good morning. thanks for joining us i'm kristen sze. i'm eric thomas. we have breaking news. police sealed off an area around an industrial complex in menlo park while crews investigate a hazardous materials incident. terry mcsweeney is live near the scene where they got a briefing. what is the latest? >> reporter: kind of a confusing situation edison technology park in menlo park. behind me the hazardous material team folks in the white suits, firefighters as well. we are being kept 200 feet from what they are calling the hot zone. they have red tape there where this began 2:30 this morning. deputies routine patrol driving along -- let's let the depth spoeblgs man take it from there. what happened is our

deputies went out on a suspicious vehicle, worked that up with a couple of guys in the vehicle from there they smelled a strong chemical smell. immediately backed out. called in fire, fire came in and set up a haz-mat. that's what fire is working now. >> reporter: what they are trying to figure out is what was going on at that pick-up truck. 2:30 in the morning, a couple people working what looked like according to the lieutenant, some kind of lab in the back of that pick-up truck. when deputies pulled up they didn't run, they stayed but there was a strong smell in the air. they are trying to determine if the -- what was going on in that pick-up truck has something to do with one of the businesses, they don't know which one if any of the businesses here at edison technology park the situation now edison way blocked off haz-mat on the scene fire department on the scene obviously police on the scene

deputies as well trying to figure out what we are dealing with here and they have not figured that out yet until they do they are going to keep edison way blocked off they are saying there is no immediate threat on the other hand they say there's a shelter in place but it is not being enforced exactly what that means i can't tell you but it seems to be a confusing scene out here. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. >> another major story, volunteers will head back out to a search for a missing morgan hill teenager. investigators looking for evidence on a car they discovered that may be related to her distear republicans. >> katie marzullo joins us live with the late -- -- with the latest. >> reporter: the search in a few hours. volunteers with the klaas kids foundation will head out at 8:00 dive teams expected to

arrive 8 or 9 this morning. this morning it is special, investigators are working off their first solid lead in the case. they found this red volkswagen jetta. monday they identified the car as being possibly related to sierra's disappearance. they say it was captured by several surveillance cameras. investigators are not saying how or where they found the jetta or who owns it. the sheriff's office is making a bold declaration about her whereabouts. >> we believe she is still alive. there is still a chance she is still alive we don't have any evidence indicating she not alive. >> reporter: they say the car is giving them more leads. anyone who saw the car on or around march 16th, should talk to sheriff investigators. if you want to help with the search this morning, they meet at burnet elementary on tilton road in morgan hill they can

check in between 8:00 this morning and 1:00 this afternoon. >> everyone is welcome. thanks kate. more news now. this morning an east bay tire store employee remains in custody after being arrested following a huge warehouse fire yesterday evening. the 32-year-old was arrested last night on suspicion of using illegal fireworks inside blue star tires on a pittsburg antioch highway. they say the fireworks ignited gasoline mix. the fire was reported 4 p.m., severely damaged six businesses in the subdivided warehouse. the owner of a classic car and restoration business says he doesn't have insurance and estimates his loss to be at least $100,000. >> all i can do is laugh to keep from crying. >> two employees of the tire warehouse were injured. they were released from the

hospital last night. 2-year-old in protective custody after being mauled by a family dog. parents face charges. animal control officers provided us with this picture of the about it bull-german shepard mix. the mauling took place at this house in castro valley yesterday afternoon. deputies found many dangerous items in the home. they arrested the parents for child endangerment. the father jared perk continues is in custody. the boy is in the -- hospital. autopsies set for this morning on a pleasanton mother and her teenaged daughter found shot to death in their home. the husband of 37-year-old amy burton found her and their 13-year-old daughter ainsley monday. police found two handguns in the house both unregistered. the hospital told investigators the family got them from his brother in arizona one was found near the

police have sealed off the area around an industrial complex in menlo park while crews investigate a haz-mat incident. terry mcsweeney is live at the scene. we've heard that haz-mat cries are moving into the hot zone have you heard or seen that? >> reporter: we have seen that a couple members of the haz-mat team have moved into what they are calling the hot zone where in pick-up truck was discovered three hours ago. crews were here, sheriff's deputies were here to check on a strange smell when they saw a couple of people hanging out near the back of the a pick-up truck and the strange smell emanating from that pick-up truck they backed off, called out the haz mat team called police and other deputies. right now edison way at the edison technology park is closed down. folks in the white suits, the haz-mat team two there, a couple have gone into where this pick-up truck is located

where the strange bizarre scene unfolded 2:30 this morning. deputies find a couple guys with what they call a lab in the back of a pick-up truck. they say it may be connected to one of the businesses out here of the but the lieutenant is not saying what this is, it may be tied to. the smell was coming from the pick-up truck my guys backed away. once they got something from the fire department they cleared the building. the building -- they got the rest of the people out. >> haz-mat is focused on the pick-up truck? >> right now, originally yes. the business is going to be done after the pick-up truck but they have to do the pick up truck first. >> reporter: we are about 100 feet or so away from what they are calling hot zone where this pick-up truck is located it may be tied to the business next to this pick-up truck.

