superintendent cancelled testing and brought in four times as many counselors as they usually have. they are here to talk to the students but mostly to listen. teachers arrived early today for a special 8 a.m. meeting to discuss the death of an 8th grader and how to handle her grieving classmates. >> i think they are going to be nervous. we are in this business of educating and keeping kids safe. unsettled. >> it is hard. the unknown now of what happened. >> reporter: the unknown is adding to the difficulty of the day. police say they won't know whether this was a murder-suicide or double homicide until they get forensic test and autopsy results. they did fan a handgun at the scene and reassured neighbors. >> the police didn't tell me what happened. i asked them if it was safe? they told me, yes. >> reporter: some parents say

13-year-old on facebook are stirring each other up. one mother told us her child didn't want to go outside. administrators say they will do their best to keep everyone calm. >> let them know that there's maybe a lot of information out there, but that it is not really our job to decipher that. we go with the facts. >> reporter: administrators turned the library too a counseling center today where students can come and talk about 13-year-old an inch even though she and her family just moved here a few months ago from kansas the 8th grader had already made quite an impression. >> she acclimated herself beautifully and hanging around a nice group of girls, top student, top grades. >> reporter: ainsley and her mom, amy burton were found shot to death inside their home last night. amy's husband found them. police say he's been cooperative and is not considered a suspect. amy hollyfield, abc7 news.

a 2-year-old concord toddler remains in stable condition this morning, recovering from an attack by the family's pit bull. letty mcquay is backed to survive the mauling. doctors say she has a long recovery. the dog bit her in the face, hand and leg. the dog was taken by animal control yesterday. family members were home at the time they called 911 one for help animal control says they euthanized the dog last night. police looking into whether anyone in the house should be charged with a crime. antioch police have released new sketches of two men accused of robbing and kidnapping a taxi driver last month. the victim was able to give police detailed descriptions of two of the three suspects. the cabbie picked up all three at the bart station on april 26th and drove them to an apartment complex in antioch.

one pulled out a gun, robbed him and ordered him into the trunk. he was released unharmed if you recognize anyone call antioch police. army soldier from alameda has died in afghanistan. 30-year-old staff sgt. thomas fogerty was killed during attack on his unit. three other soldiers were wounded but survived. this incident happened sunday he was commander of the armored vehicle that was targeted. the military stresses family members have been notified. the obama administration says the discovery of a new plot to take o'take down a u.s. airliner shows al-qaeda remains a threat. an operative infiltrated a cell in yemen and helped foil the blot. the bomb was an improved version of the so-called underwear bomb made only of chemicals. >> what we know is the bomb contains no metal parts. therefore, would not normally

terry mcsweeney joins us from telegraph hill with the story. >> reporter: to the casual observer and i'm one, you take a look at koi tower and you realize, 80 years of age almost, looking mighty fine. what repairs are needed? look at other shots. these are the pictures when you think of koi tower these are the pictures you think of from the embarcadero, closer and one coming up telegraph hill. it is not the outside of the building that is the problem it is inside. inside you see signs of age, 27 murals done during the depression under the works progress administration. they also are more than 70 years of age, prop b on next month's ballot would deck the city to spend more of the $600,000 raised to -- to maintain the murals. it would also cut back on private events out here. a short time ago i talked to the daughter of one of the mural artists.

she says this nonbinding measure, prop b is a piece of art. >> it is just makes good business sense. if you have a tower that's as the recreation and park describes it, a cash cow, you need to take care of it. you need to take care of the building and particularly the mural that are in it. >> reporter: that makes sense. however, a voice of opposition can be heard in a chronicle editorial among other places. it says koi tower's luster should be tapped to meet obligations beyond the fluted column, and parking lot at its base a showpiece that earns badly needed money to help pay for basketball, back boards in the bay view and tennis nets in the sunset. vote no on prop b. a member of the chamber of congress against proposition b, the question is going before san francisco voters next month. it needs repairs, everyone agrees, what is the best way

the same year the contemporary jewish museum in san francisco featured an exhibit dedicated to maurice sendak, the largest collection of his work outside of a permanent collection in philadelphia. clearly, sendak's work will live on for generations and children will continue to enjoy his most popular book "happy ending." >> because he eats his food and he goes to bed. >> reporter: sendak had a stroke four days ago, he died early this morning in dan bury, connecticut, he was 83-years-old. -- >> we are getting lots of reaction to send 's death on our facebook page. denise: my son and i just read that book before bed last night we have lost a treasure. raymond: good-bye to a great author who filled children's lives with imagination and the joy of reading. you will be missed.

new hope in the fight against aids. the fda meeting thursday to decide whether an hiv-fighting pill should be approved for aids prevention among high risk patients. scientists say it appears to be safe and effective but stresses it only works when taken everyday. it is already on the market to manage hiv. the approval will allowed the drugmaker to market the drug for the new use to prevent hiv. a teenager has put together a sweet prom dress. she made her dress entirely out of star burst wrappers. it took 18,000 wrappers to make the corset as well as matching hair bands and purse classmates helped her collect them, it took five months to make. >> i may the top out of star burst and the both top has a skirt and i wanted to give the illusion that the dress kind of like falling apart so i the star burst all around. >> she says she came up with this idea when she saw a
