a rare ring of fire clips the -- grips the world as the

moon passes in front of the sun. >> it followed a narrow 8500 path for three and a half hours, but the phenomenon only lasted about five minutes at its peak. good evening. i'm alan wang. >> and i'm ama dates. the only safe way to watch the eclipse was to use special glasses. people who visited the science center in oakland had a pair of specs where they could catch the action. that's where lilian kim. hi, lilian. >> about 500 people gathered at the observatory deck and there was a lot of excitement. the last time we saw this type of eclipse was in 1994. this was when the eclipse was just beginning. but even then people were impressed. >> it just like a bit. >> the space and science center invited the public for a viewing party and to no surprise the event was sold out. just about everyone came prepared. people brought their special viewing shades and homemade

contraptions. >> the longer it is, the better the result. the larger the image. >> prime viewing time finally came at around 6:30 when the moon and the sun aligned. because of the moon's current distance from earth it could only cover 84% of the sun. instead of a complete blackout, the moon created a crescent shape. >> it looks like a smiley face. >> viewing parties took place throughout the bay area. a large crowd gathered in san francisco. in california the best view was north of us in redding and chico. the people there were able to see what this type of eclipse is famous for, the ring of fire. she says she was a little disappointed she didn't get to see the halo affect,. >> having an event here and having the science center to be available to people in the bay area makes it feel like a thing more than standing in the middle of the desert. >> the eclipse cast some

interesting shadows. this is what the side of the building looked like as it filtered through the tree leaves. >> it is totally cool. >> this is the beginning of the fun. next month there thrb a lunar eclipse followed by venus crossing the face of the sun. >> the transit of venus is something you won't be able to see again for the rest of our lives. >> and those events will be happening back to back. the lunar eclipse will be on june 4th and the venus transit will be happening the very next day. live in oaknd la, lilian kim -- live in oakland, lilian kim, abc news. >> the eclipse was visible in asia. shear what it looked like in tokyo where it was broadcast live on tv. an eclipse such as this hasn't been visible since 1839. in the philippines, the eclipse happened when the sun was rising, but still it didn't disappoint as the crowds gathered to watch the phenomenon. >> after 20 years the contra costa county school district is about to payoff its

bankruptcy debt. meanwhile other school districts are dangerously close to falling into the same situation. tonight abc7 news reporter thomas roman has a look at what the districts do not want to experience. >> in 1990, the school district made education history by going bankrupt. >> the first school district in the state of california and indeed the country now has a chance to get out of bankruptcy. >> he is the president of the school district's board, and they managed to payoff the debt through years of program cuts, layoffs and larger class sizes. >> we have been vigilant. we have been fiscally responsible, and we set aside the money year by year. albeit out of the vats and the pockets of the students. >> they had a debt of $42.5 million after 1990. the state loaned the district money at 6% interest and placed it in receivership. all of that will be gone come june 1st when they payoff the last $10 million. >> but it is a cautionary tale

not just for us, but for many other school districts. >> the govern area disa sh dash the governor's tax increase bill has to pass, if not others will face millions in new cuts ssments he was a parent of school-age children when the hammer fell in 1990. >> we were going to have to close the school district down early and children weren't going to be able to graduate that year. and it was a terrible, terrible thing. >> now that she is a board member and weathered the bankruptcy, the district needs more funding if it plans to restore programs and reduce class sizes. >> we are no where near out of the woods. we are still in a state that is 47th out of 50th in funding of schools. >> if passed it will give the district an additional $14 million a year for five years. that's fine for west contra costa. the school districts like oakland and vallejo are in receivership, and there is no sense when they will be able to retire their debt. thomas roman, abc7 news.

>> thanks, thomas. we have new information involving pg&e gas lines. the san francisco chronicle is reporting the utility giant accidentally over pressurize its natural gas pipelines. it did it more than 120 times after the deadly 2010 san bruno pipeline explosion. the majority of this year's surge has reportedly happened on the distribution lines. those are the pipes that snake through the neighborhoods and deliver gas to homes and businesses. the top gas official says he is alarmed and he is pledging to crackdown on the problem. >> in san francisco, pg&e crews have finished repairing a power pole hit by a massive tree branch that left residents without power for hours. the huge branch came crashing down this afternoon landing squarely on church and elizabeth street. it took pg&e crews almost six hours to repair the pole. the tree landed on tracks. police had to close off church street between 24th and

>> pretty amazing. what a deal. let's check in with leigh glaser right now with a check on our weather. hi, leigh. >> hi, everyone. hope you had a nice viewing of the partial eclipse earlier this evening. we actually had some clear sky at this hour. some high and low clouds are starting to venture in toward the bay area. check out the numbers right now. antioch is still at 72 degrees right now. mild there. compare that to half moon bay. 52 and overcast moving in. 58 in san rafael. here is a look at the highlights. increasing clouds overnight. a cool down will begin tomorrow. you will definitely notice that. we will continue on the windy and much cooler weather theme right on in through much of our upcoming workweek. here is a look at our close up satellite. a nice ridge of high pressure brought us the sunshine and the mild temperatures today. but you can see how this is quickly starting to erode. there are some of the high clouds that is coming in our

direction. they will be spilling in, and we will have filtered high clouds throughout the day tomorrow. the temperatures tonight around the coast and extreme north bay communities are dipping into the upper 40s. the rest of us are pretty much in the midto upper 50s and out toward the east bay anterior valley areas and mid to low 50s as we head toward oakland and san francisco. so the high pressure is in control this weekend, but you can see the cold front area of low pressure to the north of us. that's what is going to sweep in. there is a cooler parcel of air especially as we head into thursday and friday. and also at least for tomorrow, it will start the cooling trend for us and it will bring in some of the higher clouds. rain associated with this system right now. it looks like it will stay well to the north of us. but we may get into some of the mist and drizzle as we head into monday night and early tuesday morning. here is a look at your highs tomorrow. antioch today you reached a high of 90 degrees. so we are really going to cut you down tomorrow. the cooler influence will bring you only 82 tomorrow.

in tonight's headline. headline millions enjoyeded the ring of fire solar eclipse at the space and science center. people watched in awe as the moon covered 96% of the sun leaving a halo of fire behind it. >> the contra costa school district is days away from being solve vent. it was the first school district to declare bankruptcy in 1990. come june 1st, the district will make the last payment on the debt at the cost of layoff and larger class sizes. and the beta breakers brought out 40,000 runners and 100,000 spectators. it turned into a street party with alcohol, crazy costumeses and nudists. the winner took home $37,000. well, an abc news exclusive tonight, a look inside america's allout hunt for the most wanted al-qaeda bomb maker. abc's martha ratis reports
