mountains, maybe a few sprinkles. highlights today will be the cool temperatures from the upper 50s at our coast to the low 70s in our inland valleys. around livermore and santa rosa. atmosphere still a little moisture and a little unstable but we begin a warming trend tomorrow. i'll have better warmup mid-week coming up. >> terry: happening right now caltrans says good progress is made on the dumbarton bridge which closed for the weekend last night. the final group of cars driving across the bridge before they shut it down. since then crews completed a concrete demolition phase. they are raising the bridge to install a new expansion joint for earthquake safety. it's expected to stay closed until 5:00 tuesday morning. overall project scheduled for completion early next year. >> san francisco construction work has the entire n-judah and

parts of the j-church lines closed for the next nine days. they are putting in a new bike line and repaving the area. >> our exclusive waze smart phone app, get through i-too tuints or android market. go to abc7news.com/waze. bay area police agencies are looking for a vehicle connected to a car to car shooting that brought freeway traffic to a halt in redwood city last night. the shooting happened in menlo park. police finally located the victim in his car on highway 101. traffic backed up south of woodside road. the driver of a green compact was weaving through traffic trying to catch up to him. >> it pulled up alongside of him and started shooting. >> he continued driving and made some phone calls. one of those people that he

called 911 called the police and were able to help locate where we were at. >> victim was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening wounds. the gunman got away. they will process the car for evidence. today's volunteer search for sierra lamar has been called off. parents of the 15-year-old are asking people to enjoy the holiday weekend. a concert was held in gilroy to raise money for future search efforts. people gathered for a live auction and music. police believe she was murdered and they have arrested a 21-year-old on kidnapping and homicide charges. >> the family of a man who drowned on memorial day last year in alameda while rescue crews stood stood by is now suing the city and county. he waded into the water. he was suicidal. zach's sister and brother are

accusing the city of negligence. city officials have said rescuers could not go into the water because the water rescue program had been de-funded if. they will be a memorial today at 4:00. >> memorial day weekend is just beginning and we had a couple problems at san francisco beaches. they pulled a swimmer off around crissy field and then they had another incident in the sea cliff area. the coastguard coastguard is expecting an increase in those calls. >> this is rescue that is much too common in the bay area. they were called to sea cliff avenue on san francisco, on the stretch ser a 13-year-old boy who along with his friend tried to climb the cliff's face. >> they both tried to climb. one got stuck, the other went back down and called 911 to get a response. >> both boys were fine.

both were checked out at a local hospital. these photos were taken at about 2:45. you can see swimmers plucking a teen out of the bay on east beach. they saw the teen flashing and next a helicopter was overhead and the teen was brought to shore. >> they put him down and he looked a little dazed and nothing was happening. he looked like he was on his side and chilled. >> these two incidences show the need for common sense and water safety this memorial day weekend according to the coastguard. >> we anticipate there will be a lot of people on the water. we also have a scheduled tow of the u.s.s. iowa. >> that will attracted many boats on the way out. the celebration of the golden gate bridge will bring a lot of

people out on boats. chris and brad will be on the water and doing exactly what the coastguard suggests. >> we make sure everybody has life vests, flares and horns and make sure they are in good coastguard. >> they want all the boats thating on the water to be sea worthy. >> terry: san francisco police have released a new video. it was taken moments before an assault at golden gate park that left a man in critical condition. here is it is. if this looks familiar to you, police ask you to give them a call. this is sharon meadow on the eastern end off of canyon street. police believe the victim was here just before the attack last sunday. he was dressed as a troll doll and they were celebrating the bay to breakers race. he was knocked unconscious

vati-leak. the pope's right-hand man, 48-year-old man often seen riding in the pope mobile was arrested wednesday in possession of secret documents. a series of documents showed miss management had he highest levels of the church. they are investigating the leaks and they think they have their man. >> state prison officials are refusing a federal court order to return a drug imported used in executions. the drug had to be imported when the only domestic supplier stopped making it. california received a new supply from a british manufacturer just before the british government banned an export but then they ordered the import returned because it wasn't inspected by the fda. state correction officials will

