>> in the news this morning, may 20th, the start of the 101st bay to breakers just about an hour underway with street closers and the effect throughout san francisco. we will have a live report. and changing his status. mark zuckerberg gets married in a private ceremony to his long-time girlfriend just one day after the company's ipo was on the nasdaq. good morning, thanks for joining us. i'm carolyn tyler. let's start with a first quick look at the weather. here's our meetologist lisa argen. >> lisa: good morning, everyone. nice and clear. here's a view from the roof camera where temperatures are in

the 50s at this hour. cooler at the coast with mid-40s there. we will look at more sunshine throughout the day today. 55 mountain view, san jose and 53 in the city. so this the low to mid-50s for start time at the embarcadero. more sunshine by midmorning. 57 degrees. it should be about the number at about 10:00. and with more sunshine throughout the noontime hour, it will be a beautiful day at our beaches with low 60s. the sea breeze will increase throughout the afternoon. so bring the jacket if you are headed to the coast. elsewhere we will see much warmer weather. in fact, inland valleys upper 80s. i'll detail that for you in a few minutes. carolyn. >> carolyn: thank you, lisa. it is the race known around the world. san francisco's bay to breakers is celebrating their 101st year this morning. runners take off in an hour. here's the route some 40,000 people will follow and there will be some street closers.

you can expect street closers in downtown san francisco, the civic center, the panhandle and golden gate park. abc7 news reporter sergio introduces us to one participate and with the details >> the crowds are starting to build here on the corner of howard and beale in san francisco. you can see the top runners, the elite runners at the front of the line. they will start at 7:00 and will probably hit the finish line about 30 minutes later. other runners will fall in behind them. and at about 7:30 all of the people wearing the costumes and no costumes and no clothes will hit after that. this is the second year of the new and stricter regulations against alcohol. as you know, there was some trouble during the 2010 race. about two dozen people treated for alcohol poisoning, neighbors complaining of runners urinating on their property, vomiting, things like that. again, this year no alcohol is permitted, no throws are permitted, no carts with wheels on them permitted during the race. there will be more than 300

san francisco police officers along the racecourse to make sure there are no problems. one of the racers we met today, 65-year-old marian lions. this is her 30th bay to breakers, and she likes the new rules. >> oh, yes. it's just been great because you get a better feel of running and not being interfered with and or bothered with all the crazies. and the way they have the course all marked off now, it's just great for running and keeping the people back. >> what's the most outrageous thing you have ever seen? >> well, the nude runners mostly. and they still take me every time. [laughter] >> yeah. and people along the racecourse as well. as i mentioned, carolyn, about 40,000 racers taking part. there will be up to 100,000 people, spectators, fans, residents along the racecourse

to see what's going on. the elite runners will finish in about 30 minutes at the great highway. the finish line over there on the coast will be open until 12 noon when the race will finally be over. but again, we are now less than an hour away from the start time. starting an hour earlier this year compared to last year. live in downtown san francisco, john alston, abc7 news. >> carolyn: thank you, john. i love the race and i like the ban on booze. san francisco building inspectors have allowed a visitation valley resident to return home after a car crashed into his house last night. it sheared off the natural gas meter. this upside-down bmw also took out the emergency gas shut off valve. firefighters say the driver lost control while swerving to avoid a car around 9:00 last night. he was rushed to a hospital with serious injuries. firefighters then focused on capping that gas leak. it took pg&e crews about an hour to dig down to the gas line and finally cut off the flow until

permanent repairs can be made. elsewhere in san francisco this morning investigators are trying to determine the cause of a house fire that sent two people in the hospital with burns. it started around 7:30 in the bayview district inside a home on lucy court near william avenue. the first crews on scene thought the fast moving fire might spread to the homes next door. >> they did an aggressive job and fantastic job. we medically treated the two burn victims and they have been transported and there were other occupants in the building and we made sure they were safe and removed from harm's way. >> carolyn: the fire caused a power outage for about 30 residents but electricity was restored a couple of hours later. a surprise twist to an oakland fire we reported yesterday morning as breaking news.

