three hours ago. their message is clear. they will not tolerate any problems, and neither will the community. ♪ >> lisa: this is a cinco de mayo many in san jose want. a familyfestival. they don't want this. a repeat of last year. when a mob in east san jose broke windows, vandalized property, and even surrounded police. they knocked an officer off his bike and stabbed a teenager. >> is your district going to be safe? >> absolutely. >> lisa: the city councilman happened organize the festival in the same area that has been plagued with problems. his spokesperson insists this year will be different. >> the gang tension is high right now. nonetheless, like i said, we have been in communication with the police department, and we have full confidence that

they're going to keep everything they have been hearing under control. >> lisa: the plan tonight is to have even more officers on horseback, motorcycles, and in cars, and most of the department will be working a night shift. as for gang suppression, roughly 60 teenage gang members have been taken out of up to on a retreat in hopes of minimizing any retaliatory attacks tonight. also, no parking or stopping will be allowed on santa clara street. >> enough officers working and we can always call for mute mutual aids. >> tonight business oregons are -- owners are getting ready, using cones and caution tape. >> we can't operate a business being worried. >> we want to stay away from downtown wind. we know it's going to be hard to get home tonight. >> as you can see the streets are starting to get a bit more

crowded. the celebration started last night so did the arrest 21 people were arrested yesterday for things like disturbing the peace, resisting arrest, and position of a deadly weapon. live in san jose, lisa amin gulezian, abc-7 news. >> ama: and in another effort to keep cinco de mayo festivities safe. the police will be operating sobriety checkpoints in salinas, napa, and san francisco. >> alan: the east palo alto police department took dozen of illegal guns eave the street, holding its fourth annual gun buyback. people turn in 74 guns and department gave them $100 for each working weapon. the program began number 2009 in response to the accidental shooting death of a two-year-old by a 12-year-old who found a rifle in a garage. to date more than 200 finals have been bought through the

a second man is believed to be involved. they robbed the spa, the employees, and took off with the worker vehicles, a white van and a black honda civic. >> ama: the self-proclaimed master mind of the 9/11 attacks was arraigned at a tribunal. caw lead shake mohammed is facing charges. >> reporter: this is called camp justice, and it is here that sheikh mohammed and four codefendants went before a military charge, each charged with 2,976 counts of murder for the terror attacks of september 11th. mohammed wore a white turn temperature ban and tunic. the two tried to upset the hearing by taking out their ear plugs providing translation. the judge said they won't be allowed to sabotage the proceedings. family members of 9/11 victims

>> alan: president obama officially launched his bid for re-election today with a campaign stop in ohio. >> my opponent won't tell us how he paid for his new tax cut. a tack cut that gives an average of $250,000 to every millionaire in this country. >> alan: the president criticized republican mitt romney'sstance on the economy and told a crowd at ohio state university that america has had a tough time rebounding from a deep recession. but he says it's come too far to turn back now. later he spoke at a college in virginia. west virginia and ohio are seen as critical states in the election. meanwhile, supporters of mitt romney are mobilizing in ohio. setting up a mobile call center at ohio state university. just yesterday, romney met his former rival, rick santorum, who dropped out of the race a month ago. details on what the two discussed were not released. romney hired santorum's former

>> alan: jerry sandusky may be facing more charges of abuse. recently filed court documents suggest there are at least 17 people who are accusation sandusky of molesting them. he is currently facing more than 50 counts involving ten boys dating back to 1994. the attorney general's office declined to comment on the most recent findings. sandusky has pleaded not guilty. >> ama: dozens of people in the hospital after gas-filled balloons exploded during a political rally in are moon -- armenia. you can see the fire ball on their screen. it sent panicked people running for safety. reports thatsome someone lit a cigarette and that ignited balloons filled with hydrogeneral. 150 people were hurt. >> alan: japan is without nuclear power for the first time in four decades. the last reactor on the northern island ohokado, went offline for routine maintenance. none of the country's nuclear

>> ama: people in the bay area who lost loved ones to tie -- violence took part in a walk in san leandro. this is the third annual two-mile walk held by the organization, 1,000 mothers to prevent violence. the group's founder knows the pain of violence first hand. lower rain taylor's twin sons were murdered 12 years ago. >> we get together through raise awareness as the community to the ongoing need for services for families and friends of homicide victims, especially the children. >> ama: the walk is also a way for people to find support and help them heel. >> alan: three world war ii pilots helped celebrate the 70th anniversary of an historic raid on toke -- toke yoavment they took off from the air craft carrier hornet.
