eric thomas. and i'm kristen sze the high fire danger continuing this morning. >> meteorologist mike nicco who got the blue shirt yellow tie memo just as i did joins us with an update. good morning. serious nature. the lower levels the winds are calm. not up to 10 miles per hour up in the hills we need to be concerned. areas in red north bay mountains east bay hills and diablo range on the eastside of the santa clara fire. humidity levels are low and winds gusting 25 to 35 miles per hour until 8:00 tomorrow morning. -- this morning. >> this morning. gotcha mike, thank you. northern california firefighters say extra resources for red flag conditions are paying off. firefighters were able to contain this fire to less than an acre it broke out yesterday.

gusty winds and dry conditions kept crews on scene to make sure it didn't flare-up again. they had nine engines helicopter and bulldozer available. no injuries were reported. the conditions sparked a number of wildfires across the stay. firefighters are battling a stubborn fire in san bernardino county 20 acres have burned near apple valley 50% contained. a smaller fire burned 15 acres before it was contained. so far this year calfire has battled 1600 fires twice as many as this time last year. other states are challenged with fires. in colorado a fast growing forest fire forcing new evacuations. residents have been told to get out. the high park fire has burned 20,000 acres since saturday morning when a lightning

thursday friday saturday. katie marzullo abc7 news. 4:30 four. good samaritans made a dramatic rescue of a wash -- of a woman inside a sinking car in the oakland estuary. this all happened yesterday off doolittle drive. the woman managed to make it safely to shore appeared uninjured. not clear why the car plunged into the water. the same thing happened two weeks ago to another driver this woman was okay. police think she took a turn too fast then overcorrected. southern california authorities say u.s. come commerce secretary john bryson has been cited for felony hit-and-run following two accidents. officials say he's being treated at a hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries following the crashes saturday police say bryson was driving home saturday in san gabriel

when he allegedly hit another car on son the -- -- bryson stopped to speak with the driver of the car then left the scene. he caused a second collision minutes later. officers found him alone and unconscious. they don't believe alcohol or drugs played a in the crashes. -- played a role in the crashes. sacramento police think shooting deaths of four people in a home was a gang attack. family and friends waited outside the home where crime investigators worked inside. police believe the couple who lived there was targeted but won't say why. two houseguests staying with them were also shot. one survived. another man got into a shootout with the suspect killing him. friends say they were targeted the couple targeted performed expert wall healing rituals.

this morning -- a murder investigation. 31-year-old stephen martin died over the weekend. witnesses say he was punched and hit his head on the curb when he fell during an argument. he was wearing a green wig on race day. police released this video from may 20th showing sharon meadow at the east end of golden gate park where martin was beaten. investigators think digital pictures might help them find a us is spepblg. witnesses say martin argued with some men wearing 49er jerseys before he was punched. suspected gang member is expected to be sentenced to life in prison for the murders of three members of a san francisco family. a jury convicted 25-year-old edwin ramos in the shooting deaths of a man and two of his sons. prosecutors accused ramos of firing the fatal shots after mistaking one of the sons for

a rival gang member in an interview ramos told abc7 news that another man pull the trigger. ramos admits being in the car. today is the last day for anyone interested in becoming an oakland police officer to apply the department has been operating with more than 100 fewer officers than the number needed. oakland police have secured funding for two police academies. they are expected to graduate more than 100 new officers. applicants need to be 21-years-old with a high school diploma or g.e.d.. san jose residents have one last chance to give their opinion about a hike in water rates. the water company wants to raise rates 43% over three years. water conservation has cut into their earnings so they need to raise rates to keep up with expenses. the final public hearing begins 10 a.m. at meeting room in san francisco. the commission won't make a

large number of broken escalators at strain stations. a special person tells abc7 news only 16 were out of service last weekend nine located at busy downtown stations. last week 29 escalators were broken. the agency says they hope repairs will be finished sometime this week. new lends support for the governor's initiative to raise income and sales tax. 52% say they would approve raising taxes to prevent deep cuts to education and public safety. 35% are opposed. the governor's proposal would raise income tax for seven years on households that make more than $250,000 a year also a quarter cent sales tax increase that everybody would pay. volunteer coaches are about to undergo more scrutiny. new rules they will be forced to follow, starting tomorrow. the hunt for the gunman who turned a pool party near a

wednesday. the warmth returns father's day weekend. good morning. we have better news now as you head through 680 all lanes reopened northbound at highway 24. traffic is flowing well this traffic is very light northbound for headlights southbound also good for most commuters towards highway 24 the roadwork is gone there. but, we are still keeping an eye on it through the oakland maze. it is blocking the westbound 80 connection ramp to eastbound 580. you are forced on to 880 at this point this is scheduled until 5:30 this morning. if you are heading towards the bay bridge toll to the right a nice light commute so far no problems heading into san francisco but, if you are heading to the open as katie marzullo mentioned you can bart no delays. get off at the colma station

not daly city station if you are driving park at candlestick free coffee on amtrak's capital corridor this morning. new study will have travelers breathing a sigh of relief over tsa full body scanners. researchers say they pose little risk. radiation for the scanner reaches through the skin into organs but the levels are lower than those of other x-ray procedures like mammograms this is the first independent review of those controversial scanners. the study will be in the next issue of medical physics with muni officials secured four million dollars towards a plan to provide free rides for the city's youth. muni officials have approved a pilot program that will provide 40,000 low income youths into the city with free rides. the plan was contingent on getting five million dollars in recently tall -- regional transportation money. they will try to determine how
