residents to keep their properties groomed for the sake of fire prevention. that's where sergio is right now. >> reporter: as part of the prevention, going door-to-door, firefighters are trying to point out growth like this, which, if left ununafeigned next to homes, can be dangerous fuel for a wildfire. so, along with responding, to emergency calls, marin county firefighters starter their warning to home openers about maintaining properties, keeping growth trimmed. helps in two ways. first, less potential fuel to help a fire leap on to a home, and second, cleared space around a house makes it easier for fire trucks to get close in the event of a fire. >> today is a red-flag day. we have a little breeze here. it's been hot all day, vegetation is dry. so we're here ready, prepared in case something happens.

>> reporter: and blazes like this give fire departments across the bay area reason to be on alert. this wind-whipped grass fire just off the guadalupe parkway in san jose quickly consumed eight acres before crews got it under control. on friday, this fire in the oakland hills prompted evacuation of three homes. a car slammed into a power pole and the powerline set off sparks that ignited a blaze that sped up the hill thanks to winds, and along with those two fires, last night crews near pittsburg were dispatched to a grass fire, and today crews in sew lap -- solano county were dispatched. so crews are being kept busy. so one of the ways they're able to be contained quickly is because of part of the red-flag warning, fire crews are dispatching resources. reporting live in marin county,

sir gentlemen quintana, abc-7 news. >> ama: wildfires are burning in 12 western states, the largest is in colorado where 8,000 acres of land burned in one day. here's the report. >> reporter: a wildfire in northern colorado is spreading. they're calling it the high park fire. it started saturday morning near fort collins, colorado can it is forcing evacuations. >> i can't imagine my house there is right now. i can't imagine -- how close the fire was and now i'm not going to have a home, and i have no place to go. >> some residents are unaccounted for. it's feared some may have been trapped. >> there are concerns whether everybody was able to get out of the evacuation area. we occasionally have some folks that don't have phones or refuse to evacuate, and we're looking into if there's any issues with that or concerns.

>> more than 250 firefighters are battling the flames, going door-to-door to make sure people get out safely. >> the primary goal is to get the people out of the way of the fire. >> reporter: officials say dry temperatures and high temperatures are to blame for the significant growth of the fire but what caused it is a mystery. >> alan: in sacramento, police are releasing very few details following the shooting deaths of four people inside a home. the shooting happened on 18th 18th street near 77th 77th avenue, just south of the state capitol. a fifth person ended up in the hospital. police believe he may be a suspect in the shooting was wounded after someone inside the home fired back. several of the victims' relatives rushed to the home when they heard what happened. >> devastating. they're in their 50s. still not a long time from now on. it's hard for all the uncles, the brothers and sisters, they're all here, too.

>> so far police have not revealed the victims' names. detectives originally believed this was home invasion but now they're not sure about the motive. >> ama: a suspect it gang member will learn if he will be sentenced to life in prison while his attorney claims some jurors regret convicting him of first degree mumpletd he was found guilty of the shooting deaths of three people in 2008. prosecutors accused ramos of pulling the trigger after mistaking one of the sons for a rival gang member. ram most -- ramos claims another man, riding in the same car, fired the fatal shots. >> said, i should have done this shierks have stopped this, how can you stop it if you didn't know it was going to health you cannot predict the future. >> he insists he helped police to find the annual gunman.

the district attorney says, quote, no good evidence has been presented that would undermine our confidence in the verdict. we stand by the verdict. >> alan: the oakland police department has been operating with more than 100 fewer officers than the number needed but now it's ready to beef up the force and start firing. they have funding for at least two police academies. that translates into more than 100 positions. an mix can'ts have to be 21, a high school diploma or ged. if you're interested, not a lot of time left. the deadline is tomorrow. >> caltrans claims there nor problems with the new span of the bay bridge and wants the sacramento bee to retract the story that says otherwise. last month the bee, citing anonymous sources, says there were defects in the east end of the tower. cal caltrans vase the structure passed safety checks,.

>> alan: san jose residents have a last chance to give their opinion about a possible hike in water rates. the water company wants to raise rates as much as 44% over the next three years. ironically company officials say water conservation by customers has cut into their earnings so they need to raise rates to keep up with expenses. the final public hearing on the matter is tomorrow morning at the public utilities commission in san francisco. the hearing begins at 10, the commission won't make a final decision until the fall. >> ama: home owners on the edge of foreclosure could be getting help. the plan by california lawmakers designed to help keep people in their homes. >> alan: the role the bay area is making in

have them ready this week and are designed to limit the run-around home owners experience from lenders. it will also allow home owners to sue in certain circumstances. opponents worry letting borrowers sue bankers could delay legitimate foreclosures. >> nasa is preparing for the launch of a new space x-ray telescope designed to hunt down black holes. it will be launched from an island in the pacific by wednesday. it will deploy a 33-foot mast a week into its flight. the mast allows mirrors to pop out which lets the telescope focus x-ray light into sharp images. it will look at remains of exploded stars and other objects. >> alan: gas prices are down at the pump. the latest numbers show they dropped by 16-cents a gallon over three weeks. the average cost is new 3.62 a
