just about 4:31 the day after memorial day. thank you for the company, i'm eric thomas. and i'm kristen sze. dumbarton bridge open. the span reopened ahead of schedule after closing through memorial day weekend for earthquake retrofiting work. amy hollyfield is live at the bridge. >> reporter: good morning. they were aiming for a 5 a.m. open, but instead got the bridge open at 3:00, it has a new seismic join. the dumbarton bridge is five inches higher than it was last week. it has a new layer of concrete and it is stronger. when the earthquake hits dumbarton is now better prepared. >> we cut across six lanes and bike and pet paths to replace the existing joint with a larger one. the larger seismic joint gives additional 18 inches of

are believed to be trapped under rubble. it was a 5.8 magnitude quake it hit northern italy around midnight, our time, that's 9 a.m. theirs, 25 norths northwest of bologna. offices were evacuated schools and other buildings evacuated as far south as florence. calls have overloaded the telephone network causing a system blackout and train services halted in some parts of northern italy. making all of this worse, the same area was hit by a 6.0 quake last week, seven people were killed. many buildings were destroyed or damaged. a lot of those that were damaged now fell today. seven thousand left homeless from last week still living in tented camps this morning when they were hit again.