right now we have not seen anybody being washed off as a result of contamination. the sheriff's office is saying that while there may be a shelter in place technically, nobody is being asked to shelter in place. all the media here standing like i say about 100, maybe 120 feet way from where in pick-up truck is still located with as far as we know that lab still in the back of it. we'll keep you posted. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. developing news in the east bay. police are looking for the driver who hit a 4-year-old girl and took off. her injuries severe, she could lose a foot. amy hollyfield is live in the neighborhood where it happened. >> reporter: police are telling us that they are still looking for that truck and the driver. they are asking that you keep your eye out this morning as you drive to work. this happened last night around 6:30 the little girl was playing in front of her home on 6th street before

clayton road in concord. witnesses say she ran out into the street and was hit by a truck that kept going. they say it never stopped. but, witnesses say it didn't speed away, giving the impression that possibly he didn't know he hit her. some find that hard to belief. >> that car did not see the young child in the street, then he to be blind. cause there is no way he did not see her. >> reporter: police say she does have serious injuries to her foot. she is expected to survive. they are on the lookout for a metallic blue pick-up truck, newer model with over-sized tires, possibly has damage to the right front headlight if you know someone who drives a truck that looks like that and would have been here on 6th street in concord around 6:30 last night, police are asking that you give them a call. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. 5:32. authorities in the north bay

are looking for a murder suspect and the victim's missing vehicle. rohnert park bliss found a 66-year-old woman -- police found a 66-year-old woman dead in her home. family members asked them to check on her because she lives alone. investigators say there appears to have been a violent struggle they noticed the victim's car was missing license plate on your screen. this morning the fbi is investigating threats made against southwest airlines' planes that caused three jets to be searched at two airports last night. officials say nothing suspicious was found. one jet returned to the gate and was isolated at john wayne airport last night after officials learned of a threat of a possible explosive or hazardous material on flight 811 bound for phoenix. they say the same time a similar threat was received about two other planes at sky

harbor international airport in phoenix those jets were searched after they land safely in phoenix. tsa officials say southwest deemed the threats as noncredible. investigation comes as intelligence officials reveals the man selected by al-qaeda to carry a bomb on a jetliner was a cia operative, identified as a saudi arabian spy who penetrated al-qaeda in yemen. techs are examining the bomb that he was going to wear. airports around the world are being urged to be on alert for another attempt by al-qaeda to accomplish its mission. >> back here in california uc students may be facing yet another tuition increase this fall. the system posted the warning on its website late yesterday. next week the university of california where of regents will hear a pro proposal for a 6% tuition hike to help cover a 139 million dollar budget shortfall, that amounts to

extra 732 per student. uc leaders are worried they could receive less from the state after the governor's budget on monday. out in csu system cal-state board set to vote on a common verse al compensation proposal for new campus president -- recommending amending a policy so taxpayers will not fundraises for new presidents. instead, campus non-profit groups will be asked to raise funds to specifically pay for the salary hikes. csu officials say the money is needed to recruit talented leaders. critics say the hikes are an insult to students who face mounting tuition increases. san francisco school officials voted to lay-off 2 eight -- 218 faculty and staff after sending out 333

preliminary notices in march. the teachers and you beyond set out dozens of empty chairs last night to represent the lay-offs. they say the board should use part of its 80 million dollar reserve fund to rescind the pink slips. a judge ruled that 65 special faculty members in the mission and bay view would not be immuned to the lay-offs. teachers are set to take a strike authorization vote tomorrow after the district declare add impasse in contract talks. new report out shows california's crackdown on junk food in school cafeterias is paying off. california became the first state a decade ago to ban the sale of soft drinks in schools. since 2007 the stay has enforced nutrition standards limiting the a.m., sugar and calories included in meal plans and snacks from vending months. -- students consume 160 fewer calories per day than

the owners of an oil tanker that spilled more than 50,000 gallons of fuel into the bay will pay nearly two million dollar fine. expecting that announcement later today.

dubai star was refueling near the bay bridge in october of 2009 one tank began overflowing, nobody aboard noticed, no alarm sounded and nobody called for help for several hours. most of the money will be used to restore wildlife habitats damaged by the spill. san francisco supervisors considering legislation that would allow the 49ers to get out of their lease early. but it will cost. the 9ers' lease expires in may of 2015. they are hoping to be playing in a new stadium by the start of the 2014 season. under the option the 9ers would pay a million dollars to the san francisco rec and parks department to amend the lease also four million dollars if no games are played at candlestick in the 2014 season and more if they stayed. the proposal would require employees be offered jobs at that new stadium. number of carpoolers crossing the bay area seven state run bridges continues to

drop after a toll was enforced two years ago in july 2010, it was no longer free for commuters to use carpool lanes transportation officials implemented a a $2 five if i charge. the number dropped -- by 26% after the toll was imposed. traffic on the seven bridges which does not include the golden gate went up nearly 1 1/2%. there may be a link between our long commutes and expanding waistlines article finds people who have long drives to work are more likely to be overweight compared to noncommuting peers. doctors say drivers burn fewer calories because they are sitting longer. studies have found links between long periods of sitting and health risks like cancer, heart disease and early death. >> around tired from all that
