6:02 am
how many were in there so far we've seen half a dozen. video we shot about an hour ago when police arrived a couple dozen of them in their riot gear some had batons drawn, all had helmets on, sealeds out, they were ready for a struggle -- shields out, they were ready for a struggle, but did not have one, no tear gas had be fired no one put up resistance they say this went down smoothly and easy yesterday they had a couple of protesters on the roof throwing things, bricks and chunks of metal to the ground aiming at police officers. they ended up hitting a protester on the ground. police did make one arrest in that situation and promised they would protect the public from these people and get these people out. these two buildings are owned by the catholic church, they are empty. the church has said they don't want these people in here.
6:03 am
these people have done this before, about a month ago and caused $25,000 worth of damage. protesters say they believe people have a right to take over empty buildings, making a statement about the housing crisis in our country now. police disagree saying this is trespassing and are currently making their arrests. that area is blocked off, wide city blocked by police officers traffic here is impacted. i just checked in with the officers to find out about how long this would be going on because of course gough is a major thoroughfare for people trying to get to the highway. he's estimating about 45 minutes but paused and had to think about that so he's not sure this may impact your morning commute to get more details on how to get around we are going to toss it to frances dinglasan. >> a lot of folks use gough head to 101 southbound towards 101. here's amy at the scene of gough and turk.

6:06 am
even so there's plenty of damage. terry mcsweeney will join that side of the story at 6:30. thousands of nurses who work at eight bay area hospitals plan to end a one-day strike this morning but won't be allowed to go back to work until sunday. 4500 nurses walked out to protest cuts. sutter says the demands will increase patients' costs by millions. sutter brought in replacement nurses on five-day contracts to keep the hospitals open. that means the striking nurses will be locked out until sunday. stay with abc7 news for the latest on this still developing story. you can also get updates any time at abc7news.com. minutes ago secretary of state hillary clinton issued a statement about the u.s. role in the case of the blind chinese activist who sought refuge in the u.s. embassy in beijing. clinton says u.s. actions were
