f >> announcer: right now breaking news. that breaking news comes from redwood city. an overnight car fire spread to an apartment complex investigators are calling it suspicious. >> it left several people homeless and dozens more can't go back because the power is out. amy hollyfield is live where the investigation is underway. >> reporter: that's the issue firefighters are dealing with because it is suspicious they don't want anybody inside their crime tape. a few residents have asked if they could get clothes to wear to get to work? the firefighters have said no.

that is one issue here. it is a suspicious fair. investigators are in there taking a look. 27 people went running from their homes overnight when the building caught fire this is 12:30 this morning. at an apartment complex in redwood city. firefighters say it looks like it starred in the carport -- it started in a carport. investigators say it looks like someone set this fire on purpose. >> there's some things found with the cars that are making it appear to be a deliberate attack the amount of fire and the patterns are all leading to an extended investigation here. >> reporter: firefighters are focusing on those cars this morning. they think they are going to be here for several hours. they don't know what the motive would have been behind this crime, if it was deliberately set. two units, does -- were does

councilmembers say the ballot measure will give the city leverage in directing the homeless to city funded programs to help them. terry mcsweeney will have a live report coming up. this morning, the parents of missing sierra lamar are expected to announce an increase in the reward for information. the announcement is scheduled for 8:30 this morning at burnet elementary which serves as headquarters for the search effort. volunteers will head out after parents make a plea for information to help find their daughter or prosecute anyone responsible for her disappearance. 21-year-old antolin garcia-torres is charged. this morning a former san jose elementary schoolteacher is scheduled to be back in court on charges he produced and possessed child porn. 50-year-old johnny urias was arrested two weeks ago place on leave last august from will

rogers element after police launched an investigation. officials said investigators told them there is no indication any students were victims. right now, day three of the child sex abuse trial for former penn state coach jerry sandusky getting underway in pennsylvania. katie marzullo join us from the breaking news center. >> reporter: jerry sandusky is back in the courtroom now. we have video of him arriving this was 30 minutes ago. he got out of the car the first time here and made several trips back and forth carrying in boxes with his attorneys. today in court another accuse expected to take the stand and detail the sexual abuse he says he suffered at the hands of sandusky. yesterday coach mcqueary testified the assistant coach who says he walked in on sandusky raping bay in the shower of the penn state locker room in addition to the accuser's testimony seems to be impacting jurors, some cried yesterday.

of the maze >> we continue to follow overnight breaking news from the peninsula. an apartment complex fire in redwood city is being called suspicious this morning. some people are homeless. amy hollyfield joins us live from the scene. >> reporter: we just found out this fire did claim a family pet a dog did not make it was killed in this fire, 27 people went running from the burning building didn't have time to grab a thing. red cross has set up a stherl at the fair oaks expandy are for for people who need help. this -- this fire started 12:30 this morning at an apartment complex in redwood city. firefighters are zeroing in on the carport they say some cars were on fire that to the building. now the fire is out investigators are trying to figure out what happened. they say it appears the fire looks suspicious. >> there are some things found with the cars that are making it appear to be a deliberate

-- disruptions to service. pg&e and san francisco fire department investigating how a natural gasline ignited and started a stubborn fire in the portola district yesterday afternoon the flames spread quickly after a construction worker tried to hook-up a gasline. crews contained the fire to a dental office and three story building. it took pg&e more than two hours to shut off the gasline a troubling fact for many residents. >> our lives is on hand for this what happens they don't shut it off the entire block could go up right? i'm a lot concerned. >> pg&e insists they could not shut off the gas immediately because the fire was right on top of the main cut-off point. the construction worker was badly burned and is being treated for life-threatening injuries. this morning 4500 nurses at 11 bay area sutter health hospitals are staging a one-day strike. the latest walk-out by

hospital workers. nurses have been working without a contract for one year. the nurses are fighting a proposed hike in co-pay for health benefits an end to health care coverage for retirees. sutter health says it can't afford to cover the costs. new this morning berkeley is making a move that is angering the city's growing homeless population. city leaders voted to let voters decide if berkeley should ban sitting or sleeping on sidewalks. terry mcsweeney tells us live this all follows a contentious and you might say bitter late night meeting. >> reporter: it appears the political forecast for berkeley is hot between now and november that is when voters will decide whether it should be illegal to sit down on sidewalks in commercial areas like telegraph avenue between the hours of 7:00 in the morning and 10:00 at night. it is already illegal to lie down right now it is still okay to sit down. take a look at that meeting it did get hot.

this went until early this morning. finally the council voted 6-3 in favor of putting it up to the voters in november. outside edginess stand up for the right to sit down the rallying cry. the mayor says people lying on the sidewalk are approached by city ambassadors who want to help them out with services. as soon as someone sits up they no longer have to listen. supporters say sitting on the sidewalks is interfering with businesses pedestrians and the best way to help the homeless is to make it illegal to sit. >> they invite the person into the city attorney's office and they say let's make a deal. >> we agree with you we waive those citations if you go into services. >> reporter: those citations start at $50. opponents say this is illegal, unneeded and it is going to hurt the homeless or lead to harassment of a very -- a population that is in trouble already. santa cruz has this

san francisco has this. it has passed muster in court. we'll find out how berkeley residents feel about it come november. terry mcsweeney abc7 news. this week the wife of suspended san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi is expected to ask thedç court for permission to extend her stay in venezuela. this is video from last month when dan noyes interviewed eliana lopez exclusively in venezuela. the chronicle reports lopez will seek another two month extension before her current extension expires saturday. the city's ethics commission is scheduled to begin its hearing next tuesday over mayor lee's attempt to remove mirkarimi from office. the san francisco board of supervisors is fast tracking negotiations with the warriors to build a new waterfront arena. the warriors announced last month they want to build thegóé new arena by 2017 south of the bay bridge. the board passed a resolution yesterday waiving competitive
