good morning. just about 5:01 a.m. on this wednesday, thank you for joining us, i'm eric thomas. and i'm kristen sze. several redwood city residents lost their homes this morning when their apartments burned. the fire spread quickly. amy hollyfield is live, what is going on? >> reporter: we are just learning from firefighters there are signs this appears to have been deliberately set. investigators are on the scene. they are taking a close look right now trying to figure this one out. they got the call around 12 threurpby this morning in redwood city that an apartment building was on fire. it looked like it was the rear part of the building. firefighters described it as heavy. then it started looking like it started in some cars at the scene of cars parked near or

under the complex in the carport then spread to the building. when firefighters arrived the 27 people who live inside had already evacuated safely. firefighters say because it is is up a condensed area they didn't hesitate to call a third alarm. >> no injuries. the surrounding buildings, were not damaged or involved in any way, which was another good piece of work on our part. >> reporter: there were five seven cars parked in the rear of the building it appears that's where the fire started and spread to the apartment building. right now investigators say this does look suspicious. two units in the apartment were destroyed. a total of eight were affected. firefighters tell me, they are going to be here for several hours trying to figure out how this fire started. if someone deliberately set. if so, then why? amy hollyfield, abc7 news.

coming up on 5:03. the end of a contentious meeting that ran past midnight the berkeley city council voted 6-3 to draft a measure that restricts sitting on public sidewalks a it is-in objecting to the law that targets homeless has been growing. the mayor and two councilmembers say the measure will give the city leverage in directing the hopeless to city-funded programs that include chiropractic, dental and other services. last night's vote authorizes the staff to draft a ballot measure for voters to decide in november. terry mcsweeney will have a live report from berkeley coming up. this morning the parents of missing morgan hill teenager sierra lamar are expected to announce an increase in the reward for information. the announcement is set for 8:30 this morning. searchers will head out after

the parents make a plea to help find their daughter. she vanished on her way to school march 16th. 21-year-old antolin garcia-torres is charged based on evidence found in his car. this morning former san jose elementary schoolteacher scheduled to be back in court on charges he produced and possessed child porn. the 50-year-old was arrested two weeks ago. he was placed on leave last august from will rogers elementary after police launched an investigation. officials have said investigators told them there is no indication any students in the district were victims. jurors in the molestation trial of jerry sandusky are poised to hear more graphic testimony today. katie marzullo is live in the breaking news center. yesterday's testimony was emotionally charged. >> reporter: it was and

graphic. jurors actually cried during the testimony and they could be in for more of the same today. two major players testified yesterday. victim number 1 took the stand. he was the first to report abuse and his accusations started the investigation into jerry sandusky he was 13 when he says sandusky abused him he's now 18. coach mcqueary testified he is the assistant coach who says he backed in on sandusky raping a buy in the penn state locker room he gave graphic testimony. he said he slammed a er to break things up. he says sandusky and the child both saw him. >> he told the jury, i'm sure about it. and there's no mistake that this was extremely sexual in nature. and it was something that was horrible. >> reporter: that occurred in 2001. other accusers, including vick number 1 say abuse also occurred at sandusky's home.

jon shainman is accused of abuse -- jerry sandusky is accused of abusing 10 boys. we expect to see jerry sandusky arrive at the courthouse any minute. this morning, j.p. more than chase ceo jamie dimon plans to apologize before members of congress for trading loss that has cost the -- cost the bank more than two billion dollars. he says the bank has taken steps to make sure it doesn't happen again. he says jpmorgan chase mounted a strategy to reduce risk but that backfired when one of the divisions added risk instead. he says the bank has named a new leader for the division responsible for the loss and now conducting a review of what went wrong. san jose city council wasting no time in taking action to shrink pension benefits for new hires. they voted 9-1 yesterday to

pay half the cost of pensions. new pensions will have a higher retirement age and smaller pay out than current workers receive. 70% of san jose voters approved measure b which sets limits on pensions. pensions approved are maximum allowed under measure b. transportation commission meets this morning expected to approve four million dollars in funding for san francisco's muni program for low income youths. muni officials approveed the program in april that will provide free bus rides for 40,000 low income youths in the city. officials will now have to determine how to raise remaining one million dollars needed for the program. riders can get a freebie on ac transit. the agency will try to entice new riders by giving away vouchers good for five rides across the bay. you can load them on to your

clipper card. it will take place june 26th, noon to 2 p.m. in san francisco trips normally cost $4.10y each way. nasa scheduled a different journey for new telescope. at 8:30 this morning a jet will takeoff from a remote pacific island strapped to the top will be a rocket containing the nuclear telescope. the jet will lawn. the rocket at 40,000 feet. the telescope will spend two years hunting for black holes at the center of our galaxy. uc berkeley's space center will operate the telescope. another important job for big blue. >> that's right, go bears! proud alum here. 5:08. we'll see blue skies after the greys. >> right. >> definitely grey out there, especially along the coast into the bay.

restore some services, including opening four new libraries. and the new community center. the mayor wants to allocate additional funds for gang prevention, pay for maintenance on most traveled roads and develop 11 new parks. teachers will take a major pay cut in the next school year they voted to be paid for nine fewer days and take additional 1% cut to make up for the money they are losing from the ongoing budget crisis. nay event teachers association says this new contract will cost the typical teacher nearly $7500 during the next school year. other employees reached similar concessions. voters turned didn't a school parcel tax last week that would have restored some of the lost funding. some summer vacation are getting more expensive. united airlines has enacted new baggage fees. passengers have to pay $100 each way to check a second bag