keep the drug while fda challenges that court ruling. >> there are only a handful of people in the bay area that can look at the golden gate bridge and say their grandfather worked on it. far fewer still can say he fell from it, survived and then went back to work on it. here is reporter heather ishimaru on just such a man, the first of four generations of iron workers. >> he was already a seasoned iron worker by the time this picture was taken in 1935. he had cut his teeth on the original carquinez bridge in 1927. >> that was one of the first spans in the bay area. >> from there he worked across jobs in the western state. working at heights in the elements and driving rivets. >> dad always would say, after a drink, 90% guts, 10% no how. >> it was from the bay bridge he

spotted his next job across the bay. >> they could see the towers going up on the golden gate. his raising gang said we have to get on. they wanted to get on the big jobs. they want to be able to say, i worked on that job. >> reporter: he almost didn't survive that job. a safety net broke his fall but he still crashed into the marin headlands but spent 12 weeks in the hospital. then he went back to work. he was founding member of the halfway to hell club made of those that survived falls from the golden gate. >> he said he was halfway to hell and halfway to heaven and neither place wanted him so he kept on working. >> he was one year old when he fell. dick, too, became a iron worker and union leader. so did his friends and now a fourth generation. angelo and johnny are iron worker apprentices.

>> every job site i go on, i'm told i have big boots to fill. they are working on the new san francisco general hospital center. these days the apprenticeship lasts four years. in the grandfather's day there was no training except what you got on the job. >> training has evolved. wages and benefits have increased dramatically. bottom line, it's still hard ass work. there is no getting around it. >> the golden gate bridge was the first all union project, now his grandson is a union leader. >> in the day when they built the golden gate, there was probably in the thousands of workers. now building of the new bay bridge, it's maybe 10% of the amount. >> like the bridges he worked on later in the life, al became an icon himself, representative of the iron workers who helped

the weekend, of the hour. 75 years old as of tomorrow. big celebration. bridge is closing at 9:30 night. lisa says it will be fine out there. heavy smoke from a massive wildfire in new mexico is prompting air quality warnings into arizona for the holiday weekend. the fire has destroyed a dozen cabins and scorched 130 mild of wilderness. six hikers had to be rescued after becoming disoriented in that smoke. more than 500 firefighters are battling it. talking about fires but cooler weather and then bridge parties. >> lisa: yeah, that's right. we have the onshore component and going to mix out the marine layer. you saw the bridge, nice and sunny. lake tahoe, not done with the

snow yet. 36 degrees and cloudy but truckee, 34 and reporting snow at this hour. emeryville, low 50s with low clouds and breezy winds out towards concord. north wind gusting to 20 at our coast. we will be looking at delays at sfo with the low clouds. 40s still holding on at this hour with redwood city at 49. your average high at this time of year in the low 70s, ten degrees shy of that. 49 in san rafael and we'll be looking at a little more moisture to stick around this afternoon for the possibility of a light shower in the higher elevations. here is our visibility, two and a half miles half moon bay. we have clouds around oakland and hayward and visibility here a little bit limited at six miles. elsewhere, not too bad but the winds continued to hold on at this hour. low clouds will continue to thin out. notice along the san mateo coast

we've had drizzle and mid-level clouds perhaps in the higher elevations around napa today. that could bring a few showers this afternoon. we have reports of light rain in livermore and milder right in time for the weekend and monday, memorial day and warmer pattern, wednesday, thursday. we're going to cool off after memorial day. here is the computer animation that shows still a little bit of moisture sneaking into the higher elevations of the north bay. if you are headed to the sierra nevada that is where we'll have showers, possibility of hail as the area of low pressure that brought moisture here yesterday continues to lift on out. satellite and radar composite shows that counterclockwise twist in the upper atmosphere, that is where the low continues to lift off. and atmosphere becoming more stable later on today as the

