>> announcer: right now breaking news. happening now. investigators may have a new break in the search for missing morgan hill teenager sierra lamar. they've identified a car in connection with the case. good morning i'm kristen sze. and i'm cheryl jennings. karina rusk is live at the sheriff's department. >> reporter: i have just talked to see 's mom. what she told me is this is a powerful lead in the search for her daughter. -- investigators have a carve interest in the disappearance

of 15-year-old sierra. the biggest break so far. and the detectives need the public's help. we have an image of the car you are looking at similar to what they are looking for. mid 90s red volkswagon jetta, four doors, black hood. detectives say video and witness statements lead them to believe this car was involved in disappearance of sierra la marseillaise. 16th. >> we are -- we are not going to specify the number of video surveillance that west it is more than one source. these -- that we have in the case it is more than one source, during the time. we can give the specific number because it is still an open investigation. >> reporter: the 15-year-old was last seen at home getting ready for school. detectives do not believe she made it to the bus stop. investigators say the car was

not only spotted near her home also in the area where sierra's cell phone and her purse were found. they will not say whether anyone was seen throwing those items from the car or how many people the surveillance video showed in that red jet her mom told me the family has seen a picture -- picture of the car and did not recognize the vehicle. again sie5mí since mar of 16th. there have been regular volunteer community searches led by the klaas kids foundation. this is the biggest break so far. investigators also revealed today that they have received lab analysis on two evidentiary items that we have been following, a book marked handcuffs and two used condoms. they say they are not related to the case. if you have any information on this red jetta, or sierra's disappearance, we have all the

information to contact investigators on abc7news.com, see it on tv. karina rusk, abc7 news. we have a huge mystery in the east bay overû a gas smell that caused a school to evacuate. katie marzullo joins us from the high school what is pg&e saying? >> reporter: a pg&e representative just showed up at the school not moments ago they have not found any leaks, it is not any work pg&e is doing and the smell has dissipated. they also know the smells did not come from the high school, although it did cause a disruption this morning. residents throughout walnut creek and alamo were met with a strong and scary smell this morning, around 8:00, the smell of natural gas prompted 100 complains to the fire department and evacuation of the high school.

>> it is a standard drill we do throughout many times in the school year. >> reporter: 1500 people between students and faculty. >> it was strong. we weren't sure where it was coming from. we called pg&e and we also called the fire department to come out during the evacuation the fire department came out and determined that the smell was not coming from the school site. >> reporter: a haz-mat special list says part of the -- specialist says part of the reason the smell was so pungent was the weather. >> any small releases of natural gas that could occur will stay in the area. >> reporter: students were allowed back in class after 20 minutes. pg&e will continue looking for the cause of this natural gas smell.

katie marzullo, abc7 news. this morning walnut creek police on the hunt for four people who burst into a home held them at gunpoint and ransacked the house. it began after midnight, two women approached the house from the backyard and asked to use the phone. when one resident turned to get a phone two men appeared and one was holding a handgun. the four robbers ordered the residents inside forced them to lion the floor and ransacked the -- to lie on the floor and ransacked the home. police have made no arrests. a group of protesters occupying a tract of land in albany are hoping to avoid a police raid. police told protesters they were there illegally. the group took over the tract april 22nd. it is a 10 acre plot owned by university california berkeley and used for research. saturday deadline to clear the land came and went without movement from either side.

both sides say they are weighing their options. right now in sacramento, the late vallejo police officer jim capoot is one of several law enforcement officers honored for making the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. he was shot and killed november of last year by suspected bank robber he was chasing. this morning a procession of police cars made its way to the state capital for the special recognition ceremony. this year's event is honoring 10 officers killed in the line of doubt day across the state. today al-qaeda has released new video of 70-year-old american aide worker kidnapped nine months ago in pakistan. the video was posted on several militant websites. the hostage warren weinstein is heard saying he will be killed unless president obama agrees to several al-qaeda demands, among them a halt to all us air strikes in afghanistan, pakistan, somalia and yemen and release of all al-qaeda and taliban suspects

another top obama administration official is voicing support today for same-sex marriage. arne duncan told an inviewer he believes same-sex couples should be allowed to marry following similar support expressed by vice president biden this past weekend.
