good wednesday morning many thanks for join us, i'm kristen sze. i'm eric thomas. redwood city fire has forced residents out of their homes. two cars caught fire in a carport after midnight the flames spread quickly to the eight unit complex. the fire destroyed two apartments and smoke damaged most of the other units. the red cross is helping eight people. amy hollyfield is at the scene and will bring a live report coming up. new, berkeley moving forward with having voters decide whether to ban sitting on sidewalks as a way of moving homeless off streets. opponents made their feelings known during a meeting that stretched past midnight. terry mcsweeney is live in berkeley with the results. >> reporter: by 6-3 the city council has decided to let voters decide in november whether this city needs a no

sit ordinance between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. in commercial areas like telegraph avenue to go with its no lie ordinance already on the books. take a look at the meeting. early this morning they made the decision it got heated at times overnight. in the early hours they passed it. stand up for the right to sit, the rallying cry outside that meeting. the mayor says now people lying on the sidewalks are approached by city ambassadors who are there to offer assistance. and they i go them a ticket, if necessary. usually they start out with a warning. as soon as someone who is lying down sits up they are no longer breaking the law and no longer city influence. the sitting on sidewalks intergearing with businesses and foot -- interfering with businesses and foot traffic. >> they invite the person into the city attorney's office and they say let's make a deal. we agree with you we waive

citations if you go into services. >> reporter: opponents say it is illegal, unneeded and only going to be bad news for the homeless going to lead to harassment of those who can least handle harassment and can't afford the fines. in a city where strong debate is a way of life, there's going to be a lot of that leading up to this know's election whether the city of berkeley wants to have a law against sitting on the sidewalk. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. 4:3 . this morning, 4500 nurses at 11 sutter health hospitals are staging a one-day strike. the latest walk-out by workers. sutter health nurses have been working without a contract for a year. they are fighting a proposed hike in health benefit co-pay and end to health care for

retirees. sutter says it cannot afford the costs. the hospital will use replacement nurses today. san jose police interviewing witnesses to the fatal shooting of a teen-year-old boy in front of an elementary school -- witnesses say the teenager was shot several times by someone in a passing car. he died at the scene becoming the city's 19th homicide victim this year. police believe a handgun was used. they are hoping to get tips. this morning pg&e and the san francisco fire department are investigating how a natural gasline ignited and fooled a fire in the portola district late yesterday afternoon the flames spread quickly after a construction worker hired to renovate one of the buildings tried to hook-up a gasline. crews contained the fire to a dental office and three-story building. it took pg&e more than two

hours to shut off the gasline which has many residents troubled. >> the whole block could go up. i'm a lot concerned. >> pg&e insists they followed protocol and couldn't shut off the gas immediately because the fire was on top of the main cut off point. crews had to use a secondary valve. the construction worker was badly burned and being treated for life-threatening injuries. pg&e spent much of yesterday and most of the night dealing with another problem, downed now we are blocking a highway. a car hit a pole on highway 4 near hercules. the car burst into flames and the pole and power lines fell across the road the driver escaped unharmed the hotlines kept crews away for several minutes.

they didn't open lanes until 2:30 this morning. pg&e worked late into the night to refor -- restore power. the wife of ross mirkarimi is expected to ask the court for permission to extend her stay in venezuela. this is last month when dan noyes interviewed eliana lopez. chronicle reports she will seek another two month extension before her current extension expires saturday. the ethics commission is scheduled to begin its hearing next tuesday over mayor lee's attempt to remove mirkarimi from office. a man involved in a shootout with federal agents will remain behind bars. appeals court reversed a judge's accident granting bail to the man on the condition he write a series of book reports. investigators say mobley tried to sell a grenade launcher to an agent in march. during the deal gun erupted.

a judge granted him $150,000 bail if he promised to read and write for 90 minutes a day. prosecutors appealed and the 9th circuit ruled in their favor yesterday. the board of supervisors of san francisco decided to fast track negotiations with the warriors to build a new arena near at&t park. warriors want to build new arena by 2017 at piers 30 and 32 south of the bay bridge. the board passed a resolution that waives competitive bidding and gives warriors exclusive rights to develop the property. it will begin working with the team on a detailed description of the project and report back to the board in september. as we were leaving the station last night after doing the primetime newscast, it wasn't drizzley now it is. >> we couldn't get away from each other, here we are again.

george zimmerman is facing perjury. she is accused of lying to a judge about the couple's finances as her husband was being released on $150,000, it carries a sentence of up to five years and $5,000 fine. she has posted her own bail but the judge revoked her husband's bail. george zimmerman is awaited trial from a jail cell. in arizona voters are sending democrat ron barber to washington to finish the term of former representative gabby giffords. he won yesterday's special election over republican jesse kelly. giffords resigned a year after she was shot in the head to focus on recovery. barber was also injured in the shooting rampage that killed six, giffords stayed out of the campaign for the most part but barber got a hand from give forces and her husband this past weekend. >> thank you for your support. >> thank you.