that fire started around 4:00 inside of a warehouse near the auto road section of broadway. it turns out the huge flames were fueled by nearly 500 marijuana plants tharpe growing inside. a jerry-rigged electrical system that operated the system made it more difficult and dangerous for fire crews. >> when you have a large growing operation, don't know how they are getting their electrical source. so we have to be mindful of that. we had pg&e come out and cut off the electricity to both buildings immediately. >> carolyn: that fire smoldered for about five hours while pg&e crews worked to shut off the power. neighbors say they recalled seeing people moving restaurant equipment into the building but never saw anyone after that. new this morning, marin county supervisors will cold a workshop this morning to find a way to streamline development project. for example, a pending proposal

by movie mogul george lucas to build housing on grady ranch. you might remember the first proposed building, a big film studio on that property, but neighbors overwhelmingly objected. he proposed low income housing instead. and supervisors are interested in that proposal because the county needs more affordable housing. now they are looking for ways to streamline all the red tape for projects that provide hub -- public benefit. what a week it's been for facebook founder mark zuckerberg. first he takes his company public, now he's changed his status to married. the 28-year-old wed his long time girlfriend, 24-year-old priscilla chan. they met at harvard and have been together for more than nine years. the ceremony took place in the backyard of his home. one guest said zuckerberg himself designed the ring. he said it's a very simple rube. dinner was served family style and included dishes from the

couple's favorite local sushi restaurant. he took his company public on friday in one of the most anticipated moves in wall street history. chan graduated at medical school last monday. the wedding guests said they thought they were going to chan's graduation party. instead it was a wedding. coming up, a magical 6.0 -- a magnitude 6.1 earthquake rattled northern italy, toppling buildings. also a preview of tonight's rare solar eclipse and we will tell you how to view it safely.

>> closed captioning brought to you by mancini sleepworld. >> carolyn: developing news this morning in italy where a magnitude 6.0 earthquake has killed at least four people. buildings toppled early this morning in the northern region 22 miles northwest of bologna. the quake hit at 4:00 in the morning, sending panicked residents running into the streets. two people were killed at a ceramics factory that collapsed. two others died of heart attacks. at dawn residents inspected the ruins of a church and other buildings that collapsed, sending bricks and stones tumbling into the streets. seismologists say it was one of the strongest quakes on record for that region. today world leaders, including

president obama, will begin the two-day nato summit in chicago. it will focus on planning for afghanistan's future with nato forces scheduled to exit the country by 2015. yesterday some of the leaders were at camp david for the annual g-8 meetings. the european financial crisis topped the agenda. german chancellor merckel has pushed for austerity measures, but many observers see recent election results in france and greece as rejections of belt-tightening. >> there is now an emerging consensus that more must be done to promote growth and job creation right now in the context of these fiscal and structural reforms. that consensus for progress was strengthened here at camp david. >> carolyn: the leaders also agreed that iran should not be allowed to build nuclear weapons. their meetings included talks about crackdowns against protesters in syria, as well.

you can expect some political fireworks coming up at 8:00 here on abc7 as the top congressional leaders from both parties go head-to-head on "this week with george stephanopoulos." speaker of the house, john boehner, and democratic leader nancy pelosi confront all the issues. nothing is off the table, jobs, economy, the election. that's on "this week with george stephanopoulos" coming up at 8:00 right here on abc7. something unusual will take place in the sky early this evening, but you don't have to look up to see it. abc7 news reporter jonathan bloom has more on the partial annular solar eclipse visible in the bay area tonight. >> reporter: it's a wonder of nature marveled at by cultures around the world. >> we will see a partial solar eclipse. the moon will move between the sun and the earth and it will block out 84% of the sun. >> they explain here in the bay area the eclipse will look something like this.

>> the image of the sun will be a bright letter c. >> staring at the sun is dangerous so dougherty already has his eclipse glasses ready. you can buy yours at a telescope shop. >> they are mylar with aluminum on both sides and designed to save your eyes. >> but you don't have to look at the sky by looking to the sky. you can look at the ground. >> go out under a tree, and every pin hole in that tree is going to make a letter c on the ground and it will be an amazing site. >> he showed us how it will work. >> i cut an aluminum mask that will make a pattern just like the sun is going to look during the partial solar eclipse and hold up a light. >> holding up a piece of construction paper with a c on -- a hole in it. you can see the c in that. >> there's no c in that piece of paper. i cut it as a triangle just so you could see i went cheating. >> so no matter what the shape of the gaps between the leafs, you will be able to see the partial eclipse in all of them.

