station with the latest. >> reporter: i want to get straight to a bart spokesman for the latest on the situation with the tracks and when bart trains can start going to is . what is the latest jim on the tracks and is it going to be days weeks months until trains start running? >> we don't know. there's no bart service across the bay until further notice that's what i can say definitively until we do a damage assessment. we are still in the process of doing that. if people need t the bay this morning find a different way. ac transit ferries or get a ride across the bay bridge with friends. >> reporter: this is a major disrum shun 370,000 -- disruption 370,000. >> every weekday 50,000 use bart if get across the bay in the morning that's about the same amount that use the bay bridge. this is a major hit to the transportation infrastructure in san francisco. and east bay. >> reporter: what kind of bus bridge are you able to set up
5:02 am
or anything that you can do to help commuters? >> right now we have not been able to establish a bus bridge. as i said ac transit has transbay bus service they normally do excellent service ferries. right now we are trying to get buses to get a bus bridge. but my advice for people honestly is to find a different way. if they usually use bart to fan a different way if get across the bay. >> reporter: you said people going from richmond to fremont or sfo should be fine. >> richmond fremont line is not affected still running trains in the east bay all east bay stations are connected. all the san francisco peninsula stations are connected to each other. we simply can't get across the bay. which of course is our bread and butter in the morning commute. >> you said damage assessment is still underway? >> damage assessment is being complicated by several factors. we haven't had a chance to really figure out what the
5:03 am
damage is. smoke is still swirling around there, so it is not particularly safe condition. there are live wires also because of poles that were damaged that are sagging near the track. until be safe to get up there and look at it it is -- i don't want to speculate on how long this service outage will last. >> you say it could be days? >> i don't want if get into the business of saying -- i don't want to get into the business of saying how long. stay tuned and find a different way right now. >> reporter: thank you jim. let me show you what caused this. see the building behind me? that used to be a four-story building now it is down to the cinder blocks. this was a senior center that was under construction. a huge fire lit up the night started 2:15 this morning.
5:04 am
this building was under construction it was empty, no one was hurt no evacuations having to take place. all of the firefighters are okay. the fire is out right now they are just monitoring the situation looking for hot spots, they are starting to draw down here at the scene. firefighters describe it as at the time as an incredibly huge hot fire that destroyed construction equipment, burned street signs and cars here in the area here at fifth near the west oakland bart station and of course it burned the bart tracks. bart officials are still up there on the elevated track trying to assess damage and figure out what they are dealing with. how long it is going to take to repair. and how long until they can get the trains running. terry mcsweeney is also here on the scene to help us cover this breaking news story. he's looking at commuters and now is going to impact people. terry what you got? >> reporter: they are showing up here a lot people unaware
5:05 am
that anything was wrong until they get close to the station they see police with their lights flashing keeping cars out of this parking lot because there's no bart service to be had. you can see the bart inspectors track inspectors looking down on the razed tracks. we heard from abdulmutallab they don't have handle on when bart going to be rolling again. look at pictures of a west oakland bart station that should be open for business and beginning to get a buzz going on a usual weekday morning. not this morning. talked to one person and he had no idea until he talked to him what had been going on. >> i don't know what happened. it is closed. i gotta go to my job work. >> reporter: how are you going to get there now? >> driving. >> reporter: as we've been hearing from jim that's what so many people are going to have to do. if you want if get to
5:06 am
san francisco bart this morning is not an option. you can still see smoke coming up over the area them(ç flames from the fire that did possible damage, trying to get a handle on that now. crews coming out here pg&e bart crews all over the place. the entire west oakland bart station blocked off by oakland pd to keep commuters out of the parking lot because there's no reason to be here no bart trains running. that's the story from here. going to be a heck of a commute. let's check in with frances dinglasan. thank you for that. no service through the transbay tube for bart to and from oakland and san francisco. we are going to keep you posted on that could be days we'll let you know. bart is asking passengers to seek alternate means of transportation which means the transbay service on ac transit
5:07 am
could be a good alternate or ferries right now not reporting major problems. i wanted to reiterate what jim was saying to amy hollyfield at the scene west oakland where the fire is no service here between oakland and san francisco through the transbay tube. but he did say trains are running in the east bay. so the richmond to fremont line still running. you can still get if dublin pleasanton out to pittsburg bay point. if you are on the peninsula you can travel between millbrae and san francisco and back. but for folks who are planning to head to the giants game today for the afternoon game you have to try to find another way if get there. it could mean big delays at the bay bridge toll. you may want to consider richmond san rafael bridge or the san mateo bridge. we'll keep track of all the alternates. if you are heading to the u.s. open folks were supposed to head to the colma bart station take shuttles from there.
