one of the traffic spotters reported a standstill 18 minutes ago. usually when they start to clear the lanes they sometimes stop traffic that was 18 minutes ago there's still slowing through the scene. everything should be cleared by 5:00, looks like they are picking up the construction now. elsewhere, i want to take you to contra costa county looking good southbound 680 walnut creek towards highway 24 as you head towards danville from