5:29 on this wednesday morning thanks for joining us i'm eric thomas. and i'm kristen sze. in redwood city a fire has forced two dozen out of their homes. investigators say it may be arson. it started when two cars caught fire in a carport after midnight the flames spread quickly to an apartment complex the fire destroyed two apartments and smoke damaged most of the other units. the red cross is helping at least eight people with temporary housing. amy hollyfield is at the scene and will bring us a live report. new this morning, berkeley voters will get to decide whether to want homeless from sitting on downtown sidewalks. the council made that decision late last night but not before sitting through hours of angry opposition. terry mcsweeney is live in berk the story. >> reporter: commercial --

commercial areas like telegraph avenue here it is already illegal to lie down between 7 in the morning and 10 at night. voters are going to decide in november if it is illegal to sit on those sidewalks. city council approving that idea last night by 6-3. take a look at the meeting, it got heated at times. the berkeley city council and that kind of heat is probably going to last until november's vote. stand up for the right to sit down, rallying cry outside the meeting. the mayor says right now people lying on the sidewalk could be approached by city ambassadors who want to offer services and a ticket if necessary. as soon as someone sits up, they are no longer breaking the law and the ambassador has no sway. sitting on sidewalks is interfering with businesses and foot traffic, according to supporters. opponents say it could lead to harassment. >> i've lived in berkeley for

41 years and worked with the homeless and i haven't seen any of those laws work the way they are supposed to work. they become more sort of harassment. >> reporter: the ordinance would carry a possible fine of $50 that would only be after the it isest were warned this is an order -- the sitters were warned this is already in place in san francisco. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news.í- this morning 4500 nurses at 11 sutter health hospitals are staging a one-day strike the latest walk-out by hospital workers protesting stalled contract talks. nurses had been working without a contract for one year. the nurses are fighting a proposed hike in co-pay for health benefits and end to coverage for retirees. sutter health says it can't afford to cover those costs. the hospital will use replacement nurses. san jose police asking for tips about the fatal shooting

of a 17-year-old boy in front after elementary school shortly after 6:00 last night in front of rocket ship mosaic elementary. the teenager was shot several times by somebody in a passing car he died at the scene, the city's 19th homicide victim of the year. police have not released the victim's name. this morning pg&e and san francisco fire department are investigating how a natural gasline ignited and fueled a fire in the portola district late yesterday afternoon. the flames spread quickly across two buildings on san bruno avenue after a construction worker hired to renovate a building tried to hook-up a gasline. crews contained the fire to a dental office and three story building. it took pg&e more than two hours to shut off the line which many found troubling. >> our lives is on hand for this, what happened they don't shut it off the entire block could go up, right? i'm a lot concerned.

>> pg&e insists they followed protocol and shouldn't shut off the gas immediately because the fire was on top of the main gas cut off point crews had to use a secondary valve. the construction worker was badly burned and being treated. pg&e spent hours dealing with another problem, downed power lines that workers didn't clear up until 2:30 this morning. it started when a car hit a utility pole on highway 4 near hercules. the car burst into flames after the impact. the driver escaped unharmed. firefighters kept the flames from reaching brush and trees. the accident forced the closure of that stretch of highway 4 for several hours. pg&e crews worked late into the night to restore power. this week the wife of suspended san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi is expected to ask a court for permission to extend her stay in venezuela this is video from last month when dan noyes

>> closed captioning brought to you by mancini sleepworld. the san mateo county gang task force has launched its summer crackdown and gave abc7 news a look at the operation that is keeping a lid on gang violence. members of the task force fanned out across the peninsula in redwood city they are checking on gang members on parole and probation. some had outstanding warrants. they checked that toots of suspected -- checked the tattoos of suspected gang members to see what groups they belonged to. in one stop they found a trove of drugs in the car ready for sale, including crack, meth, ecstasy and heroin. they also discovered a young runway in the car. >> she is 15 and missing out of three different counties. she is obviously loved. >> the sheriff's office gang

task force consists of officers from all of the police departments on the peninsula. 100 to 120 officers and deputies have been trained. this next story is going to be hard to watch but is incredible. out of lubbock, texas from a police dashboard camera in hot pursuit of an suv. a toddler is thrown out, amazingly the child gets up and begins walking looks like he's trying to get back to the truck. thankfully, somebody runs over and picks him up to protect him. some teenaged purse snatching suspects were realized and charged with injury to a child, among other crimes. don't be too hard on your teen if he or she is having trouble getting a summer job. bloomberg business report is coming up. the wife of the man charged in the shooting death of a florida teen is under arrest. the misinformation that may land her in prison.

in the latest poll only 43% of votes expressed favorable opinions about the president's economic agenda, 40% say the same about mitt romney. among independent swing voters, 54% see mr. obama's plans in a negative light. 47% rate romney's economic plan as negative. firefighters in colorado managed to make some progress battling a massive wildfire near fort collins in the past 24 hours they've established 10% containment of the fire that has grown to 43,000 acres. hundreds of families remain evacuated. wondering if there will be anything left when they go back. authorities say more than 100 homes and other structures have been damaged or destroyed it is too early to give out precise numbers. one resident died in the fire. we had some wind concerns, higher fire danger yesterday, last night what is going on now? >> clouds have come in so the winds are still out there sfo,