5:08 am
if you are driving, you have to drive to candlestick and park there and then you can take a shuttle which takes another 25 to 30 minutes to the u.s. open. keep that in mind. bart no transbay service until further notice. we are still trying to find out if and when they can set up a bus bridge in the meantime take your car get a ride use ac transit or ferries. alternates 880 san mateo bridge dumbarton bridge flowing well no problems on 101. just a a love shot on the bay bridge toll we could have a longer back-up today. right now it is okay. i'll keep you posted on anything i get new from bart. frances you mentioned ac transit let's find out what they are doing. we have clarence johnson of ac transit on the phone with us.
5:09 am
good morning. what are you doing? how are you gearing up to handle the fact that bart isn't running an across the bay? >> right now we are trying to assess what is needed in the meantime we -- o' we are running service from macarthur bart and 20th street bart for bart riders. they can take those buses and won't have to worry about paying us at this point. that's all we can do at this point. we obviously are diverting any service that normally would go to the west oakland bart station, diverted around that area in the meantime we are going to be trying to figure out what more is necessary. we have some extra capacity on our morning buses. hopefully, we'll be able to handle much of the load. we'll be -- >> we are talking extra 100,000 people or so if you are handling all the transbay
5:10 am
bart passengers. do you have that capacity? do you have extra buses or drivers? can you start them earlier to handle this? your normal transbay service on ac transit doesn't begin until later. >> it will be a challenge that's what we are trying to work out to see what we can do. again, what is actually needed. it will be a challenge for us. >> clarence, how many buses would you have running across the bay on a morning like this? how many do you think you can get into service? >> well we have 26 lines that run across the bay bridge. we will still be running those lines. it is just a matter of us trying to make sure that we get as many bart passengers as possible to locations where we can get them on to our buses to get them across the bridge. >> clarence is that bus bridge that is being set up currently or they are efforting on bart is that in
5:11 am
partnership with you guys? >> well typically it would be and we are assuming it will be this time. again, this is stuff we are trying to work out as we speak. we'll know more shortly. >> clarence johnson with ac transit, that you very much for the information. they are trying to put on additional capacity to handle the tents of thousands of people who will need -- the tents of thousands of people who will need a ride into work who can't take bart across the bay we are covering alternate routes stay with us for more on this fire that has shutdown transbay bart service and what is being done. let's talk about a topic, happier. giants fans still buzzing after witnessing history last night at home. matt cain pitched the first perfect game in the franchise's 130 year history. here was the final out. >> announcer: on the ground

richmond to fremont fine dublin pleasanton to oakland and back towards pittsburg bay point running. also on the peninsula trains running between millbrae and san francisco and back. they just can't get through the trans bay tube due to the fire in west oakland. a lot of folks were planning on taking bart to the giants game you have to think of alternate means as folks heading to the united states open this going to be a disaster if this continues for the next few days. alternates are ac transit and then you just heard clarence talking how they are going to possibly provide additional bus service. also ferries. if you have to drive right now traffic is fine we'll be keeping you posted on the back-ups. san mateo dumbarton, bay bridge richmond san rafael bridge all alternates right now light at the bay bridge toll. busy morning. we'll have a busy weekend as far as the weather goes. enjoy the calmness of this