battle rages between cyclists and motorists. here is capital correspondent nannette miranda about the story >> you have cars passesing from behind. that is actually the scariest part. >> 16-year-old student knows it can be harry to share the road with cars. he got hit from behind and ended up with bruises. >> i would push myself up off the car and i fell on to the curb. thankfully i wasn't hurt. >> they just approved a bill requiring drivers to give cyclists at least a three-feet safety zone when there is no cycle lane as they are passing from behind. it could reduce fatal collisions. californians want more confidence to ride their bikes because half of their trips are three miles are less. >> they are afraid to because

below or alongside, there is no bad angle for the golden gate bridge. >> terry: he is so right. he is so right. big party this weekend. what is going on. >> we'll see warming conditions over the weekend. but today areas of low pressure that brought the precip and snow in the sierra. marine layer is up to 1,000 feet a little better than that in some spots. we'll continue to see the low clouds and some mid-level clouds around the bay today. right now it is cloudy or clouds hanging around hayward and fremont and along our coast. look at the temperatures still 49 in redwood city. 11 degree spread from san rafael redwood city to 60 in antioch. in between we have the 50s. north bay has the better visibility and around half moon bay, two and a half mile visibility. it will be quite cool at our beaches to 60 here.

a little warmer further south and plenty of clouds from watsonville and salinas. six mile visibility around hayward. we will be looking at temperatures to come up to around normal today in the areas of low clouds will hang out from the san mateo coast down through santa cruz and monterey. possibility still exists for a shower in the higher elevations of the north bay and east bay today as the area of low pressure pulling away with that flow still has much of the bay area under the influence of that. by tomorrow we'll see milder conditions from memorial day as well as. but the warmest days come the middle of next week. computer animation shows about 2:00 or 3:00 today, moisture to the north of us. we'll have build-up in the higher elevations and maybe an isolated shower and the rest of us will enjoy partly cloudy and sunny conditions. there is the low. it's pulling into nevada and

taking the moisture with it. plenty of showers remain for the sierra nevada. snow this morning around truckee with temperatures right around freezing and as that low heads out, the moisture will be moving out of sierra nevada as well today. high pressure building in. it's going to keep the marine layer with us but warmer tenancy and milder afternoons. today well below average with snow as far as south as the southern sierra. breezy with temperatures only in the 40s for the north sierra. 64 big sur and winds will be on shore. that will help to mix out the low clouds and fog. and 65 grandson the bay with partly cloudy skies. a's taking on the yankees, 66 in fremont and 60s here. with the air show, hopefully no problems in hollister. 64.

>> he has been living in this oakland home for more than 25 years. she says she paid a contractor $3600 to make repairs she had to have someone else redo. >> this part of the house was damaged. there were a lot of cracks. and mr. wilson left it undone. >> this is man she is referring to. kalid wilson. he was leader too remodel rehome but never finished it. wilson was convicted of three felony counts in 2008. the convictions came after separate investigations by "7 on your side" and state regulators revealed that he was working without a license and cheating customers out of thousands of dollars. >> she somebody that will take an illegally large down payment up front. do very little work and then not come and finish the job. >> a judge sentenced him in 2008 to 8 months in county jail and

ordered him to pay $23,000 in restitution, but authorities continue to receive complaints about him after his release the following year. >> he still using the license number that was revoked which has resulted in the newest criminal filing which there is another warranty. >>. >> it was very upset. he presented himself so well. >> reporter: that is the same thing others told us several years ago before his conviction. >> all i needed to do was call the state contractor's license board and find out his license was not in good standing and i wouldn't be in the mess i'm in today. >> unfortunately a lot of californians don't know a contractor may not ask for more than 10% down or a thousand dollars whichever. so if anybody asks you for more than thousand dollars up front