it's all good timing because we get to see the eclipse tonight and actually cool down as we start the work week, although i don't know if that's good timing. but we are enjoying a nice warm afternoon today and lots of sunshine to view this. a beautiful shot where temperatures have cooled off along the coast to the low 40s. 52 right now. the wind will peck throughout the day but overall the wind is from the north and keeping the fog just offshore. 48 napa, 53 fremont, 54 mountain view. we are trending warmer this morning, anywhere from two to five degrees warmer around the bay and that's because of our warmup. so with the clear start we will see temperatures anywhere from two to four degrees warmer today. and tomorrow we will begin with some clouds. a cooler afternoon. winds are going to pick up, especially along the coast, but then the winds coming back throughout much of the work week. mid-50s with the clear sky at the bay right now upper 50s by

about 10:00 in the morning. and later on around noontime we see numbers in and around 60 degrees with fog offshore. so the sea breeze will be about ten to twenty miles an hour had in the afternoon but it will be pleasant for the game today for the series continuing at at&t park. with low to mid-60s in the afternoon. and actual high in the uner 60s. another great day in the city. we will see more 80s, not only in the inland valley but from the south bay and even up to the north bay as well. we had a little bit of a breeze yesterday, but today more warmth working our way and the 60s and 70s confined in the neighbors around the coast and the bay. this area of high pressure is weakening, and because it's weakening we will see the changes occur tonight. but the high clouds and the low clouds will stay offshore for good viewing still for the eclipse later on this afternoon. it's overnight tonight that we

will see more of a cool weather pattern take shape, but today mild to warm conditions. and this is not only the first in a series of travis that will come our way, this one tonight brings us the low clouds and fog for tomorrow morning. 76 in los angeles, 84 in yosemite. if you haven't heard about it, the viewing, peak viewing starting at 5:16 tonight. and you definitely don't lack up at the sun but down around the pavement you will see the press santa rosa shape and peeking at 6:33 with 84% coverage out there. 67 in the city. 74 in oakland with 77 across the bay in fremont. low to mid-80s for santa clara. upper 80s perhaps in some of our warmest east bay valleys. and the sea breeze keeping monterey in the mid-60s. five to eight degrees of cooling tomorrow and in tuesday. that's well below normal and the winds check up for midweek with highs only in the lower 70s. and by next weekend we are still

>> carolyn: welcome back, everyone. the 101st edition of the san francisco bay to breakers race gets underway in about 30 minutes and organizers open it's better this year. last year the race went off without a hitch but then problems occur past hayes street or what is known as heartbreak hill when spectators began littering and using driveways at bathrooms. take a look at the route some 4 how racers will follow and expect 100,000 spectators will be cheering them on. you can expect street closers in downtown san francisco, the

civic center, hayes valley, the panhandle and golden gate park. abc news introduces us to one bay to breakers participant who expects to cross the finish lane for the 29th consecutive year. >> well, just because it sounded like fun. >> over the last 28 years martha tinker jones has seen plenty during her bay to breakers runs. >> got a little rowdy as the years went by. >> this is a race that is notorious, even organizers encourage the. >> we say come naked, but don't come drunk. >> and wheeled contraptions are band banned and you have to register to get in on the race. it's become a family tradition for jones. over the years a couple children have run with her and most recently her teenage grand daughter has come which created colorful moments to say the least. >> the first time mattie saw the

nude people, i believe trying to talk very fast and cover this up. so you might look over here. >> and i was like, yeah, let's keep talking about this. >> and he was naked? >> yes. he was completely -- i think he had sox on. >> martha started running the race back in 1984 at the spry young age of 54. and for those participating in the race now, she has some advice. pace yourself and train before the race. >> i think getting ready is really important. >> prepare yourself because, you know, if you do start to injure yourself you will get passed by the grandmother. it's an advocacy organization to support pot smokers, hair win addiction and other drug users. >> did you talk bat thursday thing? >> this is a bimonthly union meeting, but probably unlike any you have ever attended. this is the san francisco drug users union. >> people think it's a joke or we just get together to get high or something like that. quite the opposite. >> isaac jackson said he's an active meth user and an m. i. t. college grad who cofounded the union three years ago. the members are other drug users, former users and their supporters. they believe the war on drugs has failed miserably. according to their mission statement the union's goals are to decriminal lies drugs and drug use and create a save environment where people can use and enjoy drugs and to promote a positive image of drug users. >> when we stigmatize drug users we make it more difficult for them to access healthcare. we make it more difficult for them to exercise their human and

civil rights. >> laura thomas is the state director of the nonprofit drug policy alliance, the major funder of the drug users union, which is located in the tenderloin. >> our goal is to shift the response to drugs from criminal justice response to a public health response. >> tony is director of the international institute of criminal justice leadership at usf and former san francisco police chief. he believes law enforcement is a necessary tool to crack down on drugs. >> it has to be. has to be. otherwise for many, not all, but for many of the drug users there's no incentive to get into treatment, to get into rehabilitation. >> but that's not the focus of the drug users union. >> if they want to quit, we will help them to quit. but if they are still going to

