i'm terry mcsweeney live in san francisco where a suspect that sonoma skilling shot to death by san francisco police after he fired at officers and set fire to an apartment building. story is coming up in a live report. >> also this morning, flames rip through three townhomes in santa clara. firefighters put up a major battle to keep the fire from spreading. >> san francisco supervisors are they say they could walk out before the end of school year. >> i'm mike nicco. here is a live look at downtown san francisco. it's clear and cool this morning. you have sunshine and warmer weather on the way. 90s still in the forecast. >> i'm frances dinglasan. traffic is light right now. ready for bike to workday? >> eric: i'm ready for it. it's 4:30. i'm eric thomas.

>> and i'm kristen sze. >> developing news we've been following. a police standoff. they shot and killed a man believed to have killed a rohnert park woman. terry is live on post street. >> post near hyde and homicide investigators are still on the scene and so were san francisco firefighters, all of them played in a role what happened here last night. take a look at some pictures of the scene. about 9:00 last night shortly after police from rohnert park up in sonoma county had come to a three-story apartment building to talk to a man about homicide in their area. the man's girlfriend answered the door. man opened fire on police. rohnert police backed off. called on san francisco police for back-up. here is what happened next. >> over the course of the next hour, the suspect fired multiple shots through walls and floors,

the building had other people in it. at some point in time, the suspect set fire in the apartment. >> they decided to take the gunman shooting and killing the man. police are still not releasing his name. he was wanted in the questioning of 66-year-old diane hughes. she died from blunt force trauma. police tried to county fact someone in san francisco tuesday evening. they were unsuccessful and then they returned wednesday and found their man at 11:00 this morning. they will be having a news conference at city hall and talking about the details possibly releasing the name of the person who was at the center of all this. terry mcsweeney, "abc 7 news." >> eric: this morning, santa clara fire investigators are

trying to determine case of a large fire that destroyed three townhomes. flames shot hundred feet into the air. fire started at about 10:00 last night at a residential complex in santa clara. about 50 firefighters battled the flames. it took about an hour to get it under control. officials say they were fortunate there wasn't any wind that kept flames from spreading. no reports of injuries. >> kristen: president obama and george clooney head add fund-raiser. he now supports same-sex marriage. katie, watershed announcement. how will it affect the crowd today? >> going out on the hollywood is historically democratically

liberal kind of town. they will be on his side and they have plenty of money and this is a fund-raiser at george clooney house. speaking of fund-raising, the obama campaign actually received $1 million in donations within 90 minutes of his exclusive interview with good morning america's interview robin roberts. they say it's a brave and milestone for civil rights. there is the politics of it. is it a smart move heading into an election. >> i have just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that i think same-sex couples should be able to get married. >> in november, he is going to lose votes and he'll pick up votes. i'm not sure how much of gain it will be. >> mitt romney responded quickly

to the announcement. he was campaigning in oklahoma and he reiterated he believes marriage is between a man and woman. you can watch the interview on gma at 7:00 a.m. they talk about whether or not its flip-flop for president obama. >> he has been going through an evolution in the process. a former law enforcement officer is under arrest after leading police on a chase that begin in marin county as they responded to reports of domestic violence of them caught up with suspect last night. chp officers had to shoot the man with bean bags in order to detain him and the freeway was closed to take care of activity. a boy that was mauled by a dog is being treated at a hospital.

it took place at this house on gary drive early tuesday morning. they say they found many dangerous items inside the home. animal control officers provided with us a picture of the pit bull that attacked the chimed. it's being kept at a shelter the boy's father is being held in jail in lieu of hundred thousand dollars bail. >> a few hours, a teen that is charged with stealing a car and drive-by shooting is scheduled to be in court to enter a plea. he was charged as an adult for the crimes. his attorney asked for wade's arrangement to be delayed until day. they found an arsenal of weapons including the stolen car when they searched a storage unit in richmond. he is being held in a juvenile home on $2 million bail.

>> teacher unions are expected to take vote today and if necessary call a strike. a state mediator is working with the district to find a compromise talks which school officials say is at an impasse. the current contract expires on jl first. district is demanding $30 million in cuts in teacher salaries and benefits. they are preparing to issue 218 pink slips by the may 15 deadline because of state budget cuts. >> eric: today 18th annual bike to workday. they expect record participation one reason is the number of cyclists has increased by 70% in the last five years. the there will be convoys and floirj stations and you can go to our website for more information on the location on

>> kristen: good morning on this thursday. live look outside. this is san francisco, pretty clear this morning and we're on our way to some warmer temperatures compared to yesterday. we'll talk to mike nicco in just a moment and get your mother's day forecast. >> eric: there has been another attack at napa state hospital. this time a psych tech was seriously injured. vic lee was the first to report. it happened tuesday evening in a unit that houses patients that have been committed by families. several employees were hurt trying to subdue a patient. that patient was arrested. the injured technician is recovering from injuries that required surgery. >> lawyers for johannes mehserle are asking a san francisco appeals court to overturn his conviction. they found him guilty of voluntary manslaughter of shooting oscar grant.

grant was an unarmed passenger. mehserle he has contended that the shooting was accidental. he claims he thought he had drawn his taser and not his gun in a court filing, they called it a tragic and horrible error but not act with the level of recklessness that legally defines manslaughter. he is now pursuing an appeal because he can't get another law enforcement job with a felony conviction on his record. >> eric: plant to provide free rides for youngsters from low income families may be in jeopardy because they are considering proposals from other transit agencies. last month, san francisco muni officials decided for free rides for those under 18. santa clara transportation authority wants to have $4.5 million to give flee passes to low income adults and after

we'll be mostly clear tonight, not be quite as cool this morning. still a lot of sunshine for mother's day. everybody goes up around the bay and coast, inland you'll be about the same if not a little cooler. san jose up 6 degrees. oakland 50 to 75. hayward up 4 to 73. santa rosa, 2 degrees up to 84. look at danville, one degree cooler, dropping from 84 to 83. down in the south bay we'll have low to mid-80s with santa clara around 81 degrees. on the peninsula, low to mid-70s for millbrae and in as many. out over the coast a little breezy. low to mid-60s around the coast and upper 60s in downtown san francisco. low to mid-50s in bodega bay down to stinson beach. we have low to mid 80s for the rest of north bay valleys. low to mid-70s along the east bay shore.

heading inland low to mid-80s in dublin to 85 degrees in brentwood. clouds will give way to sunshine but low to mid-60s around carmel and san jose. traveling the state today. cooler weather makes night the central valley. upper 80s in sacramento to 91 in fresno. about 67 in tahoe. cooler in l.a. but another run at 102 in palm springs. tigers are in town taking on a's. a's lost last night. first pitch, clear and comfortable, 70 down to 62 degrees. tonight, temperatures will be in the low to mid 50s and few clouds gathering around the coast. look at the seven-day forecast, temperatures mid to upper 80s saturday and sunday. mid to upper 60s along the coast. we'll cool a little next week but temperatures are running above average. here is frances.

heavy traffic report. 22 miles an hour from macarthur toward west grant line road and looking good through altamont pass. >> kristen: san bruno residents are mourning the death of their long time mayor bob marshall. he died late tuesday night from injuries he suffered in a fall in march. he served as the mayor from 1980 through 1982. there is he was also called mr. san bruno for his work on the city council. >> eric: an effort to recall jean quan appears to be faltering. they didn't have the necessary signatures to put it on the ballot. a second effort has barely gotten a third of the number of signatures for a recall. >> being a big city mayor is a
