eye never railed how brave firefighters were until i watched them today. >> and five are hurt battling a nasty fire. >> all of a sudden somebody started yelling, get out, get out, fire and then the window started breaking and the flames started shooting out. >> the flames took minutes to burn years of memories. good evening. i'm alan wang. >> and i'm ama dates. the fire tore through an apartment building in mission district at valencia street. lilian kim is there with the latest. >> the damage to the building is quite extensive. the fire is believed to have started behind this liquor store that sits on the ground floor. it is night boarded up. the apartment units are burned out or have smoke and water damage. and because of is that, about

three dozen people are without a home. big smoke started pouring down out of this apartment building around 10:00 a.m. the heat was so intense, but passersby were told to back away.f a sudden the flames came out, and we could feel it in our face. >> the fire reached four alarms. they first attacked the flames from the street, and then they quickly worked into the building to fight the fire from inside. many people were in their units when the flames broke out including tabitha russell who moved in eight months ago. >> flames were pouring through our kitchen window. i just ran out and grabbed what i could. >> he quickly cleared out his customers and then ran upstairs to save the family. >> my mom started screaming. i carry her down. >> investigators say the fire

started at the bottom of a light well behind a liquor store behind the unit. five firefighters were injured. one hurt his foot while another cut hit hand. none of the injuries are life-threatening. 37 of the people in the build ring home lis including seven children. the american red cross distributed food,g and clothingd vouchers, enough to last for days. >> i feel so sad for them. i have five kids and that's for me. >> there was at least one tenant who was injured. a woman was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. but she is expected to be just fine. live in san francisco, lilian kim, abc7 news. >> thank you, lilian. a father and son are being called hire rows after -- heros after they res skyed two people from a home. when firefighters arrived the

house was fully involved. neighbors ran to the house and pulled a man to safety. then they braved the flames and went after his 96-year-old mother. >> i picked her up and carried her out. she was hurt. she was old and kind of crippled, so i know i probably blee wasn't too gentle, but was just trying to get her out of there and over the trees and bushes and over to our house. we kept passing her back and forth. >> wow. the fire started from embers in a paper bag left over from a fire in the fireplace. a fire broke out in a condo minute yum in san jose this rch a. one of our news photographers lived near there and captured a cell phone video of the fire. it started around 2:30 and gutted one home, but they stopped it from spreading to any other con doze. nobody was home, but unfortunately one dog died at the fire.

investigators don't know what sparked it. and quick thinking. a pilot landed in the bay. he was unable to extse gear on nose gear on his plane as he approached palo alto airport. he splashed into the bay. fortunately for him he had an amphibious plane. >> an oakland police officer was recovering. he was wounded this morning after exchanging gunfire with an armed suspect. the suspect later died of his wounds. thomas roman has more. >> i hear shots quite often. i never heard any close to me. >> it came from four houses down from her home here on the 9200 block of birch in east lobing -- in east oakland. he chased the suspect from 90th and international boulevard. >> i just heard the shots. i shut my windows and i was afraid that somebody will be running from the police or run into my house. >> police officers tried to stop three men on

a woman died after she was hit by a small truck in san francisco. it happened on masonic avenue near euclid and gary boulevard. po victim was crossing outside of a crosswalk when she was hit. the driver stopped and remained at the scene and police haven't cited him. the victim appeared to be in her 20s and died after being rushed to san francisco general hospital. 93,000 unemployed californians are about to receive some bad news. the federal long-term benefits are about to extire. expire. they will join 670,000 other jobless californians whose benefits have run out. a drop in the unemployment rate which is the lowest mark in three years is triggering
