an eighth grader beaten by gang bangers in this neighborhood park has died. >> and tonight police are asking any and all witnesses and there may have been many to come forward. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm carolyn johnson. it is a developing story, and tonight we are hearing reports that the boy's father may have witnting. 14-year-old eddie reyes was beat. it is a place they call a known gang hangout.

reyes was in eighth grade.arolyd >> carolyn and dan, good evening. police are saying the death of a 14-year-old eighth grader is indeed gang-related. the school officials are calling it a loss to the community. >> he was attacked and severely beaten. >> cops are looking at any information into the beating death of an eighth grade student in east san jose. investigators say most of those who witnessed it left the scene before police arrived. 14-year-old reyes was transported to the hospital where he remained for the weekend. he would later die from his injuries. our media partner is reporting that as the boy was being beaten, the boy's father stood nearby, putting the boy in a fight for his life that ended tragically. >> we believe the case is gang motivated. it is an area known for a high level of criminal street activity. >> cops won't say if they were ate with the he was able toe identify his attackers, but police say they are actively

found dead this morning by his girl friend in his beach front home in san diego county. he had a single gunshot wound to the chest. histricken m grief-stricken motd today that he seemed perfectly fine the last few days. >> i don't understand who do this to to my son, but i pray to god, please, take me. take me, leave my son, but it's too late. it's too late. >> seau retired in 2009 after 20 seasons in the nfl, most with the chargers. the 12-time pro bowler is considered one of the greatest line backers in nfl history. 49ers head coach jim harbough played with seau in san diego and said, quote, i along with the entire nfl family, the san diego community and those who shared a life with junior grieve the loss of the ultimate friend. >> the suicide is raising questions about the mental health of nfl players who often suffer multiple

concussions and repeated head trauma. even if it is not a natural concussion it can cause deterioration of the brain. ama dates has a closer look at this issue. ama? >> carolyn, the neuro psychologist i spoke with says nfl players have an increased risk for brain deterioration because of the head trauma they suffer, but it is too early to know if it is what lead to junior seau's death. news of junior seau's death spread quickly through the football community. >> it is hard today. it is hard to think about, and it makes me want to spend the day reaching out to my teammates and making sure they are okay. >> the medical community is also paying close attention to seau's apparent suicide. >> it is a tragic event, and it is very early to speculate, but it raises concern. >> he is a neuro psychologist at the memory center in walnut creek. he says chronic traumatic encephalopathy happens when there is repeated injury to

the brain. >> they expect that through the repeated trauma the brain cells break down and released these proteins. these proteins become toxic in n the brain and cause the cells to dysfunction and eventually die. >> that leads to symptoms associated with dementia and emotiona symptoms like depression. >> i heard reports of severe pair no i yaw, suicidal thoughts , and there are concerns that some of these athletes that have committed suicide may have been a result of the symptoms of cte. >> cte can be diagnosed, but not confirmed until the brain is autopsied. last year former bears player dave dowerson texted his family that he wanted his brain used for research. he then shot himself in the chest to preserve his brain. after his deat confirmed he suffered a neuro degenerative disease linked to concussions. seau was also found with a gunshot wound to the chest. a 49er offensive lineman says the league needs to do

something to ensure the health of the players. >> the league needs to stop looking at this from a liability standpoint and take charge and realize that they can be a driving force to create a game that is safe not only on the nfl level, but the collegiate level and even the high school and youth levels. >> carolyn lynch told me he pledged to donate his brain for scientific research. >> thank you. larry beil will join us in about 20 minutes with an interview with former 49er brent jones who spent time with seau just two weeks ago. a lab researcher at the v.a. medical center died suddenly over the weekend of meningitis. it was the very bacteria he was manipulating in experiments for vaccine research. the lab assistant came dop with flu-like symptoms and died 16 hours later of overwelming blood stream infection. the v.a. and osha are investigating the death and they say all precautions were taken including the use of a bio safety cabinet with

separate ventilation. >> everyone else that, woulded in the lab -- that worked in the lab said he was a phac tid yous person. there was noedge that he made mistakes previously. we think it was aastating and rare event. the lab was closed and decontaminated. >> 70 friends and health care workers in contact with him are taking antibiotics to keep from meningi developing meningi. the lab was decontaminated and remains closed. traffic is moving after a car fire in the past hour. a bridge camera shows the car burning. you can see it on the upper deck. heavy smoke is coming from the engine. traffic was stopped until they could get the fire out and then towed the car away. they released new arrest numbers from the oakland may day protests. officials say 39 people were taken into custody during the mostly peaceful protests. thousands of demonstrators were involved in the marches and the strikes yesterday. the city officials say only a

small group provoked confrontations and created vandalism. most of the arrests were for obstruction of justice or failing to dispurse. five people were arrested on more serious charges including battery andding san francisco police arrested more than two dozen people at a predawn raid. one is this man, 34-year-old jesse nesbit. he is accused of throwing bricks and metal pipes from the buildin police are police are still looking for a demonstrate you are -- demonstrator who was hit if the face. police moved in to clear the building and in all 26 people were arrested, most living outside the city. a state senator is demanding answers from the federal government into something called meat glue. as a result of abc7 our abc7 nee is a binder used to create what looks like a prime cut of steak from scraps. here is dan noyes with the latest developments. >> this is the center of the

controversey, what the i team first revealed last week. the meat industry admits that thats use the meat glue to bind pieces of meat that would normally be thrown away into complete steaks. ted lou is concerned that the consumers don't know what they are being served. >> and there is straight forward honesty and a right to know. i think it is important that consumers know what it is they are eating. >> t >> they ask the usda food safety and inspection service to investigate. he makes these points. combining different meat parts from different animals makes it far more difficult to trace what caused the food illness. if a tbliewed steak -- glued steak is not thoroughly cooked it can be contaminated and cause sickness to the consumer. and there are stories of trans glue taminase. itallergic or other allergic orr reactions in unwary consumers. lou told us he believes a glued steak ought to come with a label, even at a restaurant.