use, we are not here to say, no, you can't do that. >> counselor gary west said members are not allowed to use at the union meetings, but it's okay if they come in loaded. >> hell, half the time we are all high. >> he said the drugs don't keep the members it from serious business. >> one of their slogans is nothing about us without us, meaning they are demanding a voice in drug policy decisions. one of their main missions is to get a supervised, safe injection site for heroin users, like this one in vancouver. and they are working with sf general hospital to develop a how-to manual to handle drug users who come in for medical care. jeanne little shares the union's goal. she's with the therapy center, a state certified treatment program. >> we are unusual in that we do not ask people to get clean and sober as a condition of coming into treatment or as a goal of treatment. and we partner with drug users

to figure out what their goals are and to help them achieve their goals at their own pace. >> if their perspective is that they want to continue to use drugs and hurt themselves, which is what they are doing, i can't support that. >> but isaac jackson said the movement is growing. he recently spoke before san francisco's human rights commission about the discrimination in housing, employment and education drug users face. >> you are telling drug users, hey, it's okay to be an addict. >> well, i don't think the users are waiting for word from me on whether they should use drugs or not. >> although there is a lot of buzz about san francisco's union, it is not the first in the nation. there's one in new york and now seattle may follow suit. new this morning on tuesday the hercules city council will hear a presentation on the future of ferry service in their city from the agency that

overseas bay area ferry service. the mudslide coastline has long been pegged as an ideal spot for ferry service. it is part of a planned enter model transportation center that would include existing bus and amtrak service. the san francisco bay water emergency transportation authority estimates that dredging a channel deep enough for ferry service in hercules would initially lost 17 to $20 million and plus $3 million every few years to maintain it. he like riding the ferries on a beautiful day like this. >> lisa: it should be a great day for that. temperatures are a few degrees warmer today so that should bring us well above the average. notice no fog to speak of. we are already warmer than we were yesterday. in some areas still some low 40s at the coast. i will give i the numbers for today and talk about the cool down next week next. >> carolyn: thank you, lisa. also next demonstrators take to the greens protest ago local

in san francisco protesters are fighting for endangered frogs and snakes that live near a public golf course. yesterday's protest coincided with the 80s anniversary of the shark park golf club in pacifica. protesters say red-legged frogs and garter snakes are dying because the golf course is pumping water out of the wet hands it sits on. san francisco and the golf course say plans are being implement today save the species. there's new concern about the safety of cosmetics and the amount of chemicals in some of them. a new warning focuses on dangerous levels of mercury found in some anti-aging skin lightening creams, throwings and soaps from foreign country. here's 7 on your side's michael finney with his investigation. >> these items, they may work well, but they give you beauty at a tremendous cost. >> vernon is a research scientist with the state department of public health. the team of investigators at the department recently launched a one-year study to determine the extent of the problem. >> it's of concern. you really only want to have minimal amounts of mercury in your system, like maybe a part per billion.

that's one part in a billion. and this has got about 4% mercury. >> the fda said mercury can cause damage to the kidneys and nervous system and even interfere with the development of the brain in the unborn and in young children. children can become contaminated by touching a parent or even a countertop exposed to mercury. >> mercury can also vaporize or get into the air from mercury-containing skin creams and the child may breathe the mercury in the air. and finally mercury can get into dust or food. >> this doctor said state investigators are currently testing for mercury and other chemicals in cosmetics purchased throughout california sold at ethnic markets and swap meets. >> in our experience the skin products that contain mercury have all been imported in some way. >> sometimes it comes in by way of personal luggage, other times it's trucked or flown in for sale at the store. stacy is cofounder for the campaign for safe cosmetics.

>> as a consumer i definitely want to avoid any skin creams that contain mercury or any variation of mercury, skin creams that don't have labels or labels aren't available in english or if the label didn't contain ingredients it's best not to use the product. >> we found a skin cream matching that description and two other products whose labels were primarily in a foreign languages. we sent all three products to a certified lab and all three tested for trace amounts of mercury, but less than the 1 part per million allowed by the food and drug administration. results from the more in-depth state study won't be known for another year. >> there is always questions, and i would say there's probably a handful of ingredients in cosmetics that issues have been raised about. >> that's the vice president of the industry trade group the personal care products council. some of those ingredients include the known carcinogen formaldehyde in shampoo, lead

