girlfriend's apartment last night. abc 7 news is live at the scene of the shootout. >> that girlfriend's apartment is on active crime scene, there are investigators there trying to gather evidence as we speak. we're finally able to piece together the story behind that standoff that happened here at post and levenworth. this started tuesday morning when family members asked police to check on her well being. police found the body of diane hughes tuesday night. she had been beaten to death. family members told investigators her son dennis lived with her and was missing. they also said his girlfriend lived in this apartment building in san francisco. detectives knocked on her door at about 9:00 last night. >> mary the girlfriend came to the front door. and she was ashen and seemed nervous. >> the detectives still

outside of the apartment began to talk to dennis hughes, hiding inside. >> at some point some rounds were fire wed believe from dennis to the wall. >> the detectives called police for back up, monica kelly lives in the building. >> we're sitting in the apartment and all of a sudden you heard a gunshot. and then, that is when we heard all of the s.w.a.t. team and cops all just running into our apartment building. >> homicide lieutenant tells us what happened next. >> it continued to shoot through the sealing, the floor and walls. into apartments and staircase autos police say there were two firearm was him. and police began evacuating residents from the apartments and buildings as well. they say he may have planned

for a long standoff. >> this active shooter fort nied his position. >> the suspect lit a bedroom afire. a good fire in. >> light of the fire and danger, police officials made the decision to shoot shoou hughes. >> a sharp shooter eliminated a threat to public safety. >> the sharp shooter fired from a roof top into this window hitting hughes in the head. and police say hughes was apparently having a problem with his mother, saying she was trying to get him to move out of the house. >> thank you. >> the gang member convicted of a brazen triple murder

spoke to abc 7 news at the hall of justice,. >> edwin ramos doesn't deny he was a member of a gang, he beat up people, that he sold drugs but he said killing someone is quote, a whole different animal. and he is denying he had involvement in what police say was a case of mistaken identity. we talked to edwin ramos behind the bars of the san francisco jail. he told us his version of what happened. it was june, 2008, the 48-year-old and two sons a 16-year-old matthew and 20-year-old michael were gunned dmoun a drive by shooting. >> i turned right and left. and then, he yelled fire.
