this morning, all eyes on wall street. >> stocks overseas, rising overnight, after the dow's best day of the year. investors everywhere are hopeful that europe has finally figured out the biggest financial mess since world war ii. it's the guilty verdict sure to make every driver with a cell phone think twice. the teen headed to jail for texting behind the wheel. and candidates go country. setting rhetoric aside for a night, to appear at the cmt music awards. and oops. cell phones going off at the worst time. even in the united states senate.

and good thursday morning, everyone. it is already a big day for overseas stock markets, following the stellar showing yesterday in the u.s. >> and today is shaping up to be another positive trading day, as well. dow, nasdaq and s&p futures all up before the opening bells. >> so, does this show the markets have turned a corner? abc's tahman bradley looks into it. >> reporter: hope for another big day on wall street today, after investors sent stocks surging, amid speculation the u.s. and europe will take action to further stimulate the economy. after a shaky start to the week, the dow soared yesterday, gaining 286 points, its best day of the year. the index is now up for 2012. the nasdaq also rose yesterday, up 2.4%. overnight, asian stocks rose. traders hearing news that the european union will act to save spanish banks. and here in the u.s., the fed is

exploring its options. >> the two pieces of news encourage investors to come back to the market and buy. >> reporter: the talk at the fed, more stimulus. some fed members are publicly discussing support for more stimulus if the u.s. economy weakens. fed chairman ben bernanke could provide further insight when he testifies before congress this morning. talk of fed help could not come at a better time. only 49,000 jobs were added in may, the weakest month for jobs growth in a year. >> employers are cautious to make the hires and bring people onboard and invest in their companies. they're staying more focused on driving productivity and increasing their revenue and profits. >> reporter: it's likely some will resist actions. the worry, the fed could breed inflation and investing. >> we're going to see a period of volatility. >> reporter: the dow jones dump erased the entire year's losses.

and the biggest loss of the year, last friday, after the dismal may jobs numbers. rob and paula? >> tahman bradley in washington. thanks, tahman. and shifting gears now. there's new word of a massacre in syria, as diplomats meet at the giants today, to work to end the ongoing violence. demonstrators took to the streets in syria yesterday, amid reports of killings in hama. late yesterday, secretary of state hillary clinton and 15 other officials, agreed to find a way to get syria's president to step down. also, secretary of defense, leon panetta, is in afghanistan to get an update from afghan commanders and to discuss a plan to bring troops home. panetta is defending u.s. drone strikes even as president ha mitt karzai claims civilians were killed by one yesterday. president obama is in the west this morning for fund-raising events and official business. last night, mr. obama got a warm welcome from high-profile gay

and lesbian supporters in los angeles. the president was expected to raise $5 million with stops in california over the next two days. he has attended 150-plus fund-raisers in his re-election campaign and heads to las vegas before returning home. and the romney campaign says the candidate's assets will be put in a blind trust, should he be elected. a week ago, romney revealed a fortune may be worth $250 million or more. in other news this morning, dozens of workers at puerto rico's largest airport are in federal custody this morning. the dea says they were part of two smuggling rings that shipped millions of dollars worth of cocaine to the u.s. mainland on passenger planes. about 14 tons worth of coke, in fact. many of those arrested worked for american airlines, while others worked for a baggage service company. a school trip from kentucky to washington, d.c. ended just a few minutes after it started. the bus run by the elementary school, flipped over on its side

on a highway on-ramp. dozens were hurt. and seven people were taken to the hospital. none of their injuries was serious. and an overheated household appliance may be to blame for this fire aboard this navy sub in maine last month. the fire started in a vacuum cleaner that workers use to clean up at the end of every shift. the navy says the repair bill will be, get this, 400 million bucks. possibly even more. >> wow. now, a landmark verdict, sending a serious warning to distracted drivers everywhere. a massachusetts teenager is going to prison for texting while driving, which led to a deadly accident. here's abc's amy robach. >> reporter: two families tearful when the verdict was or? >> guilty. >> reporter: massachusetts judge steven albany, thensed the maximum sentence. 2 1/2 years behind bars on 18-year-old aaron deveau, for

texting and driving, causing a head-on collision. deveau apologized. >> i made a mistake. and if i could take it back, i would take it back. >> reporter: this, after the victim's daughter tearfully addressed the court. >> i would wake up at night. and i would look for him and he wasn't there. >> reporter: deveau will also lose his license for 15 years. a license he only had for five months prior to the fatal accident. phone records show he received four text messages in the minutes before the crash. the last two, at 2:34 and 2:35 p.m. according to prosecutors, the collision occurred at 2:36. >> you weren't distracted by the cell phone you were using and texting? >> that is my testimony, yes. >> reporter: but each text takes a driver's eyes off the road for approximately 4.6 seconds. it's like driving an entire football field blindfolded. look at this bus driver.

now. american is in contract talks with the pilots' union and wants to change their benefits and work schedules. overseas, markets are up on hopes that the world's central banks, particularly the federal reserve here, will make moves to boost the economy. tokyo's nikkei average gained 106 points today. hong kong's hang seng rose 160. in london, the ftse opened higher. and as we mentioned earlier, on wall street, big day. the dow surged 287 points yesterday, its best day of the year. meanwhile, the nasdaq index was up 67. and the nasdaq exchange, speaking of which, is apologizing and making some amens for a major computer glitch when facebook went public. trades were delayed all day long. the nasdaq is offering $40 million in refunds and discounts to investment companies who lost money on facebook that day. a key site for job hunters has been hacked. linkedin, the professional social network has notified more

flooding that stranded drivers and shut down roads across town. now, for a look at morning road conditions. you're going to see lots of slick spots near cheyenne and denver. rain damping highways in the pacific northwest. and wet in the northeast and gulf coast. >> and if you're flying, possibly delays in seattle, dallas, houston, denver and d.c. a long list today. >> just a couple. >> everywhere. police have wrapped up the search at the man who confessed to killing etan patz, confiscating a computer hard drive, along with other evidence. his wife opened the door for officers when they arrived at the house in new jersey. it comes two weeks after hernandez made his surprising confession. but so far, there's been no evidence, actually, to back up his claim. opening statements are set for monday in the jerry sandusky trial. it only took two days to select jurors in the case.

many of the members have ties to penn state. but the judge says the connections shouldn't matter as long as the jurors can remain impartial. an investigation has been launched in chicago, after a pregnant woman claimed a police officer tased her. it started when tiffany rent got a parking ticket outside of a drugstore. police say she ripped the ticket up and dried to drive away. the eight month pregnant mom denies she did anything wrong. now, a very important health alert for parents. the fda has released a warning o for benzocaine. in rare cases, it can cause a possibly deadly situation. fatigue, confusion, gray skin and lips. if you notice the symptoms call 911 immediately. the fda says benzocaine should not be used for children younger than 2, except when advised by a doctor. president obama and mitt