and lipstick. and one chemical in nail polish is suspected of causing headaches. europe has banned 100 chemicals. the united states only ten. >> if they aren't safe for use they shouldn't be in a product. >> we need to update the 1938 cosmetics law and give the fda real authority to oversee this industry. >> how far any new regulation should go is a subject of controversy. the campaign for save cosmetics, phasing out chemicals that cause cancer and reproductive harm and full disclosure of ingredients but the trade group calls it overreaching and calls for simply greater oversight. i'm michael finney, 7 on your side. >> carolyn: meteorologist lisa argen here now. the forecast down the line not look so good for memorial day, but you will get to that. >> lisa: yes, so enjoy today. we will see changes as soon as tomorrow but the changes get

more widespread and more dramatic as we head throughout the work week. so today we are starting out with the clear and warmer air mass. in fact,, we are look at numbers in the 50s, some upper 50s. but it's cooler at the coast with low 40s there but we will warm up quickly all around the bay because generally we have that warmer air mass in place, and overall a northerly wind flow that will aid in our warmup today. three degrees warmer in redwood city right now compared to yesterday. same deal in mountain view and concord and hayward look at four degrees of warming. we are looking at the clear start. the fog is offshore, being held offshore by the northerly wind flow. the sea breeze will pick up by the afternoon. it will be warmer, two to four degrees warmer today. that will keep us well above average today. then tomorrow the winds kick up. fog will be with us in the morning. it's going to stay at the coast. but right now we are looking at mid-50s around the bay. more sunshine throughout the

10:00 hour with upper 50s, and by about noontime we are looking at around 60 with a very light breeze here. a west wind. 10 to 20 miles an hour throughout the afternoon. but at the ballpark plenty of sunshine and light wind there throughout much of the game with low to mid-60s. afternoon highs in the upper 60s for the a's today and the giants. so around the bay look at more of the oranges heading around the fringes up into the north bay valleys, the santa clara valley. but still comfortable 70s for our friends across the bay in oakland and hayward today, san francisco on the up he were 70s side and it's due to high pressure to the north of us. it has been strong in building but now it is beginning to sort of flatten out and we will be looking at changes occurring tonight. but the timing pretty good so that we are enjoying the clear skies for the rest of the weekend. the mild to warm day today. and then for that late afternoon solar eclipse viewing it looks about good as well.

84 yosemite with mid-70s along the coast. the fog beginning to move on in after midnight. between 5:16 when that eclipse begins into 6:30 we are looking at really clear conditions and a beautiful evening out there. pretty warm in most spots with 84% coverage. you will see the crescent shape even if you look down. hopefully you are looking down on to the pavement. 67 today in the city with 74 in oakland. low 80s in the north bay to mid-80s for santa rosa and cloverdale. 82 for san jose today with that sea breeze 10 to 20 miles an hour from half moon bay to ocean beach and monterey sunshine with mid-60s. 76 for santa rosa crude. accuweather seven-day forecasted to the warmest day out of the next seven. in fact, around danville, the try valley, upper 80s. five to seven degrees cooling with coastal fog. the second trough coming in midweek and that will bring much cooler conditions, windy through

inspired work at fort point. a main stage will be set up at crissy field and a watercraft parade will dominate the parade. there's no way to know how many thousands of people will show up, but one thing is for sure. >> driving is crowded down here on an average weekend and with all the crowds we are expecting, it will be pretty much impossible to park. there's no event parking. >> organizers suggest walking, bikng or taking public transit and come prepared and bring your patience. it will be a slow exit. people should come well prepared, warmly dressed, well-hydrated and expect a slow exit. >> invasion, inspiration, they said it couldn't be built and here we are 75 years later celebrating it. >> the grand finale is a fireworks show. the best place to see it is anywhere from fort point to east marina green and there are other good sights as well. go to abc7news.com and click on "see it on tv." in san francisco, abc7 news.

>>ed world war ii battleship the uss iowa will get a final send-off as it passes beneath the golden gate bridge for the last time at 3:30 this afternoon. it will be towed to southern california to become a floating

museum. crews have been restoring the iowa at pier3 in richmond. it was launched back in 1943 and served the navy until 1990. the ship could have made its home in san francisco, but the board of supervisors voted against it in 2005. the iowa is scheduled to depart richmond at 2:30 this afternoon. let's now go to the coast of portugal, where surfer gird mcnamara took the ride of his life and one for the record books. check it out. a massive 78-foot wave. he was towed in and then surfing for his life. this is officially the biggest wave ever ridden according to the "guinness book of world records." you can see it's two or three times the sides of what we see at mavericks and half moon bay. he said he wasn't sure just how big the wave was when he got to the bottom and the spray hit his shoulder he said it felt like a ton of bricks. i can believe that.
