>> alan: developing news out where a downed tree is causing big problems for residents and long delays on a busy muni metro line. i'm alan wang. >> ama: let's get the latest on how to he city is repairing the damage. >> reporter: right here on church and 24th street. and church is closed between 24th and 23rd and has been for four hours. up the street you can see pg&e crews are working on the power pole in danger of falling into church street after a large tree branch fell off the tree and on

to powerlines. homes were knock out of power and are back online, and they're saying their working as fast as they can to fix the pole. church street has been closed citizens 12:30 after the huge tree branch apparently just fell off this large tree on elizabeth and church. the branch hit the powerlines, causing the power poll to lean precariously into church street. the pole fractured at the base. pg&e braced the pole, and the city workers are trimming tree branches. 12 homes were without power for four hours according to the crews. the j church muni line has been stalled since 1:00. ant which you is not blewed. >> we waited 50 minute nems bark dare roar statement because it wasn't announced in public there was tree felled. and it was a hassle. >> reporter: she has opted to get back on a bus instead of the

j line. she has to get back to albany and is two hours late. pg&e crews say they're working as fast as they can to get the power pole braced so muni can resume service on the j line. they're trying to get that power pole braced, and they say they will open the street and come back later on when they can schedule replacing the pole. they're telling us now it's going to have to be at least until 6:00 that they're going to have church street closed between 23rd and 24th. so far those people that were without power, now have power, and hopefully everything will be back to normal in an hour. but i'm sure the j line has been backed up a long time. reporting live in san francisco. >> alan: one of oakland's toughest neighborhoods, the fruit vail district, has seen its share of shooting fay tall joitz this week a coalition of neighborhood groups is trying to raise money for a gun buyback program.

sergio quintana is live with more on that. >> reporter: that fundraiser is scheduled for thursday at the restaurant. that is one of many businesses here in fruitvale that have been rattled by gun violence, and the co-owner of the restaurant was gunned down a little more than a year ago. business is bustling on this sunny sunday at the restaurant but outside a memorial to jesus campos provides a constant reminder of the man would once co-owned the restaurant. he was shot to death last april in what police say was a botched robbery attempt. next to the cash register is a poster for a gun buyback. >> we tried to figure out that would do to end the violence in the neighborhood, and we kept coming back to the guns. >> judith heads up a group called the 100 women against violence. she was compelled to take action

after watching the coverage of a murder last year. >> he is a little boy. it was very heartbreaking. all of us have children, grandchildren. >> reporter: the plan is to raise money at the restaurant and through community donations. that money will then be used to buy gift cards from neighborhood stories and supermarkets. one organizer says the gift card will be given away in exchange for guns. >> the mothers, the wives, the daughters, i want to focus on that. we are pleading to them to get rid of those guns, to make the change within the home so the change can occur in the streets. >> gun buybacks in oakland have often seen mixed results with gun dealers from outside the area dumping junction finals they cannot sell to organizers are taking precautions. >> we want to focus in oakland. if you can provide proof you're an oakland resident. >> organizers are hoping to

raise $10,000 for the gun buyback. they have raised almost half of that goal, so they're hoping this thursday's fundraiser here will give them a boost. the buyback itself is planned along with a march supposed to take place on saturday, june 2nd in oakland, abc-7 news. >> ama: three people were injured in a bizarre freeway crash on the peninsula. happened just after 8:30 this morning on northbound highway 101, just north of the hillsdale boulevard exit in san mateo. the california highway patrol says a prius was videotaping a group of motorcyclist on the freeway when the driver struck one. the driver of the preus lost control of his car and struck another biker. when the prius driver pulled over he was assaulted bay group of other cyclist. the two drivers were hospitalized. the chp is looking few whoever committed the attack. >> this morning oakland fire investigators and police return to the sight of a three alarm

fire where hundreds of pot plants were discovered. the fire started at 4:00 yesterday morning inside a warehouse near the out tee row section of broadway. investigators are trying to pinpoint the cause for the blame and determine who bypassed an electrical system for the marijuana grow site. police say 500 pot plants were discovered inside. >> alan: in italy the death toll of a 6 pot earthquake is up to six. rescuers are searching for victims or survivors. the quake was centered in modena but felt throughout the country from milan to venice. the jolt flattened numerous buildings near the epicenter and sear kraus aftershocks forced evacuation of 3,000 miami. >> ama: the plan to tow a restored world war ii battle ship from richmond to southern california was put on hold this morning. rough seas put a to stop to plas to ferry the uss iowa in san

>> alan: thousands are expected to turn their eyes to the sky to watch a solar eclipse known as the ring of fire, when the sun will appear as a thin ring behind the moon. it should begin at 5:15 but the prime viewing time is 6:30. the chabot science center is hosting a viewing party. the last ring of fire eclipse was in 1994. >> nasdaq apologizes to facebook for, quote, botching friday's ipo. >> alan: the festival drawing hundreds to the theater for the greekfest.

oakland. there were cooking demonstrations, and greek dances. classes were held to give people lessons about the greek alphabet and the history of the culture. >> alan: leigh glaser is standing by to tell you about what you already know was a great day. >> leigh: a terrific day, and we're coming up now that annual eclipse starting right now. you can see the path of it is really going to take place to the north of the bay area. reno, chico, and eureka, the best viewing, and it's starting right now. we are looking at this annual eclipse beginning at 5:16. it will peak at 6:33. and will look like the sun is being gobbled away bit-by-bit by the moon and we're looking at 84% of coverage of the sun. now, remember, we always caution you, do not look at it with the bare eye, the naked eye.

elsewhere temperatures overnight tonight in the mid-to-low 50s. so, the weekend, high pressure responsible for bringing us a delightful last couple of days with temperatures inland, near 90 degrees today. this ridge of high pressure starting to break down and will do so overnight tonight and tomorrow, and as that jet stream starts to slide towards the south, onshore winds will pick up and that's when the cooling will begin and it starts tomorrow. you'll notice the temperatures, check them out tomorrow. coming down as much as ten degrees. santa rosa, 78. san francisco, overcast to start. some partial afternoon clearing. 63. interior east bay, antioch, livermore, low 80s. even see some mid-to-low 80s towards gilroy. santa cruz, overcast in the morning and partial afternoon clearing. check out the next seven days. you're going to feel it. wednesday, thursday, and friday, wind picks up, much cooler air mass by friday.
