police closed it off between 24th and 23rd streets after the huge tree branch fell off this tree. the branch hit the muni and power lines, causing the power o'to lean precariously. the pole fractured at the base. the city workers trimmed tree branch e -- branches. the power was knocked out for 12 homes. the j-line wag stalled. >> we waited for 50 minutes in embarcadero station because it wasn't announced in public that there was a tree felled. and it was a hassle. >> reporter: no one was injured, and there was no damage other than to that pole. neither muni nor pg&e crews would comment on camera. offcamera they told us hey had to work as fast as the could to restore service on the busy j church line.

we got a cowl back from pg&e and they told us they have braced the power pole and they still don't know whether or not they're going to have to replace it. but hey should know sometime very soon. >> ama: if you have your supercool eclipse shades you can run outside and check out the solar ecips. lillian kim is live from the shack bow -- shack -- chabot viewing party. >> the viewing party is sold out. 500 people gathered at the top deck to watch what comes around every two decades or so. the last time it was in the u.s. was in 1994. so no surprise the viewing party is packed. the eclipse is a partial solar eglimpse which the balloon -- moon blocks out 48% -- 84% of

the sun. and some areas will see a ring of fire, but near the bay area we'll be seeing what will eventually look like a bright crescent month. >> that will rotate around the top of the sun and turn 180 degrees and then the month moves out of the top left and ends at 7:40. so we're excited about it. this is the kind of event you don't need to be an astronomer to appreciate it. anyone can see it from their backyard. >> this is video that came from sacramento, and the eclipse from their vantage point appears to be farther long than here. looking at the sun directly can be damaging to the eyes. that's why here at shack -- chabot there are several telescopes will special filters that people are using, and these

special viewing glasses, so people came prepared. >> alan: the 101st 101st bay-to-breakers race made its way across san francisco with a mix of serious runners and odd ball participants. police made 19 arrests and some runners did need medical attention. john alston has more. >> you're our first gum by. >> is it gumby? must be the bay-to-breakers. 40,000 runners and walkers took partner san francisco tradition, now in it's 101st year. not everyone liked the tamer version of the race. >> i like the whole thing of the race. >> for the second year in a row floats and other contraptions with wheels were banned. alcohol was prohibited but that doesn't stop people from openly enjoying cocktails. police hasn't out citations. other partiers enjoyed a bird's eye view.

investigators and police returned to the site where hundreds of pot plants were discovered. it started at 4:00 yesterday morning inside a warehouse along the auto row section. investigators are trying to pinpoint the cause of the blaze and determine who rigged an illegal electrical system for the marijuana grow site. police say 500 pot plants were discovered inside. >> alan: developing news out of southern california where a massive pallet yard fire is burning for a second day. firefighters say they have control over the fire but it's not expected to be fully contained until tomorrow. about 60 crews responded to the fire that broke out around 6:00 p.m. last night in fontana. authorities say one firefighter suffered minor injuries. it was so intense smoke and flames could be seen for miles. the flames quickly spread from the yard to a trucking business next door. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. >> ama: the leading industrial powers of the world are meeting in chicago where a nato summit

is convened to discuss afghanistan and european missile defense. protesters are there right now outside of the schmidt -- summit. they're upset with the war in afghanistan and climate change and doeses of other issues. video shot shows tense moments between protesters and police. officers shoving protesters and one demonstrator throwing a hammer. right there in the lit spot -- at police. some protesters got trampled in the crowd. here's the latest on the rallies and the summit. >> reporter: that's nato meeting is a far cry from the 2010 summit in which allies agreed to a combat mission in afghanistan through 2014. now many, including france and canada, want out. and president obama brought afghan president hamid karzai to the nato meeting to insist the cam bat handover will take place in 2013. >> painting a vision post-2014

>> alan: you're looking at live pictures of a rare solar eclipse known others the ring of fire. it started an hour ago and in about 15 minute0s so the moon will partially eclipse the sun, leaving a ring of fire behind it. >> ama: the shot got much darker behind us as you can tell because the moon is, as you know alan, coming in front of the sun. and leigh glaser is here to tell us about it.

>> leigh: the shadow effect as the actual moon appears as it comes between the earth in the sun. just taking a big bite out of it, out of the sun. a wonderful crescent. you can notice as this gets closer, more partial, takes away a little more of the sun. it's going to get a little shadowy, a little darker here on earth. and we always tell you, too, and keep repeating this, you have to have proper eye apparel in order to solar -- solar shades we'll call then, eclipse shades, to see this with the naked eye. but it is fascinating, and our neighbors to the north. reno, chico, all the way up towards our reek car -- eureka, they're going to get a full total eclipse. we'll get a partial here, and this will move over, just like the lens and what is left, about 6:33 will be just the crescent

of the sun there. so, really a site to see. in fact here is a look at the path. reno, chico, eureka, they'll see the total eclipse, and for us here, it will be 84% coverage of the sun for us. it will peak at 6:33 and then once it comes over it has to go back over on the other side, so it will really last until 7:40 this evening. so what a treat for us, and what a treat because we have clear sky, and also some mild temperatures. highs today, 90s. antioch, 90. cloverdale, 90. 68 in san francisco. 82 in san san jose. right now, 86 in antioch. 77 in livermore. 59 in san francisco. low clouds and fog moving back inland overnight tonight. so that will mean the beginning of a cooling trend, and you're

definitely going to notice it through the week. so tooler tomorrow, and then windy and even more cooling expected as we head into wednesday, thursday, and friday. lows tonight, 40s near the coast. and the north bay. the rest of news the mid-to upper 50s, especially east bay. high pressure has been dominating our weather this weekend, bringing us mild conditions. it's going to weaken overnight and throughout the course of the work week. area of low pressure, and that is going to help to bring in the cooler air mass wednesday, thursday, friday. so, get ready for things to change, more onshore winds and the low clouds and fog will be moving back in as well. low clouds and fogs a 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. all of that will move further inland, and then back off the coast. we'll look for afternoon sunshine for monday. here's a look at the highs for tomorrow. notice the cooling.
