>> a final sendoff, piece of american history passing under the golden gate bridge just moments ago. the uss iowa battleship. good afternoon. i'm alan wang. i'm ama daetz. we're live at the golden gate bridge in san francisco. >> reporter: the uss iowa it one of the longest-serving ships in the u.s. navy fleet. so the massive battleship was literally history in motion. it's had an interesting history for the bay area. the last cruise through her was bittersweet for some residents.

[applause] >> with a few cheers, the last rope was released, untethering the battleship from the port of richmond. he saw it in 1945. >> ed made the davison look like a canoe. >> he was serving on a destroyer. >> in the harbor they announced that church services will members on the iowa. knock off all card playing and the smoking lamp is out. >> the iowa is one of the last dread naughts build for the u.s. navy fleet. watching it cruise through san francisco barrack it's clear why iowa was a show-stopper of military might in world war ii. >> iowa carried roosevelt and all of his top military to casa blanca to meet with stalin and churchill.

>> during service in the 1980s, an disment turret number two caused an explosion that killed 47 sailors but continued in service until 18990, -- 1990 when it became part of the moth ball fleet. for the last few years a crew has brought the battleship back to showcase condition. now as they watch the iowa slip under the going going for -- under the golden gate bridge, some appreciate it. >> i'm glad to see got down there. it's going to be a museum. a memorial to the 47 men we lost in turret 2. >> the volunteers here push to have the uss iowa be a floating museum at port here in san francisco but the plan was nixed in 2005 because of political situations at the time. now it will take four days for the massive battleship to be towed down to san proceed -- san

pedro where it well be a floating museum in southern california. >> ama: in other news, san bruno police are continuing their search for a suspect who fired at officers. just before 2:00 this morning police responded to a call about a group of people walking on san bruno avenue. officers arrived to see a carful of individual leaving the scene. police stopped the car and three people turn off running. one turned and fired on officers who returned fire. police captured two suspects and one is at large. police continue to look for a gunman in connection to a shooting that brought traffic to stop on highway 101 last night. the shooting happened in men low -- menlo park. >> alan: right now, residents in alameda are holding a memorial weight out to mark the death of a suicide man. he died last memorial day

weekend. yesterday his relatives filed a lawsuit against the city and county of alameda because first responders stood by and let him drown. the first responders even waited until a beach-goer swam out to retrieve the body. the fire department says it did not rescue zack because they were not certified in shore-based water rescues and after the incident the programs were reinstated. >> seismic work on the dumbarton bridge is on track. construct crews have been working around the clock since the brim was shut done last night. the over the three-day closure crews will replace major expansion joint on the western side of the bridge. >> the work is interesting. caltrans is installing the seismic joint. it's a two plates that fit over each other and allow the deck to expand over the earthquake so it gains 18 inches of movement after the work is done.

plan san bruno american flags are flying next the graves of thousands of fallen veterans buried ate golden gate national system sear. scotted did the honors and decorate nearly 113,000 graves. it's a memorial tradition that dates back more than 50 years. several volunteers have family members buried here. >> my brother, who served in the navy in the 50s, buried right up here at the top of the mountain near the main flag pole. makes me proud to see our young men and women, and the other adults, come out here. >> we come out here to honor all the troops and i think this we'reey have 30,000 people out here, and it's great to honor them. >> golden gate is one of america's largest national cemeteries. >> ama: still ahead on abc-7 at 4:00. an embarrassing scandal for the vatican. a member of the pope's household

>> ama: today the vatican is trying to plug a leak after the pope's butler was accused of leaking files. he was arrested after secret documents were found in his vatican city apartment. the butler is often seen by the pope's side in public. riding in front of the pope mobile. he has been with the pope since 2006. documents leaked in recent months have pointed to power struggles and accusations of corruption. >> alan: heat, potential flooding and wildfires. the weather hasn't been cooperating for holiday plans this memorial day weekend. here's more on the extreme weather sweeping across the

nation. >> this memorial day weekend may be most memorable for the weather. a presummer heat wave is washing much of the country in torrid temperatures. 899 expected in st. louis. a blistering 94 in atlanta. indianapolis, the indianapolis 500 will be burning rubber with an expected high of 96 degrees on sunday. the hot weather didn't bother beach goers in boston, but heat exhaustion was an unwelcome at this high school graduation in georgia, leaving invite it guests craving to keep their cool. >> getting water, i've seep a couple that had to leave. >> the good news? hurricane bud turned out to be a dud. the once powerful storm with winds up to 115 piers piers -- miles-per-hour petered out butbeway of beryl off the coast of south carolina.

first commercial supply ship named dragon. the crew has until the middle of next week to unload supplies and refill the capsule with science experiments and equipment to be returned to earth. one astronaut says when she entered the dragger, smells like a brand new car. >> the new capsule smell. let's check in with. >> leigh: want to take a quick look at live doppler 7hd. we have scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms in the north bay. let's look closer. those near st. helena, this is what we're looking at. some bright yell lows and reds, denote something heavy showers moving through the area. knoxville road reporting light shower activity, and further south, moving in towards the vacaville area, putting this in motion, you can see the trajectory of this, from northwest down towards the southeast. so, all of this will be scooting

through the area early this evening, and then after sunset it should start to die down a little bit. let's jump over towards the lake tahoe area. check out these lightning strikes. right -- see them, right there. some isolated thunderstorms moved through. blue canyon as well as south lake tahoe reporting light rain as temperatures in the low 40s. looks like most of that moisture will move out this evening as well. it has been a cool, breezy day across the bay area but we did see plenty of sunshine in most locations, antioch, 67. 56 in san francisco. unseasonably cool. san jose, 63. managing 73 right now in santa rosa. getting more of a northerly wind trajectory and that's what we'll be in tomorrow. so we'll all see temperatures come up a few degrees. low clouds, mist and drizzle

overnight. warmer day tomorrow, and clouds near the coast. and get ready for a nice warming tread into the middle and latter part of next week. here's the lows tonight. generally wide-spread mid-to-low 50s across the bay area. some upper 40s in the north and east bay locations. mist and drizzle in the bay and coast tonight. low clouds and fog moving inland, and it's all because of this area of low pressure. it is slowly kicking off towards the east, and it will take the showers with it. so we'll say goodbye to this system overnight tonight, and then high pressure will start to build in. showers move to the east -- that was a really slow movement, wasn't it? and then high pressure will build in to bring us the return of plenty of sunshine, especially for the holiday, monday, warmer temperatures, patchy clouds near the coast. big day tomorrow. the showers move out tonight. we will look for low clouds and fog overnight tonight, and then
