closed captioning by closed captioning services,inc san francisco police and deputies in riot gear rush into a building taken over by occupy protesters yesterday. they made dozens of arrests and cleared out the building. major cleanup underway downtown after a group of protesters went on a rampage and fought with police. good morning i'm cheryl jennings. and i'm kristen sze terry mcsweeney is in oakland. >> we begin with amy hollyfield. >> reporter: police arrested

26 people. we've been meeting with some as they've been released. they tell us they envisioned creating a homeless shelter in the building they took over yesterday. police shattered those dream this morning. from the outside it looked like it was going to be an aggressive attack, dozens of san francisco police officers wearing riot gear, carrying shields and batons at 5:00 in the morning moved in on a building filled with protesters. those inside say it was calm. >> one walked in and it was like how many people are in here? it was not like busting down doors, , at all. >> reporter: kgo radio reporter jenna lane was in the building interviewing protesters when police came in. she was detained for two hours along with everyone else inside and then released. she was able to record some of the officer's voices as the eviction started.

>> at one time i heard one officer say something like all you have to do is stay right there that was about as tense as it got. >> reporter: police did not have to use force, no one resisted arrest. they prepared for violence because of what happened yesterday. two protesters stood on the roof at turk and gough and threw bricks and metal pipe to the ground hitting one demonstrators. police only made one arrest. >> the operation conducted in the early morning hours to minimize impact to public safety. >> reporter: the catholic church owns the two buildings. this is the second time this has happened. >> we are going to review security and see that we can keep them out. i really hope the protesters get it at some point. >> reporter: as some of the protesters were released from jail they told us they felt good about what they did. >> we were able to house individuals who needed housing that night. we were able to safety and security for those being housed.

>> reporter: he did not want to give us his name. police tell me some are getting a citation and released. others will be booked. they are still sorting out the who and why? one option is whether they can charge someone with a more serious offense if this is their second time to do this. those who did this in april and again yesterday, may face a more serious consequence. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. abc7 news reporter terry mcsweeney took a close-up look at the damage in oakland. >> reporter: now you can see some of it for yourself this is the california bank and trust, 20th street and franklin, large windows knocked out last night. very few buildings were hit this bank was the bank up the street the demonstrators were very selective and very destructive. the light of day ushered in cleanup time at this wells fargo bank on franklin. some windows spared, some

taken out this picture fromwyaú last night shows how within window was smashed with a wrench. at the california bank and trust -- more and larger windows busted atm machines smashed at both locations. wells fargo issued this statement: some of the businesses that were spared including this burger king may have been saved by their clear statement of support for the occupy movement. they store had a similar sign in its window. some of the crowd were intent on damaging something after day of on and off violence a crowd of 300 assembled at frank ogawa and were edging closer to spiralling out of control according to police. >> we gave them a time and area when they had to leave at

that point i made the decision to authorize arrests. >> reporter: all told 25 were realized, one for felony assault on a police officer, two for arson one of those for torching a police car. >> in my opinion, they should not be violence. issues should be addressed peacefully. >> people should act more civilized and have better common sense than taking their actions out on the city of oakland. it is ridiculous. >> reporter: several officers were wearing backpack remote cameras sending live pictures to the command center where the chief watched some of this unfold as it happened. in reason riots it has been the demonstrators who had the cameras now the shoe is on the other foot it is going to be interesting to see how this place out. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. stay with abc7 news for the latest on the protest

have seen something to call them. overseas, conflicting accounts as to whether a blind chinese activist holed up in the u.s. embassy really wants to day in china or leave? chen emerged from the embassy today the u.s. embassy, under an agreement with chinese officials allowing him to receive medical care and be reunited with his family. a japanese news channel captured this footage of the activist wheeled into the hospital. chen says he only left the embassy after a u.s. official told him that chinese authorities were threatened to beat his wife to death. he says he fears for his safety and wants to leave the country. u.s. officials have denied knowledge of any threat to chen's family. the taliban is threatening more violence on the one year anniversary of the death of bin laden in back stan attacks have already started following -- in pakistan attacks have already started following

mark zuckerburg unveiled the new feature that allows people to sign up to become an organ donor. more than 100,000 users have added their donor status. in california online donor registrations are up 1300%. >> such a great service and very much needed. we have a different status update the "wall street journal" says facebook will make its public stock offering may 18th. the company is trying to raise five billion dollars bringing the total val company to 100 billion dollars. facebook will begin what is called a show next week meeting with investors to create interest in the stock. facebook will trailed on the nasdaq under the symbol fb.
